If Word cannot save a PDF or the PDF comes out blank, first check which route you used: Word’s built-in PDF export or Print to a PDF printer. The fixes differ. Start with Word’s export options, check the destination, and use printer troubleshooting only when the print route is failing. Microsoft’s guidance does not identify one universal fix for every blank PDF.
First identify how you created the PDF
In Word, a PDF can be created through the built-in PDF/XPS export workflow or by printing to a PDF printer. Note which command you used, where you saved the file, and whether the PDF exists and has a nonzero file size. Also note your Word version and operating system: Microsoft’s documented SharePoint issue, for example, applies to a specific Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows scenario.

Try Word’s built-in PDF export
Use Word’s own PDF/XPS conversion before assuming you need another tool. In the PDF save or publish dialog, open Options and check the page selection and whether markup is included. If the PDF is missing particular pages or expected markup, correct those settings and create it again. These options can explain omissions, but Microsoft does not describe them as a universal remedy for a completely blank PDF.

If Word for Windows is saving to SharePoint Online
Check whether your symptoms match a specific issue Microsoft documented for Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows after version 2609 (16.0.20430.x). When Save As PDF targeted SharePoint Online, Word could show no error but put a randomly named file in C:UsersusernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCacheContent.MSO instead of saving it to the intended SharePoint location.
Microsoft says the service fix was fully rolled out on September 25, 2026. If you are still affected, close all open Office apps and reopen Word, as Microsoft recommends in its known-issue notice. This documented case concerns saving to SharePoint Online; it does not explain blank PDFs saved to other locations.

If you used Print to PDF, troubleshoot printing
When the failure happens through File > Print, check the selected output device and the print settings rather than treating it as a failure of Word’s native PDF export.
- Confirm the intended PDF printer is selected.
- Check the page range, paper size, and layout settings.
- Try printing a different Word document, then try printing from another app. This helps distinguish a document-specific problem from a wider app or printing problem.
- If printing fails in other apps too, check Windows printer connectivity and drivers. For Office-related printing problems, Microsoft also recommends repairing Office. See Microsoft’s print troubleshooting steps.
These are general print-path checks; they do not establish a fix for a blank PDF created with Word’s built-in export.

Update Word, then gather details if it still fails
Microsoft’s general Word troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for current Office and Windows updates before moving on to deeper troubleshooting. Those details help separate an export problem from a printing, destination, document, or version-specific issue. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish a single verified fix for every case in which Word creates a blank PDF.
