Fix a broken WordPress homepage in this order: identify whether the site uses a block or classic theme, find the page or template that actually renders at the homepage URL, inspect its template parts and Styles, clear every relevant cache, and only then add narrowly scoped CSS. If the editor looks right but the published page does not, treat it as a loading, caching, or override problem rather than immediately rebuilding the page.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
The steps below cover unstyled pages, incorrect spacing, missing sections, blank homepages, changes that appear only in the editor, and “Invalid Content” errors in homepage blocks.

Start by identifying what WordPress is actually rendering
The editing route depends on the theme architecture. A block theme uses the Site Editor to assemble templates and template parts. A classic theme normally renders a page selected in the Reading settings, although its PHP templates can still control the surrounding layout.
Check for a block theme
- Open the WordPress dashboard.
- Look for Appearance > Editor. If it exists, the active theme supports full-site editing.
- In the Site Editor, open Templates and locate the template assigned to the homepage. Depending on the theme and URL, it may be the front page, home, or another custom template.
- Open Patterns or Template parts to inspect shared headers, footers, navigation, and other reusable sections.
With a block theme, the homepage may be assembled by a template and therefore may not appear as a normal page under Pages. Editing a page’s content will not correct a problem that originates in the template.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check a classic theme
- Go to Settings > Reading.
- Note whether the site displays the latest posts or a static page.
- If it uses a static page, record the selected Homepage and, where applicable, the Posts page.
- Open that page under Pages and check its page template in the page settings.
If the site displays the latest posts, the front page is generated by the theme’s front-page or home template rather than by a normal page editor. A page-level CSS fix may not affect that output.
Reproduce the error as a visitor before changing anything
Editors and logged-in administrators can see cached or privileged versions of a page. Open the published homepage in a private window or while logged out, then perform a hard refresh. Compare three views: the editor, the logged-out page, and the page after a fresh reload.

- Clear the browser cache for the site.
- Purge any page cache, object cache, CDN cache, or host cache used by the installation.
- Confirm that the editor or Site Editor reported a completed save, not merely a local preview.
- Test on a second browser or device if only one browser shows the defect.
WordPress.com support describes the reason plainly: clearing a cache forces the browser to load the current version. The same principle applies to reverse proxies and optimization plugins. Do not judge a CSS change until the public response has been purged and reloaded.
Match the symptom to the likely layer
| What you see | First place to inspect | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The wrong sections, header, or footer appear | Block-theme template and template parts, or the classic theme’s page template | The structure is being generated outside the page content. |
| Fonts, colors, widths, or spacing are globally wrong | Styles or the theme’s global settings | A site-wide value can affect every page and block. |
| A rule works in the editor but not on the live page | Cache, stylesheet loading, selector scope, or CSS specificity | The two contexts may load different assets or receive different overrides. |
| The live page is unstyled or shows a blank layout | Failed CSS requests, optimization settings, PHP errors, or a conflicting plugin | The browser may be receiving incomplete markup or no stylesheet. |
| One block says “Unexpected or Invalid Content” | Block recovery, unsupported markup, and plugin/theme conflicts | The saved block comment and the rendered markup no longer agree. |
| Only the homepage is wrong | Homepage-specific template, page class, or conditional enqueue | A global rule may be fine while a front-page rule is malformed. |
Repair a block-theme homepage in the Site Editor
Inspect the template hierarchy
- Open Appearance > Editor > Templates.
- Select the template that the homepage uses and open it in the editor.
- Use List View to find the outer groups, columns, rows, query loops, navigation, and spacer blocks.
- Open each template part that contributes to the visible problem, especially the header and footer.
- Save the template and any changed template part separately when WordPress presents separate save controls.
A template-level error repeats on every page that uses that template. If the same header or content width is wrong across several pages, fix the template part or global Styles instead of adding a homepage-only selector.
Use Styles before custom CSS
Open Appearance > Editor > Styles. Depending on the WordPress version and theme, use the global settings for:
- Typography, including font family, size, line height, and letter spacing.
- Colors for text, links, backgrounds, and borders.
- Layout values such as content width, wide width, and block spacing.
- Spacing values for padding and margins where the theme exposes them.
- Block-specific defaults, such as heading, button, image, or navigation appearance.
WordPress recommends starting with the controls in Styles before adding custom CSS. This keeps the value in the theme’s design system and makes its scope visible. A change in Styles can affect posts, pages, and templates, so check the preview and scope before saving.

