A vertical mouse is designed to support a handshake-like hand position, but it may still feel uncomfortable if it does not fit your hand, sits too far away, or requires a tight grip or awkward wrist movement. Start by adjusting fit, placement, pointer speed and work pattern. If discomfort persists, try a different mouse shape or pointing device; no one design suits everyone.
1. Check the mouse fit and your grip
The mouse should fit your hand and let your hand rest comfortably around it. Your forearm, wrist and fingers should form a relatively straight line, and your grip should be relaxed rather than clenched. A mouse that is too large or small, or buttons that require force or make you spread your fingers awkwardly, can make use less comfortable. These fit and posture recommendations come from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), which notes that there is no one-size-fits-all mouse: mouse selection and use guidance.

2. Bring the mouse within easy reach
Place the mouse close to the keyboard and on the same working surface. Keep your upper arm near your body, rather than reaching outward or forward. A mouse that is too far away can require sustained arm elevation, while hard or sharp desk edges can put pressure on the forearm or wrist. OSHA and Mayo Clinic both describe workstation adjustments that support a more comfortable position: OSHA guidance on pointer and mouse setup and Mayo Clinic’s office ergonomics guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Adjust pointer speed and use a light touch
Set pointer sensitivity so you can move the pointer across the screen while keeping your wrist comfortable and relatively straight. If the setting is too low, you may need large wrist or arm movements; if it is too high, precise control may encourage a tense or forceful grip. Aim for a setting that feels controllable with a light touch, and avoid squeezing the mouse. OSHA’s pointer and mouse guidance identifies mouse sensitivity, grip force and wrist deviation as factors that can contribute to awkward or effortful use.

4. Break up repetitive mouse work
Long, uninterrupted stretches of repetitive or static computer work can leave little opportunity for movement and recovery. Where practical, use keyboard shortcuts, alternate tasks, and pause briefly to move. OSHA’s work-process guidance offers five minutes every hour as an example of a short break schedule for computer users; it is a general example, not a personalized medical prescription or guaranteed treatment.
5. Decide whether another pointing device fits better
A vertical mouse is one option for supporting a handshake-like wrist position, not a guarantee of comfort. If adjustments do not help, judge alternatives by how they fit your hand and operating side, whether they let you keep a comfortable wrist position, how much workspace they use, where the movement comes from, and how much force their buttons require.

Try a different mouse shape
Different shapes and sizes suit different hands. When considering another vertical mouse or a conventional design, assess the actual fit and how comfortably you can control the pointer rather than relying on the product category alone. CCOHS explains why there is no single best mouse in its selection and use guidance.
Consider a trackball if you want less arm movement
A trackball lets you control the pointer while keeping the hand and arm more stationary. OSHA notes that a trackball or another pointing device may be less fatiguing for certain tasks, but that does not establish it as the best choice for every person or task. Try it only if the fit and control feel comfortable for you; see OSHA’s pointer and mouse guidance.

6. Use a wrist rest cautiously
OSHA lists a mouse pad with a wrist or palm rest as one possible aid for neutral posture and contact stress. CCOHS, however, says research on wrist rests is inconclusive and warns that incorrect use can add pressure around the carpal tunnel. A rest is not a treatment: avoid pressing your wrist into a hard edge, and do not use a support that makes your position or pressure feel worse. The guidance differs in emphasis: OSHA’s mouse setup advice and CCOHS’s mouse selection and use advice.

OSHA lists numbness or burning in the hand, reduced grip strength, swelling or stiffness, wrist or forearm pain, tingling, cramping and weakness among possible signs of musculoskeletal disorders. Those symptoms do not identify their cause, and a mouse adjustment cannot rule out a medical problem. The cited ergonomic guidance does not provide symptom-specific triage or an individual treatment plan. See OSHA’s work-process and symptom-recognition guidance.
