There is no “force 4K” switch on a Mac: Apple TV automatically selects the highest quality supported by the title, playback method, Mac, display connection and network. First check that the title offers 4K, use Safari for web playback or enable the Apple TV app’s High Quality (Up to 4K) setting, then test on the Mac’s built-in display. If that works but an external screen does not, troubleshoot the connection between the Mac and display.

Check the three most common limits first

  1. Confirm the title offers 4K. Open its product page in the Apple TV app and look for a 4K badge. The badge describes the highest format Apple offers for that title; it does not guarantee every playback route can deliver it. Apple’s Apple TV 4K support page explains title badges and purchase quality.
  2. Identify how you are watching. The Apple TV app has a high-quality streaming preference. On tv.apple.com, Apple says current Safari on a Mac with current macOS may play compatible content up to 4K HDR; Chrome, Firefox and Edge on Mac may play up to 1080p.
  3. Test the Mac’s built-in display. If playback looks better there than on an external screen, focus on the external display, adapter, cable, dock, receiver or TV input rather than changing the Mac’s desktop resolution.

Apple defines 4K as 3840 × 2160 and HD as 1920 × 1080. HDR and Dolby Vision concern image range and format, not resolution: a picture can be 4K without HDR, and missing HDR does not by itself prove the stream is only HD.

Set the Apple TV app to its highest streaming quality

  1. Open the Apple TV app.
  2. In the menu bar, choose TV → Settings.
  3. Click Playback.
  4. Under Streaming Options, choose High Quality (Up to 4K).
  5. Close Settings and start playback again.

This preference permits the app to use the highest available stream; “Up to 4K” is not a promise that every title or setup will play in 4K. If the app is set to Data Saver, it prioritizes reducing data use and may lower quality. The app’s download settings are separate: Apple says a 4K version cannot be downloaded to a Mac, though HD downloads and, for some content, HDR or Dolby Vision downloads may be available. See Apple’s Mac playback settings guide.

Use Safari for 4K playback in a browser

If you are watching on the website, update macOS and try the latest Safari directly at tv.apple.com. Sign in with the Apple Account that has the relevant subscription or purchase. Apple’s current browser guidance says compatible content may play up to 4K HDR in Safari on Mac, while Chrome, Firefox and Edge on Mac may play up to 1080p. Switching between those three browsers is therefore not a route to 4K on a Mac.

Compare website playback with the Apple TV app if available. Safari’s higher ceiling does not override title availability, account access, system compatibility, display limitations or network conditions.

Check the title and Apple Account

Look on the movie or show’s Apple TV product page for the 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos badges. A badge identifies the highest listed format Apple offers for that title; individual purchases, rentals, Apple TV+ programs and channel content do not all have identical format availability.

  • An SD purchase cannot be turned into 4K by changing a setting.
  • Some HD purchases may receive 4K or HDR upgrades when Apple makes them available, but an upgrade is title-dependent.
  • For a purchase, rental or subscription, confirm you are signed in with the Apple Account that has access to it.

If one title stays in HD while others play at higher quality, the title or purchase is a more likely explanation than a Mac-wide setting.

Isolate the Mac from an external display

Play the same title on the Mac’s built-in display first, then compare it with the external monitor or TV. The macOS desktop’s scaled resolution is not a reliable indicator of the video stream’s resolution: a scaled desktop can coexist with high-quality video, and a 4K display can still receive an HD stream.

Identify the Mac and chip at Apple menu → About This Mac. Install available updates at System Settings → General → Software Update. A Mac’s ability to play video and its ability to output a particular 4K or HDR signal through a particular connection are separate questions.

Apple’s HDR guidance lists supported Mac families, but these are HDR requirements—not a guarantee that every model, title and connection supports every 4K/HDR format. The listed families include MacBook Pro from 2018 or later; MacBook Air from 2018 or later, with Apple silicon required for HDR on external displays; iMac from 2020 or later and iMac Pro; Mac mini from 2018 or later; Mac Studio from 2022 or later; Mac Pro from 2019 or later; and MacBook Neo. Troubleshoot the external display and connection

For an external screen, check the whole path: Mac → adapter or dock → HDMI cable → receiver or soundbar, if present → TV or monitor. Each part and the selected input must support the signal you are trying to send.

