How to Flash a Screen: Firmware Repair or Display Flicker?

“Flash a screen” may mean rewriting firmware or seeing the display flicker. Learn how to distinguish the two and follow Google’s scoped Pixel software and support options.

“Flash a screen” can mean two different things: rewriting a device’s firmware or seeing the display flicker. Firmware flashing is a software operation, not a way to repair a screen panel. If your screen is flickering, start with troubleshooting for that symptom; do not flash firmware unless the device maker’s instructions call for it. The official procedures covered here apply to Google Pixel and Nexus devices, not every phone, tablet, monitor, or laptop.

First, identify what you mean by “flash”

  • Firmware flashing: installing or rewriting device software, typically to update or restore a device. It is a device-specific process with potential data-loss and security consequences.
  • A flashing display: visible flickering or changing screen appearance. That is a symptom to troubleshoot, not proof that the firmware needs to be rewritten.

The steps below cover Google’s Pixel software options and Pixel display-support route. For other manufacturers or device types, use that maker’s instructions rather than adapting these procedures.

If you mean installing or restoring Pixel software

For a Pixel update or repair: use Google’s repair tool

Google’s Update and Software Repair tool supports Pixel 4a and later, including Pixel Fold. It requires a computer and a USB cable that connects the phone to that computer. Open Google’s Pixel factory-reset and repair instructions, choose the applicable software-repair option, and follow the current on-screen directions. This is a Pixel-specific flow; do not assume it applies to a different device.

For a factory restoration: check whether a full OTA is more suitable

Google provides factory images for restoring original software on Nexus and Pixel devices. Google says a full OTA image is usually easier and safer to sideload than a factory image; in most cases, a full OTA sideload does not require wiping data or unlocking the bootloader. Consult Google’s Factory Images for Nexus and Pixel Devices page to identify the exact device and build instructions before choosing a route.

Route When it may fit Data and bootloader considerations
Full OTA sideload When applying an update without doing a factory-image restoration Google says it usually does not require a data wipe or an unlocked bootloader, and is generally easier and safer than using a factory image.
Factory image When restoring the original firmware for the exact supported Nexus or Pixel model and build Installing a factory image erases all device data. Unlocking the bootloader makes the device less secure. Follow the matching instructions and Google’s guidance to relock the bootloader after using a factory image.

Before proceeding with a factory image, back up anything you need and verify the model and build against Google’s live instructions. The page includes anti-rollback cautions for selected models and releases; these vary by device and software version, so do not substitute a generic command sequence or instructions saved from an older release. If you cannot confirm that the instructions match your device, stop rather than guessing.

If you mean that the display is flickering

Do not treat flicker alone as a reason to flash firmware: Google maintains a separate route for Pixel screen-appearance issues and guidance for a Pixel phone that freezes. Start with the support instructions for your exact device and symptom, including relevant update guidance. The available guidance does not establish a universal way to tell whether flicker is caused by software or hardware, so avoid assuming a firmware rewrite will fix it.