Undo an experimental global change
If the homepage broke after several Style changes, open the Styles options menu (the three-dot menu) and use the available reset option. Resetting is preferable to layering more overrides on top of an unknown value. Reapply only the values you can identify as necessary.
Find the Additional CSS control in current WordPress
In WordPress 6.2, Additional CSS was added to the site-wide Styles interface for block themes. In WordPress 6.9 documentation, the control is accessed from the ellipsis menu in the Styles header rather than always appearing as a visible button. The exact placement can vary with the active theme and WordPress version.
Fix a classic-theme homepage
Correct the assigned page
For a static homepage, return to Settings > Reading and verify the selected page. Open that page and check its template selector. A theme may offer a full-width, boxed, landing-page, or no-sidebar template; choosing the wrong one can make a correct page appear misaligned.
Separate page content from theme chrome
The editor controls the content between the theme’s content boundaries. Header, footer, sidebar, wrapper width, and many responsive rules are supplied by the theme’s PHP templates and stylesheet. If the page content is correct but the logo, navigation, or outer margins are wrong, inspect the theme customizer, template files, or stylesheet rather than inserting markup into the page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a page-specific selector carefully
Classic themes commonly add a body class for the front page. Inspect the rendered HTML in developer tools and confirm the class before writing a selector. A typical pattern is:
.home .hero-section {
max-width: 72rem;
margin-inline: auto;
padding-inline: 1.25rem;
}
Do not assume that .home or .front-page exists in every theme. Copy the actual class from the page’s body element, and verify that your selector does not unintentionally style inner pages.

Add CSS in the narrowest useful scope
Choose global, block-type, or one-element scope
| Scope | Use it when | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Global Additional CSS | A deliberate rule should affect the entire site or all instances of a component | It can change posts, pages, templates, and future content. |
| Per-block Additional CSS | Every block of a specific type needs the same adjustment | It may affect blocks outside the homepage. |
| Homepage or element selector | Only one template or component is wrong | The selector can break when a theme changes its markup. |
For a single block, assign a distinctive class in the block’s Advanced settings and target that class. Prefer a stable class over a long chain of generated classes.
Use the correct per-block syntax
Per-block Additional CSS generally expects property/value declarations rather than a complete rule. For example:
margin-top: 0;
max-width: 70rem;
Use braces only when the field explicitly supports a selector, pseudo-state, or more complex rule. A declaration copied into a selector-based field, or a selector pasted into a declaration-only field, will be ignored or produce invalid CSS.
Keep a recoverable copy
Additional CSS is tied to the active theme and is cleared when switching themes. Keep the CSS in a version-controlled stylesheet, a documented change log, or another secure copy before changing themes or performing a redesign. This also gives you a rollback point when several experiments overlap.
When the editor and live homepage disagree
Confirm the rule is present
- Open the live homepage in developer tools.
- In the Network panel, filter for CSS and reload the page.
- Look for failed requests, unexpected redirects, incorrect paths, and stylesheets blocked by a media condition.
- In the Elements or Styles panel, select the affected element and search for your declaration.
- Check whether the declaration is crossed out because a later rule, a more specific selector, or an inline style wins.
If the stylesheet request fails, fix the enqueue path or server response before changing selectors. If the declaration appears but is overridden, adjust scope or specificity sparingly; do not reach for !important until you have identified the competing rule.
Load front-end and editor assets in the right context
WordPress distinguishes between assets for the editor interface and assets used by block content. Use enqueue_block_editor_assets for editor UI assets. For CSS or JavaScript that must accompany block content, use enqueue_block_assets. Since WordPress 6.3, enqueue_block_assets also loads in the iframed editor, which helps keep block content styling consistent between editing and viewing.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For ordinary theme or plugin stylesheets, register and enqueue them with wp_enqueue_style. Its version parameter adds a query string that helps browsers and caching layers recognize a changed file:
wp_enqueue_style(
'site-home',
get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/assets/home.css',
array(),
'2026-10-15'
);
Use a meaningful version that changes when the file changes. A version string does not repair a wrong path, a 404 response, or a rule that is overridden later; it only helps invalidate stale copies.
Check optimization and concatenation settings
CSS minification, combining, delaying, or removing “unused” CSS can alter order and scope. Temporarily disable one optimization feature at a time in a staging or controlled maintenance window, purge its generated files, and retest. Re-enable features individually after identifying the one that changes the result.

Use Attempt Block Recovery first
- Open the page or template containing the warning.
- Open the affected block’s options menu.
- Choose Attempt Block Recovery.
- Review the proposed content before accepting it.
- Save only after confirming that text, links, images, and nested blocks are intact.
An invalid-block warning means the saved block representation and the markup WordPress expects no longer match. It is not a signal to paste arbitrary CSS, JavaScript, or PHP into that block.

