Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst identify whether OBS is reporting encoding overload, rendering lag, or dropped frames: they look similar in the stream but need different fixes. Check View > Docks > Stats in OBS while the problem is happening, then reduce the workload that matches the rising counter. For a 24/7 stream, test every change and watch the stream before leaving it unattended.
Identify the problem before changing settings
Open OBS’s Stats window and observe which counter increases during the affected stream. The session log can add useful detail, but without your log, hardware specifications, and counters, no single cause can be diagnosed remotely.

- Rendering lag or GPU overload: OBS cannot composite and render scenes quickly enough. A game may still look smooth while OBS struggles because the GPU is busy or another system bottleneck limits it. Lowering bitrate alone does not address scene rendering.
- Encoding overload: OBS cannot encode the requested output with the available resources, so the stream can become choppy. Reduce the output workload and free resources before concluding that the computer needs an upgrade.
- Dropped frames: The connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable, or the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate. This is a network-path issue, not the same problem as local encoding overload.
OBS’s official encoding performance guide covers resource-related rendering and encoding issues; YouTube’s live encoder settings explains bitrate and stream-health guidance for delivery.

Fix rendering lag or GPU overload
1. Run OBS as administrator on Windows
Close OBS, then reopen it by right-clicking the OBS shortcut and choosing Run as administrator. OBS recommends trying this early on Windows; it can help OBS obtain GPU resources. This is not a fix for dropped frames caused by the network.

2. Free GPU resources
Check Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS for programs using substantial GPU resources. Close only applications you recognize and do not need for the stream. If a game is running, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync so it does not consume all available GPU capacity.
3. Reduce OBS rendering work
- Simplify busy scenes: remove or disable sources, filters, animations, and browser sources that are not needed.
- Reduce the output resolution and frame rate in Settings > Video. A lower resolution reduces encoder work; a lower frame rate reduces both rendering and encoding work. If 60 fps is unstable, try 30 fps.
- Changing the base canvas resolution is more disruptive: sources may need to be repositioned. Consider it only if the system remains severely constrained after less disruptive reductions.
Fix encoding overload
Reduce the workload, then retest
Lower output resolution or frame rate and close unnecessary CPU- or GPU-intensive applications. Change one setting at a time, apply it, and watch OBS Stats and the YouTube preview long enough to see whether the overload counter stops increasing. If the problem remains, check whether the encoder is CPU-based or hardware-based and whether that option is supported on your operating system and hardware.

Consider a compatible hardware encoder
Hardware encoding moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance, but this is conditional: if OBS is falling behind while rendering scenes on an overloaded GPU, a GPU hardware encoder may not solve that rendering bottleneck. Diagnose the counter first.

Availability and capabilities vary by platform and hardware; see OBS’s hardware encoding guide. Check YouTube output settings without confusing them with the cause
YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding, a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. Its bitrate figures are ingestion recommendations, not evidence that bitrate caused a local OBS overload. Match the setting to your codec, resolution, frame rate, and sustainable upload capacity, then use YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
| H.264 output | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current published H.264 recommendations, accessed in 2026; other codecs, resolutions, and frame rates have separate ranges on the encoder settings page. If OBS Stats shows dropped frames rather than encoding or rendering lag, check the network connection and whether the selected bitrate is sustainable instead of treating bitrate as a local encoder fix.

Validate the fix for a continuous stream
A 24/7 stream needs monitoring and recovery planning; no one OBS configuration is established as safe for every machine or guaranteed to stay live indefinitely. Before relying on a change, test with audio and movement similar to the real program, preview the stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Watch OBS Stats over time and review logs from the period when the issue occurred.
- Check that local archive files are growing and intact, and that the event is reachable.
- If you use a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will work.
These checks can reveal degradation and whether your recovery arrangements work; they do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.

Common symptoms and what to try
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | First actions |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports encoding overload; output is choppy | Encoding workload or limited system resources | Close unnecessary applications; reduce output resolution or frame rate; check encoder choice and compatibility. |
| Rendering lag or GPU overload while a game remains smooth | GPU resources or scene-composition workload | On Windows, run OBS as administrator; cap the game’s frame rate or use V-Sync; simplify scenes and reduce output workload. |
| Dropped frames, with encoding and rendering counters not showing the same problem | Connection to the ingest server or unsustainable bitrate | Check connection stability and YouTube stream health; ensure bitrate fits available upload capacity. |
| Problem returns after a long stable period | Long-run resource pressure or a changing network path; the exact cause is not established without session data | Compare Stats and logs from affected periods, monitor stream health, and verify archives and tested backup arrangements. |
