How to Fix “Your Connection Is Not Private” in Chrome and Firefox

A Chrome or Firefox privacy warning means the browser could not verify the connection. Use the error code and whether one or many sites fail to choose safe next steps.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Don’t click through the warning yet. First read its error code and check your device’s date and time. If only one site is affected, the site may need to fix its certificate; if many unrelated sites fail, check your device, Wi-Fi sign-in, or network security software. Neither Chrome nor Firefox’s warning proves an attack is happening, but it means the browser could not verify the connection, so don’t enter passwords or payment details until you understand the cause.

What the warning means in Chrome and Firefox

Chrome typically shows “Your connection is not private,” often with a code such as NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID or NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID. Firefox commonly shows “Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead”; select Advanced to see the error code. In either browser, the warning means it could not validate the site’s certificate or another condition required for a secure connection. It is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that someone is attacking you. Google Chrome Help and Mozilla Support explain the warnings and troubleshooting steps.

The exact code, how many sites are affected, and whether you’re on public Wi-Fi or a managed device help narrow down the cause. Switching browsers alone is not a fix: both rely on certificate checks, though their messages and code names differ.

Try these safe checks in order

  1. Pause before entering sensitive information. Don’t submit passwords, payment details, or personal data on a page while the connection is unverified.
  2. Read and record the full error code. In Firefox, open Advanced to view it. The code can help you or a support technician identify whether the issue concerns the clock, the certificate issuer, or the site name.
  3. Check your device’s date and time. Correct an inaccurate clock, including the time zone if it is wrong. A bad clock can make a certificate appear expired or not yet valid. If the time is already correct, continue rather than repeatedly changing it.
  4. Check whether one site or many are affected. If one public site fails while others work, its certificate may be expired, issued for a different domain, or missing part of its issuer chain. Contact the site owner. If many unrelated sites fail, investigate the device or network instead.
  5. If you’re on guest Wi-Fi, complete its sign-in. A network portal may need you to accept terms or sign in before secure sites work. Chrome suggests opening an HTTP page to trigger the portal, then completing the sign-in before retrying the site.
  6. On a computer using Chrome, test in Incognito. If the site works there, an extension may be involved. Disable extensions one at a time in your regular window to identify the cause. Incognito is a diagnostic test; it does not make an invalid certificate safe.
  7. Install available operating-system updates. Chrome includes updating the operating system among its recommended troubleshooting steps.
  8. Consider HTTPS inspection only in context. Some security products scan encrypted connections, and employers may use a proxy to inspect them. Either can affect which certificate the browser sees. Ask the security-software vendor or your organization’s IT administrator for help; do not install a proxy certificate yourself unless a trusted administrator directs you to.
  9. If the error points to a public site’s certificate, contact its owner. Site operators must correct certificate problems such as an expired certificate, a domain mismatch, or an incomplete certificate chain.

Use the code to choose the next step

Code or code family What it can indicate Useful next step
NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID The device clock may be inaccurate, or the certificate may have a date-validity problem. Check the device date and time. If they are correct, contact the site owner.
NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID or SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER The browser cannot establish trust in the certificate’s issuer. An untrusted or missing issuer, an incomplete intermediate chain, or a managed network’s proxy setup may be involved. If this affects one site, contact its owner. If it occurs across sites on a managed network, ask the administrator or security-software vendor.
MOZILLA_PKIX_ERROR_MITM_DETECTED Mozilla describes this as an unknown-issuer case in which a man-in-the-middle attack is detected. HTTPS inspection software can also be involved. Check whether inspection software or a managed network is in use, and seek support. Don’t assume the warning is harmless.
SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN The certificate is not valid for the site name you opened. Contact the site owner; the certificate configuration may need correction.
SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_CERTIFICATE The site’s identity certificate has expired. Verify the device clock. If it is correct, contact the site owner.

These are clues, not definitive diagnoses: the surrounding details matter. Mozilla’s warning and error-code guide explains the Firefox codes, while Chrome Help covers its certificate-warning workflow.

Should you bypass the warning?

For an ordinary public website, no. Mozilla warns that an invalid certificate can signal fraud or interception and that legitimate public sites should not require a certificate exception. Some Firefox warnings cannot be bypassed at all. Don’t proceed just because you recognize the brand or have visited the site before; that does not verify the connection you have now.

Exceptions belong only in a controlled situation where a trusted administrator or other qualified support person has explained the specific cause and the appropriate action. Don’t disable security protections or add certificates as general troubleshooting shortcuts.

When to contact someone

  • One public website is affected: contact the website owner and include the error code. The site operator may need to renew or correctly configure its certificate.
  • Many sites fail on a work or school device: contact the organization’s IT administrator. A managed proxy or its certificate configuration may be involved.
  • Many sites fail on a personal device with HTTPS scanning enabled: ask the security product’s support team how to diagnose the scanning feature safely. Avoid turning off protection as a blanket fix.
  • The warning appears on public Wi-Fi: complete the network’s sign-in portal before treating it as a site-specific problem.
