How to Fix Zelda Save Data or Cloud Backup Problems on Nintendo Switch

Find missing Zelda progress by checking the correct user, membership, game support, and cloud-versus-console timestamps before restoring a save.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Zelda progress is missing, first select the user who originally played the game, then compare the console save with its cloud backup before restoring anything. A cloud download replaces the existing console save, and Nintendo says the overwritten data cannot be recovered. Cloud saves also require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and support for the exact Zelda game and edition.

Check the right user, membership, and connection

  1. Select the Switch user profile that originally played the Zelda game. Save data belongs to an individual user and cannot be transferred between users. Check that the Nintendo Account linked to that user is the one you expect.
  2. Confirm the console is connected to the internet and that the account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo requires membership for Save Data Cloud. If the membership expired, backups are inaccessible until you resubscribe; Nintendo says previous backups can be accessed again if you resubscribe within 180 days of expiry. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online FAQ.

Confirm that your Zelda game and edition support cloud saves

Do not assume every Zelda release or edition supports Save Data Cloud. On the HOME Menu, highlight the game, press + or −, and select Save Data Cloud. Nintendo identifies unsupported software in that menu. You can also check the game’s Software Details in Nintendo eShop or its Nintendo product information. Check the exact game and edition you played.

Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ confirms Save Data Cloud support for the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Editions, and says saves from the original Switch versions can be carried over to those editions. Confirm compatibility for your specific title and edition in the console menu or eShop. Nintendo notes that Switch 2-only features or content may not be available when a Switch 2 Edition save is used on a Switch console. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 transfer guidance.

Compare cloud and console timestamps before restoring

On the console, open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, choose the intended user, then select the Zelda game. The screen shows the latest cloud-backup and console-save timestamps. Choose which version to keep based on those times:

  • Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems

  • Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
What the timestamps show What to do
The console save is newer Choose Back Up Save Data to upload the console copy to the cloud.
The cloud backup is newer Choose Download Save Data to put the cloud copy on the console. This replaces the current console save; its overwritten data cannot be recovered.

Nintendo’s instructions for comparing and managing these copies are at How to Back Up and Restore Save Data. If you are unsure which save contains the progress you want, do not confirm an overwrite until you have checked the timestamps and chosen deliberately.

Restore a cloud save safely

Only download after confirming that the cloud copy is the one you want. Nintendo warns that downloading replaces the game’s existing console save and that the overwritten data cannot be recovered.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
  1. From the HOME Menu, highlight the Zelda game and press + or −.
  2. Select Save Data Cloud, choose the user, and select Download Save Data.
  3. Alternatively, open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, select the user and backup, then choose Download Save Data.
  4. Review the confirmation and proceed only if you intend to replace the console copy with the cloud copy.

Why a backup or automatic download may not have happened

Automatic backup and automatic download are separate settings. For compatible games, automatic backup is enabled by default when a Nintendo Switch Online membership starts. Automatic download must be enabled separately on each console where you want it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check automatic download, open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, select the user, then Settings, and enable Automatic Save-Data Download. Nintendo says a newer cloud save can download while the console is in Sleep Mode; leave the console asleep until the download finishes. Details are in Nintendo’s save-data backup and restore instructions.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Troubleshoot a backup that still fails

  • The game is open: Close the Zelda software. Nintendo says save data cannot be backed up while the software is open or in use.
  • The console is offline or out of date: Check the internet connection and install any available system update.
  • The service or title is ineligible: Verify the Nintendo Switch Online membership is active and that the exact game edition supports Save Data Cloud.
  • Another backup is running: Check whether a different game’s backup is in progress, and review automatic-backup settings for the selected user.
  • Nintendo’s service is disrupted: Check Nintendo Network Status for maintenance or outages.

If a message says the cloud backup is older than the console save, Nintendo explains this can happen when play began on the console before the latest cloud copy was downloaded. Compare the timestamps and choose the copy to keep. Back up the console version or download the cloud version as appropriate; either action can overwrite the other copy, and an overwritten save cannot be recovered. Nintendo’s explanation is included in its save-data backup and restore guidance.

Use a second console or move a save locally

For compatible Nintendo Switch software, Nintendo says cloud backups can be shared between a Switch and a Switch 2 using the same Nintendo Account. The Switch 2 FAQ specifically confirms cloud support for the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Editions and carryover from the original Switch versions. Check the exact game and edition before relying on cloud support.

If you want to move an individual save directly between two systems instead of using cloud backup, use System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data and the same Nintendo Account on both consoles. Nintendo’s transfer guidance says the save is deleted from the original console after transfer, so this is a move—not a duplicate backup. See Nintendo’s transfer guide.

Can you make a local backup instead?

No. Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ states: “Local save data backups are not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.” For supported games, Save Data Cloud requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership; a membership cannot recreate a cloud backup that was never uploaded. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ.
