If a Windows 11 per-app GPU preference won’t stick, edit the target app on Settings > System > Display > Graphics, choose a graphics option, select Save, then restart the app or game. If it still reverts, reset that app’s custom graphics settings and try again. The preference is per app, so changing a system-wide option may not change the setting that is overriding it.
Set and save the graphics preference for the right app
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the target app under its custom options and open Options. For a desktop app, make sure the entry is for the executable that actually runs the app or game—not just its launcher.
- When more than one GPU is available, select Let Windows decide, Power saving, or High performance, then select Save. The GPUs shown and available choices depend on the device.
- Close Settings and restart the app or game before checking which GPU preference it is using.
These click-by-click instructions are documented for Windows 11; labels and layout can vary between Windows releases. Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions describe selecting the app’s option, saving it, and restarting the app.

Choose an option that fits the app
- Let Windows decide: Allow Windows to choose which GPU to use.
- Power saving: Choose the lower-power option when available, which may suit battery-conscious use.
- High performance: Choose the higher-performance GPU when available, which may suit a game or demanding app.
The exact GPUs associated with the choices depend on your PC; the labels do not guarantee the same hardware behavior on every device.

On the Graphics page, use Reset for the app’s custom settings, then reopen its options, choose the preferred setting, and select Save. Reset returns that app’s custom graphics settings to defaults; it is not a general Windows repair. Microsoft’s DirectX team also notes that app-specific settings can take precedence over system-wide graphics preferences, so check the affected app’s entry directly. When a display-driver rollback may be relevant
Consider investigating the display driver if the setting problem began after a Windows Update changed the display driver, or if you also have display symptoms such as flickering. Microsoft’s rollback guidance is for display troubleshooting; it does not establish that a driver change is the universal cause or fix for a GPU preference that will not save. Why registry edits are not the first step
The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not prescribe deleting a GPU-preference registry key as a general fix for this problem. Avoid registry edits unless a qualified technician has a specific reason to make one. If you do edit the registry, first export the relevant key or subkey and keep the backup; Microsoft documents importing a saved copy to restore it.
