If it says incorrect video size (resolution), make the encoder’s actual output width and height match the resolution selected under Ingestion Settings. If your 24/7 stream changes resolution automatically, check whether YouTube is detecting the change or whether a manually configured stream key is pinning a different size. YouTube does not document a guaranteed seamless way to change resolution during an active 24/7 broadcast, so test the encoder’s behavior before changing a live output.
1. Identify the warning before changing settings
In Live Control Room, read the full message beside the Health Indicator and note its timestamp. YouTube health messages identify the reported problem; a continuing issue can cause the error to reappear. Red errors are critical, while yellow warnings indicate a moderate problem that may reduce stream quality. Fix the condition described by the message rather than changing unrelated encoder settings. YouTube’s stream health troubleshooting guide explains how to interpret these messages.

2. Fix an incorrect video-size warning
Compare the configured ingestion resolution with what the encoder is actually sending. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says: “Your video must be the height and width of the resolution that you chose on the Ingestion Settings page.” A label such as 1080p is not enough to verify the match: check the outgoing width and height in the encoder, and check whether a source or profile change altered them.

In Live Control Room, inspect the selected resolution under Ingestion Settings.
- Inspect the encoder’s output. Find the outgoing video resolution or frame size—not just the source file’s resolution—and compare its width and height with the selected ingestion resolution.
- Make them agree. Set the encoder to send the configured dimensions, or choose a supported ingestion resolution that matches the output.
- Check the health indicator and preview. Confirm that the warning clears and the image appears as expected before relying on the configuration for a continuous stream.
If YouTube reports the resolution as unsupported or non-optimal, first confirm that the encoder output matches the selected dimensions. Do not assume every warning means the same thing; use the exact message to guide the next check. YouTube’s live encoder troubleshooting page covers the incorrect-video-size diagnostic.

3. Decide between automatic detection and a manual resolution
YouTube’s default recommendation is automatic resolution and frame-rate detection. In this mode, YouTube detects the encoder settings and transcodes the incoming stream into multiple output formats for viewers. If you need to pin a resolution manually, YouTube provides that option through a custom stream key, with manual settings enabled under Stream Resolution. The encoder must then continue sending dimensions consistent with that configuration, including when its source changes. YouTube documents the automatic and manual options here.

YouTube describes the stream key as the credential or address the encoder uses to send the feed for YouTube to accept. A resolution change by itself is not evidence that the key needs resetting; reserve a key reset for an actual key problem. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.

4. Check bandwidth, bitrate, and encoder output
A resolution mismatch is about dimensions, but a health warning or degraded picture can also involve the connection or encoding configuration. YouTube advises considering a lower selected resolution when available bandwidth cannot sustain the chosen one. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than relying on an old bitrate table: recommended bitrates vary across those settings. - YouTube’s network guidance recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; account for both primary and backup feeds if your setup sends both.
- The current settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 options; availability can depend on the stream configuration.
- YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Treat these as general encoder settings, not proof that every codec or setting is available in every configuration.
If the connection cannot sustain the selected resolution and its bitrate, reduce the selected resolution and configure the encoder to send matching dimensions. A lower resolution that is consistently delivered is preferable to a higher setting the connection cannot sustain. YouTube’s recommended settings page is the reference for current values.

5. Match primary and backup streams
If you use encoder failover, compare the primary and backup feeds before relying on automatic takeover. YouTube lists matching resolution, codec, interlacing, profile, bitrate, frame rate, and audio settings among the required comparisons. A backup that sends a different resolution can undermine a failover even if the primary is healthy. Test the switchover rather than assuming it will work. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes the settings to compare.
6. Handle a resolution change during an active 24/7 broadcast cautiously
YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not promise that changing resolution mid-stream will preserve continuity. The cautious operational approach—an inference from YouTube’s requirement that sent dimensions match the selected resolution—is to keep outgoing dimensions consistent through a live session, test any planned change beforehand, and schedule a suitable transition if your encoder cannot change output safely in place. The exact behavior depends on the encoder and configuration.

- Reproduce the intended source or resolution change in a test stream using the same encoder profile and stream settings.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and health messages while the change occurs.
- If the encoder changes dimensions in a way that conflicts with Ingestion Settings, correct the output/configuration match before taking the setup back to the live broadcast.
- If a safe in-place change is not established for your setup, plan a transition rather than assuming the current broadcast can absorb it without interruption.
YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative audio and video movement, monitoring health messages and the preview, and checking that the stream is accessible. Encoder workflows should also test backup failover where configured. Use YouTube’s testing guidance alongside your encoder’s instructions.
