What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First, identify which job the external drive is doing: a USB drive containing Windows Setup media is meant to boot the installer, while an external USB drive selected as the destination is meant to hold a running Windows installation. The fixes are different. Microsoft supports using USB media to install or recover Windows, but its former Windows To Go feature for running Windows from an external drive has been removed from Windows 10 version 2004 and later.
Which external-drive setup are you trying to use?
“Installing Windows to an external drive” can describe two different situations. Determine which one applies before changing firmware settings or partitions:
| Drive’s role | What it is for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| USB installation or recovery media | Boot Windows Setup or the Windows Recovery Environment, then install or repair Windows on a target device. | Microsoft documents creating installation media on a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating the media erases the drive’s contents. Microsoft’s Windows installation-media instructions explain the process. |
| External USB drive as the full Windows destination | Run a complete Windows workspace from the external drive. | Microsoft’s Windows To Go feature was removed in Windows 10 version 2004 and later. The former feature was limited to Windows 10 Enterprise and Education, required a specific type of USB drive, and did not support feature updates. Microsoft’s Windows To Go FAQ describes those limits. |
If you see the message “You can’t install Windows on a USB Flash Drive using Set-Up,” check whether you selected the USB drive as the installation destination. That message is not the same problem as Setup failing to boot from a USB installer. Changing the boot order or partition layout does not restore the discontinued Windows To Go feature or make that use officially supported.
Why won’t Windows Setup detect my external drive?
First distinguish between a USB installer that is not offered as a boot option and a target drive that is missing after Setup has started. Boot-media troubleshooting addresses the first problem, not necessarily the second.

If the USB installer or recovery media will not boot
- Check the media. If needed, create it again using Microsoft’s current Windows installation-media instructions. Use a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB available; media creation deletes its contents, so copy any files you need elsewhere first.
- Choose the USB drive from the startup boot menu. Shut down the PC, start it, and open its boot menu using the key specified by the manufacturer. The key and menu labels differ among models; consult the computer’s documentation. Microsoft’s USB boot guidance covers the general process.
- Check firmware settings. Confirm that USB boot is enabled in the computer’s firmware. If the USB drive does not appear, Microsoft also recommends connecting it directly to the computer rather than through a USB hub. The exact firmware menus and options are manufacturer-specific.
If the USB installer starts successfully but the external SSD or other target is absent from Setup, boot-menu changes have not solved target detection. The exact error, Windows version, computer model, storage controller and USB enclosure can affect what to investigate. Record the full message and device details before attempting model-specific changes; there is no universal fix established for every external SSD and USB-bridge combination.
How to protect your files before troubleshooting
Back up important files before installing or reinstalling Windows or changing disks and partitions. Microsoft warns that making installation media deletes the USB flash drive’s contents, and that a fresh install can erase the selected target disk. Confirm which drive is which before proceeding; do not delete partitions or run destructive disk commands unless you have positively identified the target and accepted the data loss.

Can I run Windows from an external USB drive?
Windows To Go was Microsoft’s feature for booting a full Windows workspace from a USB-connected external drive. Microsoft states that it was removed in Windows 10 version 2004 and later. It was a Windows 10 Enterprise and Education feature, needed a specific kind of USB drive, and did not support feature updates. Those historical details do not make a current external-drive installation supported.
Microsoft’s former Windows To Go FAQ says the feature was removed in version 2004 and later, and that it “doesn’t support feature updates and therefore doesn’t enable you to stay current.” Avoid treating registry changes, DiskPart commands, or third-party utilities as an official way to restore Windows To Go.

Which Windows version should you install?
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its support information says this includes the end of free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance and security fixes. If your PC meets the requirements, use Microsoft’s current Windows 11 installation guidance. Windows 10 installation material should be treated as legacy guidance, not as the default current choice.
