What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Match the fix to what looks wrong: pinch out on a playing video to zoom and crop it, change YouTube’s app layout under Settings > Display > Full screen apps if that option is available, or use Flex mode when the phone is partly folded. These are different problems with different fixes; zooming a video will not repair a narrow app window, and app settings cannot remove black bars encoded into the video.
Before changing settings, note whether the problem affects one video, the whole YouTube interface, the partly folded posture, or the transition between displays. That distinction can save you from changing an app setting when the issue is simply the video’s shape—or expecting a video gesture to fix how YouTube uses the Fold’s screen.

First, identify which YouTube layout problem you have
A Galaxy Z Fold can show YouTube on its cover display, its larger inner display, or in a partially folded Flex mode posture. A layout that seems wrong in one of those situations may be normal for another. Start by noting when the problem happens:
- Only one video has unused space around it: the issue is probably the video’s framing or aspect ratio.
- YouTube’s menus and video area look narrow or letterboxed on the unfolded inner display: check the app’s full-screen presentation settings.
- The layout changes when the phone is partly folded: check Flex mode and the app’s behavior in that posture.
- YouTube refreshes or reloads as you fold or unfold the phone: investigate display-transition continuity rather than video zoom.
It also helps to distinguish the video from the app window. YouTube’s pinch gesture changes how the picture is framed inside the player. Samsung’s display settings change how an app uses the screen. Neither guarantees that every video or app will fill every part of the Fold’s inner display.

Try to observe the issue in more than one situation before adjusting anything. For example, if the YouTube menus use the inner display normally but one video has bars, the app window is unlikely to be the issue. If menus and controls are constrained around multiple videos, the app’s presentation may be worth checking. If the problem begins only when you half-fold the phone, focus on Flex mode. If the app reloads precisely as the display changes, use the continuity steps below.
These distinctions matter because “full screen” can refer to more than one thing. A video can be enlarged inside YouTube while the YouTube app window remains unchanged. Conversely, the app can be set to use the display while the video still has bars because of its original shape or because those bars were included in the upload.
If the video does not fill the screen, zoom in on the picture
While a video is playing, place two fingers on the video and spread them apart to zoom in. To restore the original framing, pinch the fingers together. Samsung documents this gesture as a way to enlarge the video image, but the result depends on the source video’s aspect ratio and encoding. Samsung’s YouTube fullscreen troubleshooting guide explains both the gesture and its limitations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Start playback and make sure you are interacting with the video itself.
- Spread two fingers apart on the image to zoom in.
- Check the edges of the enlarged picture. Zooming fills more screen by cropping the image, so subtitles, faces, or text near an edge may disappear.
- Pinch inward to return to the video’s original framing if the crop is distracting or hides important content.
This is the right first step when the app’s controls and menus look fine but the playing picture leaves unused area. It changes the video framing only; it does not change YouTube’s overall window or the way the Fold handles switching displays. Try the gesture on the video area rather than on the surrounding app interface.
Some black bars are part of the uploaded video itself, rather than empty space YouTube can remove. Samsung says pinch zoom cannot remove bars embedded by the creator. A video whose aspect ratio already matches the screen also cannot use this zoom function. Do not expect every video to fill the Fold without cropping or distortion.
The tradeoff is straightforward: more of the screen can be covered, but some of the picture may be cut off. Look particularly at subtitles, faces near the edge, and on-screen text before deciding to keep the zoomed view. If the source includes important content at the edges, the original framing may be more useful than filling more of the display.
Samsung’s support page cautions that a YouTube video may not completely fill every corner of a Galaxy screen even when the Full Screen or Landscape button is selected. So an area that remains unused is not automatically evidence of a broken display or a setting that has not taken effect. The video itself can determine what can be enlarged, and embedded bars cannot be removed by the gesture.

