If your WireGuard tunnel connects but you cannot reach devices on the remote LAN, check whether your home and remote networks use the same IP range. Your device cannot tell which network owns an address that exists on both sides. The cleanest fix is to renumber one LAN; if that is not practical, a gateway can translate one network to a distinct alias range, with the required NAT, firewall, and return-route configuration.
Why a WireGuard tunnel can connect while the remote LAN stays unreachable
WireGuard can establish a handshake between peers without making every network behind them reachable. When the local and remote LANs use identical or overlapping ranges, the client may send traffic for a remote address onto its local network instead. If a local and remote device have the exact same IP address, a route alone cannot tell the client which physical device you mean.

WireGuard’s AllowedIPs has two roles: it helps select a peer for outgoing traffic and checks source addresses on incoming traffic. The WireGuard project describes the list as acting like a routing table for sent packets and an access-control list for received packets: WireGuard: Cryptokey Routing. It does not make duplicate destination addresses unique.
Choose the fix that fits your network
| Option | Use it when | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Renumber one LAN | You administer at least one network and can change its subnet. | Usually the cleanest long-term routing design. Update DHCP, static addresses, reservations, firewall rules, DNS records, routes, and any WireGuard AllowedIPs that refer to the old prefix. |
| Translate one LAN to an alias range | Renumbering is impractical and a gateway can apply NAT to WireGuard traffic. | Use a unique translated range and configure the translation, firewall policy, and return path. NAT can interfere with protocols that carry addresses internally or expect end-to-end addressing. |
| Route selected remote hosts | The needed remote destinations do not also exist locally, or platform-specific routing policy makes the path unambiguous. | Use specific peer prefixes and operating-system routes where appropriate, then confirm which interface the route lookup selects. A /32 cannot distinguish two devices that share the same IP address. |
| Use a jump host, proxy, or application relay | You need only a few services and cannot redesign the networks. | This can avoid direct access to the colliding destination range, but the right approach depends on the service; there is no universal WireGuard setting for it. |
Renumber one LAN for the simplest lasting fix
Give the two routed LANs distinct, non-overlapping prefixes. Ubuntu’s WireGuard site-to-site example uses separate site networks and a separate range for the tunnel addresses; it says its example applies no NAT to tunnel traffic, so the site networks must be different and non-overlapping: Ubuntu Server: WireGuard VPN site-to-site.

After choosing the new prefix, update the services and devices that still refer to the old one. That commonly includes the DHCP pool, manually assigned addresses, reservations, firewall rules, DNS records, and routes. Update each WireGuard peer’s AllowedIPs to match the networks that peer should route or accept. Do not assume changing AllowedIPs alone resolves a LAN collision: the destination address still needs to identify one reachable host.
Use NAT when renumbering is not practical
A gateway can present one LAN to the other side through a distinct alias range. The remote side routes that alias range through the tunnel, while the gateway translates traffic to the real LAN addresses. This makes the destination range unique from the remote client’s perspective, but it adds translation and firewall policy that must be correct in both directions.

Netgate documents NAT options on assigned pfSense WireGuard interfaces and explains the need for rules that permit tunneled traffic: Netgate pfSense: WireGuard and Rules / NAT. Its detailed example for connecting sites with conflicting subnets is specifically an OpenVPN example, not a WireGuard recipe; it is useful only as an illustration of alias-range translation and its protocol trade-offs: Netgate pfSense: Connecting OpenVPN Sites with Conflicting IP Subnets. Check the documentation for your gateway before applying NAT rules.

- Write down the ranges. Record the client’s LAN prefix, remote LAN prefix, destination host address, and WireGuard tunnel addresses. Check whether the LAN ranges overlap or are identical.
- Look up the destination route with the tunnel active. Use your operating system’s route-table or route-lookup tool for the remote host address. Confirm the selected interface and next hop match your intended design. A route lookup can reveal that the client is sending the packet locally instead of through WireGuard.
- Check both peers’ WireGuard configuration. Confirm that the client peer’s
AllowedIPscovers the intended remote network or hosts, and that the other peer’s configuration authorizes the expected source addresses. The exact route installation behavior depends on the client and platform. - Verify routes beyond the tunnel. Some tools install routes automatically; other setups require them separately. Ubuntu’s site-to-site example adds a route for the remote network, while Netgate notes that routes beyond the tunnel network must be configured separately in its pfSense guidance: Netgate pfSense: WireGuard Routing.
- Check forwarding and firewall policy. Make sure the WireGuard interface and gateways permit the traffic, and that the remote LAN host or gateway has a route back through the tunnel (or the intended NAT gateway). A working handshake confirms peer connectivity, not end-to-end LAN routing.
- Test an actual LAN host. From a remote client, try a reachable device behind the WireGuard gateway rather than testing only the gateway itself. Ubuntu’s peer-to-site guide recommends testing traffic to another host behind the WireGuard system: Ubuntu Server: WireGuard VPN peer-to-site (on router).
When a host-specific route helps—and when it cannot
If only a few remote systems are needed and their IP addresses do not collide with local devices, a host-specific route and matching peer configuration may avoid routing the entire remote LAN. Confirm the selected path with a route lookup after bringing up the tunnel. If the same destination IP is in use by a local and a remote host, a narrower route does not resolve the ambiguity; use a distinct address space through renumbering or translation, or access the service through a jump host or relay instead.