  1. In System Settings → Displays, check the selected display and resolution. Confirm the monitor or TV supports the resolution and refresh rate you expect.
  2. Check the TV’s specifications for the chosen HDMI input. Some TVs require an enhanced input mode, with names such as “Enhanced,” “UHD Color” or “Deep Color.” These labels vary by manufacturer.
  3. Bypass a dock, receiver or soundbar and connect the Mac directly to the display. Apple recommends a direct-connection test when diagnosing external video or HDR problems.
  4. Try another HDMI input and a different cable. “4K” on a cable label alone does not establish support for the required refresh rate, HDR, HDCP or the bandwidth of the full chain.
  5. Check the adapter, dock, receiver and display manufacturer’s specifications and firmware. Apple names its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter and a Belkin USB-C-to-HDMI adapter as compatible examples for HDR setups, but suitability still depends on the complete equipment chain.

For a supported third-party HDR display, look in Displays settings for the High Dynamic Range control. If it is absent, the Mac, macOS, display or connection may not meet the requirement. Apple’s HDR setup guidance covers supported connections, while its Mac HDMI and HDCP guidance covers display-connection requirements.

Check network speed and stability

Apple recommends at least 25 Mbps for 4K streaming. That is a minimum recommendation, not a guarantee: a speed test measures one moment, and Wi-Fi interference, congestion or changing throughput can still lead to adaptive quality or buffering.

  • Run a speed test on the Mac where you normally watch.
  • Pause large downloads, cloud sync, game downloads and other heavy network use.
  • If Wi-Fi is unstable, test Ethernet where practical; restart the router and Mac.
  • Try another network only as a diagnostic to see whether the original connection is involved.

If playback starts clearly and then becomes softer or buffers, fluctuating throughput is one plausible cause. A result above 25 Mbps does not rule out instability elsewhere between the Mac and Apple’s streaming service.

Separate HDR problems from 4K problems

If the picture looks flatter or HDR is missing, check HDR separately from resolution. Apple says the battery setting Optimize video streaming while on battery can cause HDR video to play in SDR; that documented effect is not proof that the setting alone reduces 4K resolution.

  1. Connect the Mac to power, or open System Settings → Battery → Options, if available.
  2. Turn off Optimize video streaming while on battery.
  3. Reopen playback and check the HDR behavior again.

External HDR also depends on the Mac, macOS, display and connection supporting the format. A missing HDR control or SDR picture may reflect one of those requirements rather than a loss of 4K resolution.

Reset the app or restart the Mac

If the title and setup should support higher quality but playback remains limited, refresh the app state before changing hardware.

  1. Quit the Apple TV app completely and reopen it.
  2. In the app, choose TV → Settings → Advanced and use an available cache-clearing or reset control.
  3. Quit and reopen the app, then retry the title. Restart the Mac if the problem remains.

Advanced controls and their labels can vary by Apple TV app and macOS revision. Clearing cache or history may remove local app state or viewing-history data. Apple describes the available controls in its Apple TV app settings guide and recommends restarting for playback problems in its Apple TV app playback help.

If you are using AirPlay, troubleshoot that path separately

AirPlay or screen mirroring adds a receiving device and a network path; it is not the same as playing natively in the Mac app or Safari. Put the Mac and receiver on the same Wi-Fi network, update and restart both devices, and check AirPlay receiving permissions. If the receiver is configured in the Home app, check its restrictions there as well. Then test the title directly in the Apple TV app on the Apple TV or smart TV. Apple’s AirPlay troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

When you cannot restore 4K on this setup

  • The title is not offered in 4K, or the purchase is SD.
  • You are using a Mac browser Apple lists as limited to up to 1080p on tv.apple.com.
  • The Mac, display or connection chain cannot support the required video format.
  • The title or format is unavailable for the relevant account, service or region.
  • You are trying to download rather than stream a 4K copy: Apple says Mac downloads are not 4K.

In these cases, changing the desktop resolution or buying a cable cannot create a 4K stream that the title or playback route does not provide. If every title remains HD after the checks above, try the same title on another compatible Apple device to help distinguish an account or title issue from a Mac-specific one.