If YouTube’s app window looks constrained, check Full screen apps
If the YouTube interface itself appears too narrow or letterboxed on the unfolded display, look for Samsung’s app presentation setting. On supported software, open Settings > Display > Full screen apps, select YouTube, and choose Full screen if that choice is offered. Samsung’s current Fold guidance describes this path; the available labels and options can vary by model and software version. See Samsung’s Full screen apps guidance.
- Open Settings on the Fold.
- Tap Display, then Full screen apps.
- Select YouTube.
- If Full screen is available, select it and reopen YouTube to check the result.
After changing the option, assess the app window as well as the video. Ask whether the menus, playback controls, and surrounding interface now use the space differently. If those parts were already laid out properly and only the video had bars, the app setting was not the relevant fix; use the pinch gesture instead.
If YouTube is not listed, or the Full screen choice is absent, your device may not offer that control for the app. Do not assume a different menu path from an older Fold tutorial will apply to your model. Samsung also notes that some apps do not fully support App continuity, so their presentation can differ between the cover and main displays.
App continuity describes the experience as you move between the Fold’s displays. A difference in YouTube’s presentation between the cover and inner screens can therefore reflect app support or the device’s software, rather than a problem with video framing. Full screen apps affects how the app is presented; it cannot guarantee that YouTube will behave identically on each display or that every video image will fill the screen.
If you test this setting, make one change and then reopen YouTube to check the result. Confirm whether the interface changed and whether the original complaint remains. That gives you a clearer answer than changing several display options at once.
Try Labs only when the regular app setting is not enough
Samsung Labs may include options relevant to an app that appears poorly scaled or oriented, such as Landscape view for portrait apps or App screen zoom. These are optional experiments, not guaranteed YouTube fixes. Samsung says Labs features are experimental and can vary by device. Its Labs guidance explains the available features and device-dependent options.
- Change only one Labs option at a time so you can tell which change affected the layout.
- Reopen YouTube and check both the app interface and video playback after each change.
- If the layout gets worse, return to Labs and restore the original setting.
Labs is most relevant when the regular Full screen apps option is unavailable or has not resolved an app-window orientation or scaling issue. It is not the first remedy for bars in one video, since the video zoom gesture addresses that framing problem directly. Nor should a Labs setting be treated as a required step: the options are experimental, and what appears on one Fold may not appear on another.

Keep the test limited. Choose one potentially relevant option, reopen YouTube, and compare the app with how it looked before. Restoring the original value gives you a clear point of comparison and reduces the chance of confusing one setting’s effect with another’s.

Samsung’s announcement for that path specifically names the original Galaxy Fold, Z Fold2, and Z Fold3 in the One UI 3.1.1 era. It is historical guidance, not a universal current menu for every Z Fold. Samsung’s One UI announcement describes the older feature.
If you do not see that older Customized App Aspect Ratios menu, that alone does not indicate a fault. The menu was documented for particular generations and software, while current Samsung guidance points to Full screen apps and device-dependent Labs options. Use the choices present on your own phone rather than following an old path that does not match its software.
If the phone is partly folded, use Flex mode for that posture
Flex mode is intended for using the device while it is partially folded; it is not a way to remove letterboxing from a video or fix every app layout problem. Samsung lists YouTube among apps usable in this posture. If you want the video on the upper half while the phone is propped up, Flex mode is the relevant feature. The available controls and supported apps depend on the model.
To check the related panel setting, open Settings > Advanced features > Flex mode panel. Samsung’s Flex mode guidance covers the feature and its configurable panel. The precise behavior can differ between Fold models and apps: developers need to design their apps for the half-open posture, so an unusual arrangement does not by itself indicate a damaged display. Samsung explains this design consideration in its Flex mode developer overview.

Its purpose in this troubleshooting flow is to address how the phone and app behave when the device is partly folded, such as when it is propped up. If YouTube is not arranged the way you want in that position, check the Flex mode panel setting and the options available for your model. Do not use this path to address an individual video’s embedded bars; those remain part of the video.
It is also useful to compare YouTube while fully unfolded with its behavior while partially folded. If the layout looks appropriate when open but changes in the half-open posture, you have isolated a posture-specific behavior. Samsung’s developer explanation notes that developers need to design their apps for this half-open position, which helps explain why behavior can vary between apps. An awkward arrangement in this posture does not, by itself, mean the display is damaged.

If YouTube refreshes when you fold or unfold the phone
An app that reloads during a display transition presents a different symptom from a video that does not fill the screen. Samsung has a specific continuity troubleshooting procedure for an issue after Android 16 upgrades. Apply it only if YouTube refreshes while switching between the cover and main displays:
- Open Settings > Display > Screen layout and zoom.
- Change Screen zoom once.
- Return Screen zoom to your preferred position.
- Test folding and unfolding again, and check whether YouTube still refreshes.
- Check for available software updates if the behavior continues.
This procedure is tied to the continuity symptom and Samsung’s Android 16 troubleshooting guidance; it is not a remedy for ordinary video letterboxing. Follow Samsung’s continuity troubleshooting article for the steps.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In particular, do not change Screen zoom just because the video has bars. The recommended change-and-restore procedure is for the app refreshing during a fold/unfold transition, and Samsung connects it to a continuity issue after Android 16 upgrades. If the app remains open and only the picture framing is unsatisfactory, go back to the video zoom step or check the app-window setting as appropriate.
After testing, fold and unfold the phone again to see whether the same refresh occurs. If it continues, Samsung’s guidance also recommends checking for software updates. Because the procedure is specific to the transition symptom and update context, it should not be treated as a general cure for any YouTube layout complaint.

