How to Fix “Windows Resource Protection Could Not Perform the Requested Operation”

Microsoft recommends running SFC in Safe Mode when it reports that Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

If sfc /scannow ends with “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation,” Microsoft’s direct recommendation is to run the System File Checker scan in Safe Mode. You can also use Microsoft’s general repair sequence—run DISM, then SFC—but the error message alone does not identify a specific cause or guarantee that any one step will fix it.

What the SFC error means

The scan did not complete as intended. This is different from the result “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations,” which Microsoft says means Windows found no missing or corrupted system files. The error message is a scan result, not a diagnosis of why the scan could not proceed.

Microsoft lists the exact operation error and recommends repeating the System File Checker scan in Safe Mode. Its broader repair guidance also uses DISM to repair the Windows image before running SFC. Both tools are built into Windows.

Run DISM, then SFC

Open Command Prompt or Terminal with administrator privileges, then run Microsoft’s repair commands in this order:

  1. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  2. sfc /scannow

Allow each command to finish. In particular, do not close the command window while SFC is running; wait for its final message before deciding whether the scan succeeded.

Microsoft’s instructions for these commands are in its System File Checker guidance.

Run SFC in Safe Mode if the error appears

For the exact result “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation,” Microsoft says: “To resolve this problem, perform the System File Checker scan in safe mode.” Start Windows in Safe Mode using the instructions for your Windows version and device, then run sfc /scannow from an administrator command prompt or terminal.

Safe Mode entry steps can vary by Windows version and device, so use Microsoft’s applicable startup instructions rather than assuming one navigation path works for every computer.

Check the final SFC message

Interpret the result only after the scan completes. Microsoft distinguishes among these outcomes:

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” Microsoft says this means there are no missing or corrupted system files.
  • Corrupted files were successfully repaired. SFC completed repairs; use the final message to confirm the outcome.
  • Some corrupted files could not be repaired. SFC completed, but the reported files were not all fixed.
  • “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.” The scan did not complete as intended; Microsoft recommends running it in Safe Mode.

If SFC still fails in Safe Mode

Microsoft’s cited guidance does not lay out a universal escalation sequence for a scan that continues to fail after the Safe Mode attempt. A community Q&A includes one person reporting the error after trying Safe Mode, DISM, and disk checks, but that account is anecdotal: it does not show how common the situation is or establish a general cause.

For a useful next step, gather the details a support technician needs:

  • Your Windows version and whether Windows starts normally.
  • The exact command you ran and the complete final output.
  • Whether the same error occurred in Safe Mode.
  • Any related servicing or disk errors you encountered.

Use version-appropriate Microsoft support for further troubleshooting. The error alone does not justify a specific permissions change, file replacement, update-data deletion, reinstall, paid utility, or hardware purchase.
