Discord’s “You are being rate limited” message means it has temporarily refused more requests because too many similar requests arrived in a short period. In API terms this is usually HTTP 429 Too Many Requests. Stop repeating the blocked action, wait for any displayed timer, check Discord’s service status, then retry once. Discord does not publish one universal cooldown for every consumer-facing rate limit.
What the Discord rate-limit error means
Rate limiting is an anti-abuse and traffic-control measure designed to limit spam, automated activity and service overload. A temporary rate limit is not, by itself, proof that your account is banned, disabled or permanently blocked. It is also different from a wrong password, a server ban, a normal connection failure and Discord’s separate Limited Access state. Discord documents the API behavior at its rate-limits reference.
The restriction can apply to one action, your account, your public IP/network, or a broader Discord service problem. Examples include joining servers, accepting invites, sending friend requests, requesting verification codes, changing account details, logging in repeatedly or sending messages rapidly.
Do these steps first
- Stop retrying. Do not keep clicking, refreshing, logging in, submitting invites or requesting new codes. Repeated attempts can prolong or retrigger a limit.
- Record the blocked action. Note whether it was login, verification, an invite, a server join, messaging or another operation.
- Close Discord everywhere. Quit the desktop app rather than only closing its window; on Windows, end remaining Discord processes in Task Manager.
- Wait for the displayed timer. If no timer appears, wait instead of repeatedly testing the action.
- Check Discord Status. Discord’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking for service incidents before changing local settings: Discord Troubleshooting Guide.
- Retry once, slowly. If it still fails, move to the diagnostic steps below rather than repeatedly submitting the same request.
How long does the limit last?
There is no officially published universal wait such as 15, 30 or 60 minutes for every Discord user-facing message. The duration depends on the action, endpoint, account, IP and whether the limit is local, shared or global. API responses may provide an exact retry_after value in seconds; software should honor that value or the Retry-After header.

For the specific “changing your e-mail too fast” or related email-verification guidance, Discord says to wait 24 hours before trying again. That instruction applies to that email case and should not be generalized to every rate limit: Discord Login & Email Troubleshooting Guide.
Find out whether it is your account or network
- Try the official web client if the desktop app failed, or the official desktop/mobile app if the browser failed.
- After waiting, test the same account once on another trusted connection, such as mobile data. Do not create extra accounts or cycle through VPN locations.
- If the error follows the account across devices and networks, an account- or action-specific restriction is more likely.
- If Discord works on mobile data but not home Wi-Fi, investigate the home network, public IP, router, ISP, proxy or firewall.
- If several Discord users on the same network are affected, suspect a shared network/IP issue rather than one account.
These comparisons indicate scope but cannot prove Discord’s exact enforcement reason. Discord notes that authenticated requests can be limited by user or bot, while unauthenticated requests can be limited by IP.
Local fixes worth trying after the cooldown
Use an official, updated client
Test Discord in the web app and in the current official desktop or mobile app. Avoid unofficial clients, scripts and automation while diagnosing the problem.

Cache clearing or reinstalling cannot remove account-, IP- or server-side enforcement. Use it later if the client appears corrupted, not as the first response to a temporary 429.
Check proxy, firewall and antivirus interference
Temporarily test whether a proxy, firewall, antivirus filter, parental-control system or managed school/work network is blocking Discord. Add Discord to an appropriate allowlist and immediately re-enable protection after testing. See Discord’s console-log troubleshooting guide.
Restart the router only as a network test
Restarting a modem/router can resolve ordinary connectivity faults, but it may not change your public IP and cannot clear an account-specific limit. Discord’s restart advice is for connection problems: Voice Connection Errors.
Situation-specific recovery
Phone or email verification
Stop requesting codes, confirm the address or number, and do not repeatedly switch numbers, email addresses or devices. Follow Discord’s 24-hour instruction only when the email-change/verification message specifically calls for it. Contact support if the stated wait passes without recovery.

Joining servers or accepting invites
Stop opening and submitting more invites, wait, then ask the server owner for a fresh invite. If other Discord features work and only one invite fails after the cooldown, it may be expired, invalid or server-specific rather than a general account limit. A historical community discussion mentions invite-related rate limiting, but it is not current official policy: Discord community post.
Friend requests, messages and login
Stop repeated submissions or login attempts and wait. Test another official client once after the cooldown. Do not create replacement accounts; that can trigger additional verification or suspicious-activity checks.

Discord’s Limited Access FAQ describes a distinct restriction that can prevent new server joins and new direct messages while some existing-friend messaging remains available. Follow its account-review route instead of treating the banner as an ordinary timer.
Should you use a VPN?
Not as the first fix. Testing another trusted network can help identify an IP-specific problem, but a VPN does not fix an account-level limit. Shared VPN addresses may already have poor reputation, and changing IPs can trigger extra verification. VPN use may also violate school or workplace rules. Discord’s troubleshooting material discusses VPN or firewall interference for connection problems; it does not endorse VPNs for bypassing rate limits. Never use one to evade a ban or security restriction.

Discord documents X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining, X-RateLimit-Reset, X-RateLimit-Reset-After, X-RateLimit-Bucket, X-RateLimit-Global and X-RateLimit-Scope. A global: true response indicates a global limit. Discord documents up to 50 requests per second for bots and an invalid-request limit of 10,000 requests per 10 minutes per IP, involving 401, 403 and 429 responses. Stop invalid tokens, webhooks, unauthorized endpoints and exhausted route retries.
When to contact Discord Support
Contact Discord when the error continues well beyond any displayed cooldown, appears across multiple trusted networks and devices, blocks login or recovery, or persists with no outage shown. Also contact support for a Limited Access banner or a long-running shared-network problem.
Submit a request at Discord Support. Include the exact error, blocked action, approximate time and time zone, platform, app version, network comparison, screenshots and relevant logs. Does “You are being rate limited” mean I am banned?
No. It normally indicates a temporary request limit, not a permanent account or server ban.
Will restarting my router remove the limit?
Not if the restriction is tied to your account or action. A restart is only a network diagnostic and may not change your public IP.

Will clearing Discord’s cache help?
It can help a damaged client, but it cannot remove server-side account, IP or action enforcement.
