How to Fix WordPress Not Letting You Upload Media Files

A practical, error-by-error guide to WordPress media upload failures, including HTTP errors, unsupported images, PHP limits, permissions, image libraries, browser conflicts, and post-migration 404s.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most WordPress media-upload errors have a narrow cause: the file is unsupported or damaged, PHP rejects the request size, WordPress cannot write to wp-content/uploads, an image library fails while processing the file, or the server returns an unexpected response. Start by identifying the exact message and checking whether the file actually arrived. Then use Tools → Site Health → Info to compare the file with the server’s effective upload limit, image-library support, and directory writability.

This order matters. Retrying a file that already uploaded can create duplicates, while changing permissions or PHP settings without evidence can create a security or availability problem.

First, check whether WordPress uploaded the file anyway

Before changing anything, open Media → Library in a new tab or reload the library. An upload can complete even when the browser reports an error. This is especially common with the message “Unexpected response from the server.” If the image is present, do not submit it repeatedly; inspect the attachment and its URL instead.

Write down the exact wording, the filename, the extension, the file size, and the time of the failure. “This file cannot be processed by the web server,” “Unexpected response from the server,” and “The server cannot process the image” point to different investigation paths. A precise error is more useful to a host or developer than a screenshot saying only that an upload failed.

Match the message to the most likely cause

Message or symptom What it commonly indicates First action
This file cannot be processed by the web server. An unsupported file type or a file that is corrupt or malformed. Convert a copy to a small, standard JPEG or PNG and test that file.
Unexpected response from the server. The request received an invalid or incomplete response; the upload may still have succeeded. Reload Media → Library before retrying, then inspect the browser or server request error.
The server cannot process the image. A temporary processing failure, an image-library problem, or a server resource/limit issue. Wait briefly, retry once with a smaller known-good image, then inspect Site Health.
Upload stalls, reaches a limit, or never starts. A request-size limit, disabled PHP file uploads, timeout, or browser/network interference. Compare the file size with Site Health’s maximum effective file size and test privately in another browser.
The file appears after migration but its URL is 404, or the site shows a white screen. Rewrite rules, Apache mod_rewrite, a wrong uploads path, or migration-related configuration. Save the existing permalink structure, then have the host check rewrite support and .htaccess.

The message is a starting point, not a diagnosis. For example, an image below WordPress’s displayed limit can still exceed the smaller PHP limit, and a successful upload can still produce an unusable URL after a migration.

Use a known-good file to separate format problems from server problems

Test with a small standard image

The Block Editor documentation identifies JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, and HEIC as supported client-side image formats. Support can still vary by the server’s image-processing libraries and by the way a particular file was encoded. A camera or editing application may create a file with unusual metadata, an incomplete transfer, or a damaged data stream even when its extension looks normal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Make a copy of the failing image so the original is preserved.
  2. Open the copy in an image editor or operating-system preview and export it as a standard JPEG or PNG.
  3. Use a modest pixel dimension and file size for the test; do not begin with a batch upload.
  4. Upload only that one file and note whether it appears in Media → Library.

If the converted test succeeds while the original fails, the original is the likely problem. Re-export it, remove unnecessary metadata, or use another supported format. If even a small JPEG or PNG fails, stop changing the file and move to server, permissions, browser, or plugin checks.

Do not infer support from the filename alone

Renaming photo.tif to photo.jpg does not convert its contents. WordPress and PHP inspect the actual data. A file with a misleading extension, a truncated upload, or a malformed header can trigger an image-transcoding error. Test a genuinely exported file rather than changing only the suffix.

Inspect the upload limits and image libraries in Site Health

Before editing configuration files, open Tools → Site Health → Info. Record the values shown there. Site Health exposes the settings and capabilities that most often explain a media failure:

  • file_uploads: whether PHP permits HTTP file uploads at all.
  • Maximum post size: the largest total request body PHP accepts.
  • Maximum upload file size: the largest individual file PHP accepts.
  • Maximum effective file size: the smaller of the maximum post-data size and maximum upload-file size.
  • Maximum files per request: how many files one request may contain.
  • GD and Imagick versions and supported formats: the libraries WordPress can use to read, resize, and generate image derivatives.
  • Whether the WordPress, wp-content, and uploads directories are writable.

