If YouTube Live rejects an FFmpeg stream key, first verify that the key and ingest URL were copied from the exact Live Control Room stream you intend to use. Then check whether the failure is actually a key/authentication problem, an RTMP/RTMPS connection problem, or a media-format issue shown in stream health. A 24/7 schedule by itself does not identify the cause.
1. Confirm the stream and refresh its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the scheduled or current stream that FFmpeg should feed.
- Copy that stream’s Stream URL and Stream key from its settings. Use the URL and key as a pair; do not substitute a guessed ingest address, a URL from another stream, or a saved key that may have been reset.
- Put the URL and key into the matching destination fields in your FFmpeg setup. If you use a combined destination string, follow the format expected by your encoder interface; YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation notes that the stream URL and stream name may need to be combined depending on the encoder.
- If the key may have been reset or the stream settings changed, update FFmpeg with the current key. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key.
YouTube describes keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat one as a secret: do not paste it into a public forum or share an unredacted FFmpeg command. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

2. Separate a key problem from an RTMP/RTMPS connection problem
A rejected key and a connection that cannot reach YouTube are different stages. Check the actual destination protocol, server, and any SSL or timeout message before changing keys repeatedly.

- Use the RTMPS URL shown for the selected stream in Live Control Room. YouTube displays the ordinary RTMP URL by default unless you use the lock control to reveal RTMPS.
- Check that the URL uses the RTMPS protocol and the valid YouTube server and application/path shown for that stream. A plausible-looking but stale or guessed URL is not a reliable substitute.
- If YouTube reports an SSL error, its guidance says to check port 443 and try specifying that port in the URL or encoder configuration.
- If the connection times out, confirm that your FFmpeg build and configuration support RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance.
Do not switch to HLS as a generic key fix
HLS is a distinct ingestion mode, not an automatic remedy for an RTMP/RTMPS key or URL error. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies HTTPS, muxed M2TS media, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and playlist and segment handling; HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP- or WebRTC-based ingestion. Consider it only if the chosen stream configuration or encoder capability calls for HLS. YouTube HLS ingestion guidance.

3. Check what FFmpeg actually sends
Once the destination is correct, validate the emitted stream rather than relying only on what a command was intended to encode. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists these compatibility requirements and recommendations:
- Video: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; up to 60 fps.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For 5.1-channel audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports AAC only.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: two-second frequency recommended, with an interval no longer than four seconds.
- Bitrate: match the recommendation to the output resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s table recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p/30 fps. These are recommendations, not guaranteed minimum upload capacities.
These are checks for compatibility; the available error details do not establish that any one of them caused a particular key rejection. Consult YouTube’s current settings table for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

4. Use Live Control Room messages to choose the next check
Check the selected stream’s stream-health status and messages while FFmpeg is connecting and sending media. YouTube’s API health documentation includes issues such as unsupported codecs and configuration mismatches. If YouTube receives the feed but flags its media or configuration, follow the reported status rather than repeatedly replacing the key. YouTube also recommends testing with representative audio and motion before an event and monitoring stream health during it. YouTube LiveStreams API documentation; YouTube encoder guidance.
Troubleshooting by symptom

| Feed reaches YouTube but stream health reports an issue | Use the specific health message to check codec, format, or configuration compatibility. Verify the actual encoded output against YouTube’s current requirements. |
| Stream connects but is unstable | Compare the output bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for its resolution and frame rate, then assess whether the available uplink can sustain that output. Do not treat a bitrate recommendation as a guaranteed minimum connection speed. |
What to include when asking for help
If these checks do not resolve the failure, share the exact YouTube error or stream-health text, whether the destination is RTMP or RTMPS, and the selected stream’s health state. Include the FFmpeg command with the stream key and any credentials redacted. Those details distinguish a stale key or wrong stream selection from an endpoint, transport, or media-validation issue.
