If your YouTube stream is buffering because OBS reports encoding overloaded, reduce the work assigned to the encoder—usually by lowering output resolution or changing 60 fps to 30 fps—then test again under the same conditions. But buffering does not prove that your CPU is the cause: first distinguish encoder trouble from GPU rendering, dropped frames caused by the connection, and buffering that affects only a viewer’s playback.
First identify which kind of buffering is happening
“Buffering” can describe two different problems. Your outgoing live feed may be unstable, or a viewer’s device may be struggling to play an otherwise healthy stream. A viewer’s playback buffering, by itself, does not establish that your streaming PC’s CPU is overloaded.

- Look at OBS: Check encoder status and the dropped-frame counters. Note whether OBS reports encoding lag, rendering lag, or dropped frames due to network conditions; these point to different constraints.
- Look at YouTube: Open YouTube Live Control Room and read the stream-health status and any messages. YouTube advises checking encoder errors and CPU load when the outgoing stream looks or sounds poor. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide also points to the outbound connection when encoder output appears healthy.
- Check a local recording if available: If the recording itself has visual or audio problems, investigate the encoder or PC performance. If it looks and sounds clean while the live feed has trouble, prioritize stream health and the connection.
Do not change several settings at once. Record the current settings and counters, change one thing, then test again with the same game, scene, audio, and movement you expect during the real stream. That makes it easier to tell whether the change helped.

An encoding-overloaded warning means the encoder is not keeping up with the settings and workload you have chosen. OBS recommends lowering output resolution or frame rate; if 60 fps is not working reliably, try 30 fps. Make one adjustment, test, and keep the change only if it resolves the problem without an unacceptable loss in image quality or motion smoothness.

Reduce output resolution
Lowering output resolution reduces the amount of image detail the PC must encode. It can also reduce the bitrate you need for a given stream, though the appropriate YouTube bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check YouTube’s current encoder-settings table rather than treating a bitrate recommendation as a substitute for measuring your available upload bandwidth.
Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps
60 fps can make fast movement look smoother, but it asks the PC to process more frames. If the PC cannot sustain the current workload, 30 fps is a practical test. Use the same gameplay or other high-motion content for both tests; a quiet menu scene may not reveal the problem.

Check whether hardware encoding is available
If you are using CPU-based software encoding, OBS says a supported hardware encoder can move encoding work to a specialized component in a compatible GPU. Check that your hardware and drivers support the encoder before selecting it. This is a conditional option, not a reason to assume you need to buy a graphics card, and the resulting image quality depends on the encoder and settings you choose.
CPU encoding and GPU rendering are separate workloads. If OBS identifies rendering lag rather than encoding lag, switching encoders may not address the cause. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide discusses both encoding and rendering performance.

Free up CPU and GPU resources elsewhere
A game, OBS scenes, filters, and browser sources can all compete for resources. OBS notes that its scene composition and rendering require GPU capacity as well as encoding resources. If the warning persists after reducing encoder work, simplify the workload systematically:
- Cap the game’s frame rate: Try a reasonable limit so the game does not use all available rendering capacity. Compare OBS’s counters before and after.
- Lower demanding game graphics settings: Reduce one setting at a time, especially if OBS indicates rendering lag or the game is consuming most GPU capacity.
- Simplify the OBS scene: Temporarily disable costly filters, animations, or browser sources and test. Re-enable items one by one to find whether a particular source contributes to the problem.
- Re-test under representative motion: Use the same scene and activity you intend to stream. If the issue returns only during intense gameplay or a particular scene, that is useful evidence about the workload that exceeds the PC’s capacity.
System requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; there is no single CPU specification that guarantees every streaming setup will work. OBS explains this variability in its system requirements guidance.

If the encoder looks healthy, check upload bandwidth
When OBS output is clean and YouTube’s health messages point to the connection, test upload speed—not just download speed. The stream needs sustained outbound capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom in available upload bandwidth, and warns that a shared home or office connection can leave less capacity for streaming than its headline speed suggests. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a requirement to use those rates regardless of your connection. Check the current table for your codec and mode, then ensure the selected bitrate fits your measured upload capacity.
Test before the next live stream
- Set the resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate you intend to use.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test with representative audio, movement, scenes, and gameplay.
- Watch OBS’s encoder status and dropped-frame counters while also checking YouTube Live Control Room stream health and messages.
- If a problem appears, note which indicator changed, adjust one setting or workload item, and repeat the test under the same conditions.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the event. If the local output remains problematic, its troubleshooting guidance suggests trying a different encoder.
Common symptoms and what to try
| What you see | What it suggests | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports “encoding overloaded” or encoder lag | The encoder may not keep up with the selected output settings and workload. | Lower output resolution or change 60 fps to 30 fps; if using CPU encoding, check for a compatible, supported hardware encoder. |
| OBS reports rendering lag | Scene composition or GPU workload may be the constraint rather than CPU encoding. | Cap the game’s frame rate, reduce demanding graphics settings, or simplify scenes, filters, and browser sources. |
| OBS reports dropped frames due to network conditions, while encoder output is healthy | The outbound connection may be unstable or lack spare upload capacity. | Test upload speed, account for other users and devices, and keep bitrate within available upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| Only some viewers report playback buffering | Their local playback conditions may be involved; this symptom alone does not prove your PC is overloaded. | Check YouTube stream health and OBS indicators before changing your PC’s encoder settings. |