WordPress.org’s 2026 Site Health documentation describes the maximum effective file size as a calculated configuration value, not a universal recommendation. A file can be smaller than the number shown in the media interface yet be rejected when PHP’s smaller post_max_size or upload_max_filesize value applies. The total request also includes form data, so a request containing several files can fail even when each file individually fits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret the values without guessing

Observation Meaning Next move
file_uploads is disabled PHP will not accept normal file-upload requests. Ask the hosting provider to enable it for the site’s PHP runtime.
The effective size is smaller than the file PHP is rejecting the request before WordPress can process it. Provide the two underlying limits and the failing file size to the host; request a suitable change.
The effective size is larger, but a small test still fails The limit is probably not the primary cause. Check format integrity, writability, image libraries, browser interference, and server responses.
GD or Imagick is absent or lacks the needed format WordPress may receive the file but fail while creating image metadata or derivatives. Ask the host which library and formats are enabled; do not assume installing an extension is possible from WordPress.
A directory is not writable The web process cannot create the uploaded file or generated sizes. Correct ownership and targeted permissions with host guidance.

Capture these values before contacting support. Include the exact error, filename, size, file type, whether the item appears after reloading the library, and the approximate time. That lets support correlate the request with PHP or web-server logs.

Correct uploads permissions without opening the whole site

WordPress documentation notes that media uploads may require correct permissions on wp-content. The practical issue is not a magic number; it is whether the web-server process owns the directory or belongs to the group allowed to write it, while other users remain unable to alter executable files.

Use the least-privilege repair

  1. Identify the site’s actual uploads directory, normally under wp-content/uploads, and confirm that the path shown by WordPress matches the directory on disk.
  2. Ask the host which operating-system user and group run PHP for this site. Shared, containerized, and managed environments can use different accounts.
  3. Have the owner or host correct ownership/group on the uploads directory and apply the provider’s narrowly scoped writable setting.
  4. Test one small image, then verify that WordPress can create the expected attachment and image sizes.
  5. Remove any temporary access or diagnostic changes after the test.

Do not recursively make the entire WordPress installation world-writable. WordPress Developer Resources warns that a 777 directory or file can let an attacker upload malicious content or modify executable code, potentially exposing the site and database. A broad permission change may appear to fix an upload while creating a much larger compromise. If you cannot determine the correct owner or group, stop and ask the hosting provider rather than experimenting on production.

When permissions look correct but uploads still fail

Check both the directory and its parent paths. The web process may be able to create a file but not traverse a parent directory, or it may write the original while failing to create resized derivatives. Site Health’s separate checks for the WordPress, wp-content, and uploads directories help distinguish these cases. Also consider disk quota or a read-only filesystem; those conditions are server-level issues and require host assistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check PHP limits, temporary storage, and processing capacity

WordPress’s own limit display does not replace PHP’s configuration. The smaller of post_max_size and upload_max_filesize controls the effective request size reported by Site Health. A request can therefore fail before WordPress sees the file. Multiple files increase the total request body, and a large image can require additional temporary space and memory while GD or Imagick decodes and resizes it.

What to give your host

  • The exact error text, including capitalization.
  • The file’s actual extension and size, plus whether a small JPEG or PNG succeeds.
  • The Site Health values for file_uploads, maximum post size, maximum upload size, effective size, and maximum files per request.
  • The GD and Imagick versions and listed formats.
  • Whether WordPress reports the relevant directories as writable.
  • Whether the problem began after a PHP change, migration, plugin update, or host move.

Ask whether PHP limits, temporary-upload storage, disk quota, image extensions, or filesystem ownership are controlled centrally. A host may need to change the PHP pool configuration or repair ownership; an administrator account inside WordPress cannot safely override those settings.

Recognize a processing failure

If the original file appears in the library but WordPress cannot generate thumbnails, the upload stage may have succeeded and image processing failed afterward. A missing GD/Imagick format, insufficient temporary storage, or a damaged image can produce this pattern. Test the exported JPEG or PNG first, then use the Site Health library information to determine whether the server supports the format.

