Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds in the encoder that actually sends your video to YouTube. YouTube recommends a two-second cadence and says not to exceed four seconds. If OBS feeds another encoder or relay before YouTube, change the setting on that final device instead.
What the missing-keyframes warning means
YouTube’s Live Control Room checks the incoming stream and displays messages beside its stream health indicator. Its error guidance describes the problem as keyframes arriving too often or not often enough. When they arrive too infrequently, YouTube says viewers may experience buffering; its recommended cadence is every two seconds, with a four-second maximum. YouTube Help: Live streaming error messages.
A keyframe interval is measured in time or frames, depending on the encoder’s control. At 30 frames per second, two seconds equals 60 frames. At a different frame rate, the equivalent number of frames changes; use the interval in seconds when the encoder offers that unit.
YouTube also cautions that ingestion errors can produce incorrect GOP sizes, so the warning does not always prove that the configured encoder interval itself is wrong. If the setting is already correct, check the stream path and the device that sends the final feed to YouTube.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Change the keyframe interval in OBS
- In OBS, open the output settings for the encoder currently used to stream. The exact control location varies by OBS version, output mode, and encoder.
- Find Keyframe Interval or the equivalent control in that active streaming encoder’s settings.
- Set the interval to 2 seconds. If the control uses frames, enter the equivalent for your frame rate—for example, 60 frames at 30 fps.
- If OBS sends the video to a separate encoder or relay that then sends it to YouTube, set the interval on that downstream device. The relevant setting is on the last encoder sending the feed to YouTube.
- Start a test stream and check the stream health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Test before an event, then monitor stream health while live.
The OBS Project’s advanced recording settings guide, dated November 30, 2023, lists a keyframe interval of 2 in several encoder examples. That guide covers recording settings; it does not establish one streaming-menu path that applies to every current OBS version and encoder. Use the active streaming encoder’s own control and confirm the result in YouTube.
Check the rest of the stream settings only if the warning persists
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe frequency with a four-second maximum, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate; YouTube’s recommendations vary across those combinations, so there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for the matching configuration, test the stream, and monitor its health.

- Confirm which encoder is sending to YouTube: OBS may not be the final encoder if a relay or another device is downstream.
- Recheck the actual interval and units: a control set in frames must match the intended duration at the stream’s frame rate.
- Consider ingestion errors: YouTube notes that they can cause incorrect GOP sizes even when the configured interval appears appropriate.
Changing to HLS is not necessary to fix the ordinary keyframe warning. YouTube documents separate HLS setup requirements, including segment and protocol details, and identifies OBS as an HLS-capable encoder. If you are already using HLS, follow its distinct requirements rather than applying RTMP assumptions: YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The warning says keyframes arrive too infrequently | The final encoder’s interval may be longer than YouTube’s limit. | Set it to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| The warning remains although OBS is set to 2 seconds | A downstream encoder or relay may be sending the feed, or YouTube may be reporting an ingestion-related GOP issue. | Check the last device in the stream path and inspect for ingestion problems; test again and review Live Control Room messages. |
| The keyframe control is in frames, not seconds | The required frame count depends on frame rate. | Convert the desired interval using the active frame rate; at 30 fps, 2 seconds is 60 frames. |
| You use HLS rather than RTMP/RTMPS | HLS has separate segment and protocol requirements. | Follow YouTube’s HLS documentation; switching protocols is not a required fix for this warning. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded video or playlist that needs to stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
