Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows 11 taskbar icons stop responding after you change their alignment, first restart Windows Explorer: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, find Windows Explorer under Processes, right-click it, and select Restart. Then test Start and the taskbar icons. This is a sensible first recovery step, not proof that changing alignment caused the problem.
First identify what is failing
“Not responding” can describe different symptoms, and the right repair depends on which one you see:

- Icons look normal but clicks do nothing: start by restarting Windows Explorer.
- Icons are blank or missing: Microsoft’s icon-cache procedure may apply.
- Start and most or all of the taskbar are unresponsive: restart Explorer first, then collect details about the Windows version and recent changes if the problem continues.
Microsoft documents how to change taskbar alignment, but its documentation does not say that changing alignment causes clicks to stop working or identify a specific Windows 11 build with this defect.

Restart Windows Explorer
Windows Explorer hosts the taskbar, so restarting it can refresh the shell without restarting the PC. A Microsoft Q&A reply suggests this as a recovery action for a nonresponsive taskbar; it is community advice, not a guaranteed fix.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If needed, select More details.
- Under Processes, locate Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it and select Restart. The taskbar may disappear briefly while Explorer restarts.
- Try the affected icons and Start again.
If you cannot interact with Task Manager or restarting Explorer does not help, avoid jumping straight to registry edits or system recovery. Note whether Start is affected, whether the whole taskbar fails, and whether the icons are blank or merely unresponsive.
Check the alignment setting after the taskbar recovers
To confirm or change the preference in Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar alignment. Microsoft documents two choices: Center and Left. Use Settings for normal changes rather than editing the registry.

Clear the icon cache only for blank or missing icons
If icons are blank or missing—not simply failing to open when clicked—Microsoft documents clearing the local icon cache. Save open work first. This procedure is targeted at icon display and is not established as a fix for every unresponsive taskbar.

CD /d %userprofile%AppDataLocal, then runDEL IconCache.db /a. - Return to Task Manager, select File > Run new task, enter
explorer.exe, and run it to start Explorer again. - Check whether the icons display correctly.
Microsoft’s same troubleshooting article also describes re-registering ShellExperienceHost and checking shortcut IconHandler registry values. Those are further blank-icon troubleshooting steps, not first-line fixes for icons that look normal but do not respond. Before modifying registry values, follow Microsoft’s instruction to back up the registry; an incorrect change can cause problems.
If restarting Explorer does not solve it
The available guidance does not establish one universal next repair for a taskbar that remains unresponsive after an alignment change. Before trying more invasive recovery, record the information that can help distinguish a shell issue from an update or broader Windows problem:

A Microsoft Q&A thread about a generally nonresponsive taskbar mentions sfc /scannow and DISM image repair, as well as update rollback or System Restore. These are community suggestions, not confirmed fixes for an alignment-related fault. System repair commands and especially rollback or restore can have wider effects; use them only when the broader symptoms warrant it and after understanding the recovery consequences.
What is known about alignment and this symptom
Microsoft’s taskbar guidance confirms that Windows 11 supports centered or left-aligned icons. Its settings reference documents the associated preference value. Neither source links changing that preference to taskbar clicks becoming unresponsive, so timing alone does not establish the root cause. Start with the reversible Explorer restart, then choose any further step based on the actual symptom.