Use the block’s supported settings for styling. Put CSS in Additional CSS or a properly enqueued stylesheet. Put JavaScript in an appropriate script enqueue or a block that explicitly supports it. PHP belongs in theme or plugin code, not in post content. Unsupported inline code can trigger validation errors, security filtering, or a mismatch after a plugin update.
Isolate a theme or plugin conflict
- Work on staging or use a maintenance procedure with a current backup.
- Record the exact block, URL, WordPress version, theme version, and active plugins.
- Temporarily switch to a standard, compatible theme if the problem appears theme-related.
- Deactivate plugins and test the block again.
- Re-enable plugins systematically, testing after each change until the error returns.
WordPress documentation notes that a theme or plugin can interfere with the editor. Re-enable components in a controlled sequence so you can identify the conflicting component instead of leaving the site with an unexplained collection of disabled features.

Choose between a template fix and a page-content fix
| Question | If yes | Preferred repair |
|---|---|---|
| Does the same defect appear on several pages using the same layout? | The shared structure is likely responsible | Change the template, template part, or global Styles. |
| Is only one page’s text, image, or local spacing wrong? | The defect is isolated to content | Edit that page or its block settings. |
| Does the editor show the fix but the visitor does not? | The content is probably saved but not delivered as expected | Purge caches and inspect CSS requests, media conditions, and overrides. |
| Does the issue appear only at one breakpoint? | A responsive rule or hidden/stacked setting is involved | Inspect computed styles at that viewport and adjust the breakpoint rule. |
| Does the homepage fail only when a plugin is active? | A conflict is likely | Document and isolate the plugin on staging before changing production code. |
Responsive layout checks that prevent false fixes
Test the homepage at the widths your visitors use, not only at the desktop width shown in the editor. In developer tools, inspect the element’s computed width, padding, display mode, flex or grid settings, and overflow. A horizontal scrollbar often comes from a child element wider than its container, a fixed-width image, or a long unbroken string.
- Check whether a Group, Row, or Column block has a fixed width that exceeds the content area.
- Verify that images have an appropriate size setting and are not forcing overflow.
- Inspect mobile stacking and row-to-column behavior for columns and navigation.
- Look for negative margins or duplicated padding introduced by both a parent and child block.
- Confirm that hidden blocks are not still reserving space through custom CSS.
Change one property at a time, save, purge caches, and test both the affected width and a nearby width. A fix that works only at one exact viewport is usually an overfit selector or breakpoint.
Reset and rollback strategy
- Copy the current Additional CSS and note the last known-good version.
- Revert the smallest recent change first.
- Reset Styles if a global experiment changed many unrelated components.
- Restore the affected template or template part from a known-good revision when available.
- Clear browser, plugin, CDN, and host caches after the rollback.
- Test logged out before declaring the homepage fixed.
Avoid deleting the entire page or template as a first response. Destructive rebuilding removes clues and can make recovery harder, especially when the real cause is a stale cache or an asset that never loaded.
Version and capability notes
- The documented block-theme Styles interface requires WordPress 5.9 or newer.
- WordPress 6.2 added site-wide Additional CSS in Styles for block themes.
- WordPress 6.3 made
enqueue_block_assetsload in the iframed Editor for block content. - WordPress 6.9 documentation places Additional CSS controls in the Styles header’s ellipsis menu.
Labels can vary by theme and WordPress release. If a control is missing, first confirm the active theme type and WordPress version rather than assuming the feature was removed.
A maintenance checklist for future homepage changes
- Record whether the site uses a block or classic theme.
- Write down the homepage URL, assigned page or template, and relevant template parts.
- Make global design changes in Styles before writing CSS.
- Give one-off components a stable custom class.
- Keep Additional CSS and enqueued stylesheet changes in a recoverable record.
- Test logged out and purge all relevant caches after publishing.
- Inspect network requests when a rule is missing rather than repeatedly increasing specificity.
- Use staging and a backup before deactivating plugins or changing theme code.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my WordPress homepage look correct in the editor but not on the live site?
The live visitor may be receiving a cached page or an old stylesheet. Test while logged out, purge browser, page, object, CDN, and host caches, confirm the Site Editor save completed, and inspect the browser’s CSS network requests for failures or a later rule overriding your declaration.
Where should I put CSS for a block-theme homepage?
Use Appearance > Editor > Styles for typography, colors, widths, spacing, and block defaults. Use Additional CSS only for a gap that the visual controls cannot express, and scope the selector to the affected block or homepage component.

If the same layout defect appears on multiple pages, inspect the shared template or template part. If only one page’s content is wrong, edit that page or its block settings. In a block theme, the homepage may be entirely template-based and may not be listed as a normal page.
What should I do when WordPress says a homepage block has invalid content?
Choose Attempt Block Recovery, review the proposed result, and remove unsupported CSS, JavaScript, or PHP from the block. If the warning persists, test for a theme or plugin conflict in staging and re-enable components systematically.
Why did my custom CSS disappear after changing themes?
Additional CSS belongs to the active theme and is cleared when switching themes. Keep a copy in version control or a documented change log, then reapply only the rules still needed by the new theme.
