If a Windows 11 update is pending, stuck at 0% or 100%, or fails with an error code, start with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Restart when it finishes, then check for updates again. If the update still will not install, use the symptom or error code to choose a targeted next step rather than repeating the same generic fixes.
Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends running its automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app on Windows 11. Follow the prompts, restart the PC after the troubleshooter completes, and check for updates again. Get Help reports what it found and may suggest remedies.

If you need the troubleshooter through Settings, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Follow the on-screen instructions, restart, and try Windows Update again. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance covers these routes.
What to do when an update looks stuck
A percentage that has not changed does not, by itself, identify a failure or its cause. Microsoft says update time varies with connection speed, network settings, and update size; its guidance does not set a universal wait time. Before treating a pending update as failed, check the connection and available disk space, restart the PC, and check for updates again. Run the troubleshooter if it still will not proceed.

Stuck at 0% or 100%
Microsoft’s troubleshooting article has a specific section for “Windows Update stuck at 0% or 100%.” Start with the troubleshooter, connection, restart, and storage checks above, then follow the steps in Microsoft’s guidance for this symptom.
Stuck at 51–99%
Microsoft also addresses updates that reach 51–99% but do not complete installation. Use the same basic checks, then select the section matching this symptom in the Windows Update troubleshooting article. A stalled percentage alone is not enough to diagnose the underlying issue.

Use a Windows update error code to choose a focused check
An error code can point to a relevant troubleshooting route, but it is not a definitive diagnosis of what is wrong with a particular PC. Microsoft associates the following codes with possible causes:

Free disk space if storage is the problem
If the PC is low on space, free space on the drive and then try Windows Update again. Microsoft notes that a device with a small hard drive may need a USB drive for an update. That is a possible aid when storage is the barrier, not a general fix for every pending update.
Microsoft’s page gives minimum free-space figures specifically for an OS upgrade: 16 GB for a 32-bit OS upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit OS upgrade (Microsoft Support, page checked 2026). Those figures are not stated as requirements for every routine Windows Update. See Microsoft’s storage and update guidance.

Try Windows Update reinstall recovery for certain system problems
If troubleshooting points to a system-file or Windows component problem, Windows 11 may offer a repair option that reinstalls the current Windows version while keeping apps, files, and settings. Availability can depend on the Windows version and the device’s state.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now, if the option is available.
- Keep the PC connected to power and the internet while the process runs.
Microsoft describes this as reinstalling the same Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Read its Windows Update reinstall instructions before starting.
Uninstall an update if the problem began afterward
If the PC’s problem started after a particular update was installed, uninstalling that update may be an appropriate recovery route. Begin with the least disruptive option that fits the problem. Back up important files before recovery actions: some recovery options can cause data loss. Microsoft lists update removal among its Windows recovery options.
Quick Recap
Choose the next step by symptom and risk
| Situation | Best-fit route | Disruption or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Update is pending or stalled, with no specific clue | Get Help troubleshooter, restart, then check again. | Low-friction first step. |
| Error code points to service, blocking process, storage, or download issue | Follow the code-specific Microsoft instructions and address the matching likely issue. | A code narrows the route but does not confirm a diagnosis. |
| Low storage appears to prevent installation | Free drive space; consider USB storage only if the device needs extra space. | USB is relevant to the storage branch, not a universal remedy. |
| System-file or component problem persists | Check for Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. | Availability varies; it reinstalls the same Windows version and requires power and internet. |
| Problem began after an installed update | Consider uninstalling that update through Windows recovery options. | Recovery steps can carry data-loss risk; back up first. |