| What you see | Try this | What it changes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| One video leaves unused screen area | Spread two fingers on the playing video | Zooms the video image | Crops the picture; cannot remove creator-embedded bars |
| YouTube’s app interface looks too narrow or letterboxed | Settings > Display > Full screen apps > YouTube > Full screen, if offered | Changes the app’s screen presentation | Setting availability and app support vary by model and software |
| Layout is awkward while the phone is partly folded | Check Flex mode and its panel setting | Adapts the experience to the partly folded posture | Supported apps and options vary; does not fix embedded bars |
| YouTube refreshes while folding or unfolding | Try Samsung’s Screen zoom change-and-restore procedure for the Android 16 continuity symptom | Addresses the display-transition issue | Not a fix for video framing; the guidance is symptom- and update-specific |
These options are not competing ways to achieve one identical result. They act on different parts of the experience:
- Video zoom changes the picture within the player. It can cover more area, at the cost of cropping, and is limited by the video’s aspect ratio and encoding.
- Full screen apps changes the app’s presentation on supported software. It may be absent for YouTube on a particular model or build, and it cannot remove bars baked into a video.
- Labs offers possible orientation or scaling experiments, but these are experimental and device-dependent. Change one option at a time and undo it if it makes the layout worse.
- Flex mode is for the partly folded posture. Its available behavior depends on the model and on whether an app is designed for that posture.
- Screen zoom change and restore is for the specific refresh-on-transition symptom addressed by Samsung’s Android 16 continuity troubleshooting, not routine letterboxing.
There is no reason to buy an accessory to correct these software layout symptoms. A stand could prop up a phone, but it would not change the video’s framing, the app’s scaling, or how YouTube behaves across displays. A physical accessory is not a substitute for the symptom-matched settings above.

Why menu instructions can differ between Galaxy Z Fold models
Galaxy Z Fold generations and software builds do not necessarily expose the same controls. Current Samsung guidance points to Full screen apps and describes Labs options as experimental and device-dependent. Older instructions about custom app aspect ratios refer to named earlier models and One UI 3.1.1-era software. If a path or option in a guide is missing from your phone, check your model’s available settings rather than assuming the device is faulty.
Best Value
The steps above reflect Samsung US support guidance. The exact model, region, carrier software, One UI version, Android version, and YouTube version can affect which options are present and how the app behaves. The practical test is to identify whether the issue belongs to an individual video, the app’s window, the partly folded posture, or the fold/unfold transition, then use the matching control.
In practical terms, check the current menu on your device before relying on a tutorial for another generation. Samsung’s older Customized App Aspect Ratios path explicitly covers the original Galaxy Fold, Z Fold2, and Z Fold3 in the One UI 3.1.1 era; it should not be assumed to exist on every later Fold. The current Full screen apps path is also conditional: choose Full screen only if that option appears for YouTube.
Menu differences do not necessarily mean you have missed a step. Samsung notes that app continuity support is not complete for every app, and its Labs options vary by device. Use the exact symptom and available controls to guide your next step rather than expecting every Fold to offer the same choices.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a YouTube video fill the Galaxy Z Fold screen?
While the video is playing, spread two fingers apart on the picture to zoom in. This crops the edges, so check subtitles and on-screen details. Pinch inward to restore the original framing.
Why are there still black bars after I zoom in?
Some bars are embedded in the uploaded video and cannot be removed with YouTube’s pinch gesture. Also, videos whose aspect ratio already matches the screen cannot use the zoom function.
How do I make the YouTube app use the Fold’s full screen?
On supported software, open Settings > Display > Full screen apps, select YouTube, and choose Full screen if the option is available. Menu labels and availability vary by model and software.
Will Full screen apps remove black bars from a YouTube video?
No. Full screen apps changes the app’s presentation, while pinch zoom changes video framing. Neither can remove black bars embedded in the uploaded video.
Why does YouTube look different when my Galaxy Z Fold is half open?
Flex mode changes the experience for the partly folded posture, and apps can behave differently depending on their support for that position. Check Settings > Advanced features > Flex mode panel for the available controls on your device.
What should I do if YouTube reloads when I fold or unfold my phone?
For the continuity issue covered in Samsung’s Android 16 troubleshooting, change Screen zoom once under Settings > Display > Screen layout and zoom, return it to your preferred position, and test the transition again. Check for software updates if the behavior continues. This is not a fix for video letterboxing.
The Bottom Line
First decide whether the problem is the video, YouTube’s app window, the partly folded posture, or a fold/unfold refresh. Use pinch zoom for a video that leaves unused space, Full screen apps if YouTube’s window is constrained and the setting is offered, Flex mode for the half-open posture, and Samsung’s continuity steps only for a refresh during display transitions. Each control has limits, and the available menus depend on your Fold model and software.