Rule out browser, plugin, theme, and endpoint interference

The browser begins an upload through WordPress’s administration or REST handlers, and the server must return a valid response. An extension, stale cache, security filter, or plugin can interfere after the browser has sent the file. A generic HTTP error does not identify which layer failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a controlled browser test

  1. Open a private or incognito window in the same browser and sign in.
  2. Upload the same known-good, small file.
  3. If it fails, try a second browser or a different network only if practical.
  4. Compare whether the file appears after reloading Media → Library.
  5. Record the browser’s exact request error from its developer tools or the visible error text; do not paste sensitive tokens or cookies into a public report.

If the private-window or second-browser test works, clear the original browser’s cache and disable extensions one at a time, starting with content blockers, privacy tools, and upload-related add-ons. If every browser fails, browser state is less likely to be the root cause.

Isolate plugins and themes safely

Use a staging copy or a maintenance-safe troubleshooting workflow whenever possible. Temporarily switch to a standard theme and deactivate plugins in a controlled sequence, then test one upload after each change. Security, optimization, media-management, and firewall plugins can alter REST or administration responses, reject MIME types, or impose their own request limits. Record the failing endpoint and response before changing production settings so the responsible plugin can be identified and reconfigured rather than left disabled indefinitely.

Do not disable security controls on a public site without a rollback plan. If a plugin conflict is confirmed, update it, adjust its upload or MIME rules, or ask its maintainer for a fix; restore unrelated plugins immediately after each test.

Repair uploads after a migration

A migration can leave two separate problems: the files may be present on disk but unreachable at their URLs, or rewrite rules may be wrong and cause a 404 or white screen. Do not assume that copying files again will repair a URL problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Flush the permalink rules

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Settings → Permalinks.
  2. Leave the existing permalink structure selected.
  3. Click Save Changes. Saving flushes the rewrite rules without requiring a new structure.
  4. Open an affected media URL in a private window and test a new upload.

If the URL still returns 404 or the upload produces a white screen, ask the host to verify that Apache’s mod_rewrite is enabled and that WordPress generated the expected .htaccess rules in the document root. A host should also verify the migrated uploads path, filesystem ownership, and the site’s URL and home settings. Avoid hand-editing rewrite rules until the server configuration and backup are confirmed.

Distinguish missing files from rewrite failures

A 404 with a file that is absent from the uploads directory is a file-transfer or path problem. A 404 where the file exists is more consistent with rewrite, virtual-host, or permissions behavior. A white screen can indicate a fatal PHP error during the request; obtain the server or PHP log through the host and keep public error display disabled after diagnosis.

Use logging and escalation safely

Logs can reveal the rejected request, PHP limit, missing extension, permission denial, or fatal error that the browser hides. Enable diagnostic logging only through a documented, reversible method and protect the log from public access. Debug output can contain filenames, paths, usernames, request data, or other sensitive information. Once the cause is identified, disable public display and remove temporary diagnostic changes.

Contact a managed WordPress support team or your hosting provider when:

  • file_uploads, PHP size limits, GD/Imagick, temporary storage, or ownership are host-controlled.
  • Site Health reports a non-writable directory and you cannot identify the correct web-process account.
  • Uploads work in one environment but fail after a migration or PHP-version change.
  • Permalinks, mod_rewrite, or .htaccess need server-level verification.
  • The server returns a 5xx response, times out, or shows a white screen.

Support can act faster when you provide the exact message, one reproducible filename and size, the result of the known-good JPEG/PNG test, Site Health values, the time of failure, and whether reloading the Media Library showed a successful upload.

A compact decision path

  1. Reload Media → Library. If the item is present, investigate the response or generated image sizes instead of uploading again.
  2. Test one small, genuinely exported JPEG or PNG. If it works, repair or convert the original format; if it fails, continue.
  3. Open Tools → Site Health → Info. Check file_uploads, effective size, maximum files per request, GD/Imagick, and directory writability.
  4. Compare limits. If the file exceeds the effective value, ask the host to adjust PHP configuration; do not guess at settings.
  5. Repair permissions narrowly. Correct uploads ownership/group and provider-approved permissions; never use 777 as a blanket fix.
  6. Test privately and isolate conflicts. Compare another browser, then use staging or a safe troubleshooting workflow for plugins and themes.
  7. For post-migration failures, flush permalinks. Save the existing structure, then have the host check mod_rewrite, .htaccess, paths, and ownership.
  8. Escalate with evidence. Send the exact error and Site Health record to the host or technical support provider.
