The “Your screen is being observed” message on a Mac is a Lock Screen privacy reminder that software is sharing, mirroring, or recording the display. It does not identify the app or prove that an unknown person is watching. Check the active sharing or recording session first, then review macOS sharing and recording permissions.
What the message means—and what it doesn’t
Apple says the Lock Screen may show this reminder while software shares or records your screen. It can appear during ordinary activities such as presenting in a video call, recording a tutorial, or mirroring the Mac’s display. The notice alone does not tell you which software triggered it or who, if anyone, can see the content.

Possible triggers include:
- Screen sharing in a videoconferencing app.
- AirPlay or other software displaying the Mac on a television or external display.
- Screen Sharing, Apple Remote Desktop, or VNC access from another device.
- Screen-capture apps or macOS’s built-in screen-recording feature.
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of what is running on your Mac. Apple’s explanation is in its support article about the “Your screen is being observed” message, published 2 April 2025.

Find and stop the active sharing or recording session
Start with what you were doing when the notice appeared. If you were in a meeting, using remote support, mirroring to another display, or capturing the screen, end that session using the app’s own share, mirror, or record control. Then check whether the notice stops appearing.

This is different from changing a permission: ending a session stops the activity currently in progress, while a permission determines whether an app can access screen or system-audio recording features when it requests them.
Review Screen Sharing in macOS
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing.
- Review Screen Sharing. Turn it off if you do not want another computer on your network to view and control this Mac.
- If you use remote administration, review Remote Management as well. Apple notes that Screen Sharing and Remote Management cannot both be on at the same time.

Check screen and system-audio recording permissions
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Inspect the apps listed there and turn off access for apps that do not need to record your screen or system audio.
- If you rely on an app for meetings or capture, consider whether it needs this access before disabling it; changing access can affect its screen-sharing or recording features.
Allowing an app does not by itself show that it is recording at this moment. Apple notes that the terms and privacy policies of third-party apps and websites govern the information they collect. Details are in the Mac User Guide section on screen and system-audio recording access.

- Update macOS.
- Restart your Mac and check whether the message returns.
- If it persists, start the Mac in Safe Mode. Safe Mode can help determine whether third-party software that loads at startup is involved; it is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
