Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Rejected” can mean FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube, YouTube receives the feed but reports unhealthy stream data, or the connection works but the output settings do not match the selected stream configuration. Diagnose which case you have before changing your command: the fix depends on the exact FFmpeg error, stream key and URL, output settings, cloud host, and Live Control Room message.
First identify where the stream is failing
Keep a copy of the complete FFmpeg command, but redact the stream key before sharing it. Record the installed FFmpeg version and build configuration, the full relevant log excerpt, and the exact stream-health message shown in YouTube Live Control Room. These details distinguish a connection failure from an encoder or stream-health problem; neither “rejected” nor a single generic error identifies the cause by itself.

- FFmpeg never connects or exits at startup: check the destination URL, selected protocol, stream key, and whether the cloud host can reach the destination.
- FFmpeg reports that it is sending, but YouTube shows no incoming feed: check the URL and key, protocol compatibility, and outbound network path.
- YouTube receives the feed but marks it unhealthy: compare codecs, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio, and encoder performance with YouTube’s current guidance.
- The preview appears but playback is unstable or has interruptions: check real-time encoding performance and stable server-to-YouTube upload capacity.
FFmpeg’s own log describes what the encoder and output connection are doing. Live Control Room describes what YouTube is receiving. Check both rather than treating either display as a complete diagnosis.
Check the YouTube destination and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the intended live stream and copy its current stream URL and key into the matching FFmpeg output configuration. Confirm that the stream key is configured for the protocol you intend to use. A key or URL from another stream, an old key, or an RTMP URL paired with an HLS key can prevent the feed from arriving as expected.

- Open the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room and locate its stream settings.
- Copy the current URL and stream key. If you suspect the key is stale or exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Check that the URL and key belong to the same stream and protocol configuration.
- Restart FFmpeg and inspect both its output and Live Control Room’s preview or stream-health status.
Treat the key like a password: do not paste it into a public support post, screenshot, or unredacted log. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance specifically advises copying the stream key from the Stream tab into the encoder and updating the encoder if the key is reset.
Match the FFmpeg output to YouTube’s current encoder settings
Use YouTube Help’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” page for the current settings table. Its recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose a bitrate from the row that matches your actual output rather than borrowing a number from a different format.

- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure form of RTMP. Confirm that both the selected YouTube stream configuration and your installed FFmpeg build support the protocol you use.
- Video codec: YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. Verify that the codec you encode and the protocol you selected are supported together in your setup.
- Frame rate: YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Set the output to a frame rate your source and encoder can sustain.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Select the bitrate range for your precise codec, resolution, and frame rate from its current table.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Check that FFmpeg is actually producing an audio stream if the live output is expected to include sound.
These are YouTube Help’s published recommendations; the page does not state a publication year here, and settings can change. Check the live table before applying a configuration. If you need a starting point for command syntax, FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows a generic real-time file-to-RTMP example: ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. That is an illustrative example for a generic server, not a tested YouTube command or a complete YouTube configuration. Use the current YouTube URL and key, and add output settings compatible with the selected stream configuration. Never put a real key in a command you intend to publish.
Check that the cloud encoder can keep up
A cloud VM can have a valid command and destination yet fail to encode at the intended real-time rate. Inspect FFmpeg’s output for errors, whether input media opens correctly, whether expected audio and video streams are present, and whether encoding is progressing at the intended pace. Check available CPU and other host metrics while FFmpeg is running; do not assume the VM is overloaded without evidence, but do not assume it has enough capacity just because the command started.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder for errors, inspecting the stream’s appearance and sound, reviewing CPU load, and checking local archive media where available. If you can record or inspect an output sample, confirm that its picture and audio are usable. A successful local encode does not, by itself, prove that the cloud host can deliver the stream reliably to YouTube.
Measure the server’s outbound path to YouTube
The relevant capacity is upload from the cloud server to YouTube—not the server’s download speed. YouTube advises that the total outgoing bitrate stay within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. It also warns that connection disruption can break a stream; as YouTube Help puts it, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”

- Compare the total outgoing audio and video bitrate with the cloud host’s available outbound capacity.
- Leave the recommended 20% headroom rather than planning to use the entire measured upload capacity.
- Check FFmpeg logs for connection interruptions and inspect packet-loss or network metrics if your provider makes them available.
- Review the cloud provider’s current network documentation and policy for the selected destination and protocol.
- Test the route and stream under representative load before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
There is no universal provider firewall rule or port list established here. Cloud network policies differ, so do not open ports or change security settings based on a guessed rule. Confirm the required outbound access in your provider’s current documentation.

Choose RTMPS or HLS for the actual requirement
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure RTMP option for ordinary encoder workflows. HLS is a separate ingestion method, not a general fix for a wrong RTMP key or unsuitable bitrate. YouTube documents HLS for HDR or codecs that are not supported through RTMP; it has higher latency because it sends segments.

| Consideration | RTMP/RTMPS | HLS |
|---|---|---|
| When it fits | YouTube recommends RTMPS for its encoder workflow. | YouTube documents HLS for HDR or codecs unsupported through RTMP. |
| Latency | Use the selected YouTube configuration and review its stream health. | Higher latency than RTMP because HLS sends segments. |
| Configuration | Use the matching YouTube URL and stream key, plus compatible output settings. | Select an HLS protocol stream key and copy the HTTPS Stream URL. |
| HLS-specific output requirements | Not applicable. | TS segments of 1–4 seconds; no byte ranges; rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments; HTTPS POST/PUT; no encryption beyond HTTPS. |
If you switch to HLS, configure FFmpeg to produce the required HLS output and use the HLS URL and key. YouTube’s HLS instructions specify the segment and playlist requirements; merely changing the URL while retaining an RTMP-style output is not a complete protocol change. Check that the installed FFmpeg build supports the output workflow you plan to use.
Test safely and add reconnect handling only where it helps
Before depending on the stream, test it as private or unlisted and inspect Live Control Room’s preview and stream health. Use representative movement and audio, not only a static or silent sample, and monitor the stream during the test. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health; it also recommends a speed test for upload bitrate.
FFmpeg documents reconnect options for some protocols and errors, including network-error reconnect controls. Their behavior depends on the option, protocol, and installed FFmpeg version/build. Check the local version’s supported options before adding them. Reconnect handling may help with covered transient network errors, but it cannot repair a wrong key, incompatible output, inadequate encoding capacity, or a route that remains blocked. A retry loop is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg fails before sending data | URL, stream key, protocol selection, or outbound reachability | Copy the current URL and key from the intended Live Control Room stream, verify the protocol pairing, then inspect the complete FFmpeg error and provider network policy. |
| FFmpeg sends but YouTube shows no feed | Destination/key mismatch, protocol mismatch, or server egress | Confirm the stream’s current URL and key, check whether the selected protocol matches, and investigate outbound connection errors or provider network restrictions. |
| YouTube sees a feed but flags it unhealthy | Codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, audio, or encoder performance | Compare the output with the current YouTube settings table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate; inspect FFmpeg logs and host load. |
| Feed starts, then breaks up or disconnects | Outbound capacity, connection stability, or encoding falling behind | Check upload headroom, available provider network metrics, FFmpeg errors, and host performance during a representative test. |
| Image is present but audio is missing or wrong | Input audio stream, FFmpeg mapping/encoding, or audio codec | Inspect the input and output audio streams and confirm the output codec is AAC or MP3 as listed in YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| RTMP does not meet an HDR or codec requirement | Protocol and feature compatibility | Check whether YouTube’s HLS workflow is appropriate, then configure its HLS stream key, HTTPS URL, and segment/playlist requirements rather than treating HLS as a generic retry. |
