If Windows Defender Quick Scan won’t start, appears stuck, or ends with an error, first confirm you’re launching it from Windows Security and check whether Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the active antivirus provider. Then restart and update Windows and Defender, and choose a Full, Custom, or Offline scan if you need another way to check the PC. These are Microsoft’s general steps for Windows 10 and Windows 11; the right next step depends on the message and the device’s security setup.

Start Quick scan from Windows Security

  1. Open Start, search for Windows Security, and open the app.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Quick scan and check whether it begins or displays an error.

Microsoft documents this as the Quick scan entry point in Windows 10 and Windows 11. If you only need to check one item, open it in File Explorer, right-click it, and select Scan with Microsoft Defender. In Windows 11, you may need to select Show more options first. Microsoft’s Windows Security guide describes these options.

Check which antivirus provider is active

Open Windows Security and review the antivirus provider or protection status shown under Virus & threat protection. A third-party antivirus or antimalware product can cause Microsoft Defender Antivirus to enter disabled mode automatically. Microsoft says Defender should return to active mode automatically after that product is uninstalled.

That does not mean another antivirus is malfunctioning or should always be removed. If the PC belongs to an employer or school, or is managed by an administrator, check with them before changing its security software. Microsoft explains provider status and the effect of non-Microsoft antivirus in its guide to scanning an item with Windows Security.

If Microsoft Defender scan is stuck, restart and retry

A scan that takes a long time or seems not to finish is different from a Quick scan that never launches. For slow or incomplete scans, Microsoft recommends letting the PC sit idle, closing applications you do not need, checking that there is enough free disk space, and restarting before trying again. These are sensible first checks, not a guaranteed repair for every launch failure.

  1. Save your work and restart the PC.
  2. Before opening other apps, open Windows Security and try Quick scan again.
  3. If it runs slowly, close unnecessary applications and leave the PC idle while it works.
  4. Check available disk space if the scan still does not complete.

These steps come from Microsoft’s malware detection and removal troubleshooting guidance, which addresses slow or incomplete scans and malware removal.

Install Windows and Defender protection updates

If Defender repeatedly errors during scans or malware removal, Microsoft recommends installing Windows updates. Use Settings > Windows Update to check for and install available updates, then restart if prompted and retry the scan. If Defender continues to show errors while updating its protection, Microsoft advises installing the latest protection updates manually. The exact update and error depend on the device, so use the instructions applicable to the displayed message rather than relying on an old definition-version number.

Choose another scan type when Quick scan is unavailable

Windows Security offers other built-in ways to scan. Choose according to what you need to check; no scan type is guaranteed to find every threat.

Scan type What it checks Restart required? Best suited to
Quick scan A quick check of common locations where threats may be found. No A routine, shorter check.
Full scan Every file and program on the device. No A more thorough check when you can allow more time.
Custom scan Files and folders you select. No Checking a specific location or set of items.
Microsoft Defender Offline Scans outside the fully loaded Windows environment, in Windows Recovery Environment. Yes. The PC restarts to run the scan and restarts automatically afterward. When you suspect persistent malware or want to scan without Windows fully loaded.

To select a scan, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, choose the scan type, and start it. Save open work before running Microsoft Defender Offline because the PC will restart. After it returns to Windows, check Protection history for the result. Microsoft describes the scan types and Offline scan behavior in its Virus & threat protection guide.

When Defender scan failed repeatedly

Note the exact error message or code, when it appears, and whether Windows Security shows Microsoft Defender Antivirus as the active provider. If the problem remains after the relevant update and restart checks, use Feedback Hub or Microsoft support guidance with those details. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting advice recommends submitting feedback, but it does not identify a universal cause or repair for every Quick scan error. Avoid unverified registry edits, service resets, or disabling security features.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft’s scan instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A PC still running Windows 10 therefore has a current security-support concern; moving to a supported Windows version is a separate security decision, not an established fix for a Quick scan launch problem. Microsoft’s Windows security troubleshooting page notes the end of Windows 10 support.
