Your device can be connected to Wi-Fi and still have no internet because the Wi-Fi link to your router and the router’s connection to the internet are separate. Start by checking whether other devices on the same network can get online; that quickly shows whether to focus on one device or on the shared network and service.
Why does my Wi-Fi have no internet?
Wi-Fi connects your phone, computer, or other device to a nearby router. The router then needs a working connection through a modem or other network equipment to reach the internet. A device may successfully join the Wi-Fi network even if that upstream connection is down. Microsoft and Google both describe cases where a device is connected to the router or home Wi-Fi but cannot reach the internet (Microsoft Support; Google Home and Nest Help).

The message “No Internet Connection” does not by itself identify the failed part. The useful clues are whether other devices work, whether a wired connection works, and whether the problem also occurs on another Wi-Fi network.

First, find out whether one device or the whole network is affected
- Connect another phone, tablet, or computer to the same Wi-Fi and try to open a website.
- If possible, connect the affected device to a different Wi-Fi network. Turn off cellular data while testing a phone so it cannot silently use mobile service instead of Wi-Fi.
- If you have an Ethernet cable and a device with an Ethernet port, test a wired connection to the router.
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Only one device cannot get online on your home Wi-Fi | The problem is more likely specific to that device, its settings, or an app or site. | Check its Wi-Fi and airplane-mode settings, then try another network. |
| Several devices fail on the home Wi-Fi | A shared router, modem, connection, or service issue is more likely. | Check equipment power and cables, restart the network equipment, then check for a provider outage. |
| Wi-Fi fails, but the same device works over Ethernet | The wired internet path works, pointing toward the Wi-Fi router or wireless connection. | Check router placement, wireless settings, and whether other devices can use Wi-Fi. |
| The affected device also fails on another Wi-Fi network | The device or its network configuration becomes a stronger suspect. | Review device settings and seek support for the device if it cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network. |
These comparisons are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular failed component. Microsoft recommends using an Ethernet test to distinguish a Wi-Fi-router problem from a broader connection problem, while Google advises checking other Wi-Fi devices and contacting the provider if none can reach the internet (Microsoft Support; Google Home and Nest Help).

If only one device is offline
Check the basic connection
- Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and airplane mode is off.
- Confirm the device joined the intended network, rather than a guest network or a nearby network with a similar name.
- Move closer to the router and try again; a weak or unstable wireless link can interfere with access.
- If the device is on a work or school network, ask its administrator before changing network settings.
On Windows, automatic addressing normally depends on DHCP, and the device also needs a usable DNS server to look up website names. If you are troubleshooting those settings, use Windows-specific guidance rather than applying commands or reset steps intended for another operating system. Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting and network settings (Microsoft Support).
Separate a device problem from an app or website problem
Try more than one website or app. If some services work and one does not, the Wi-Fi connection may not be the cause; the individual service could be unavailable or having a separate problem. If nothing works on the affected device but other devices on the same Wi-Fi do, focus on that device’s settings, VPN or security software, or its network configuration.

If an iPhone or iPad cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network, Apple advises contacting Apple Support. A network-settings reset is a later option, not a harmless first test: Apple warns that it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords as well as mobile, VPN, and APN settings. Check Apple’s instructions before using it (Apple Support).

Check the modem, router, and cables
- Check that the modem and router have power and that their cables are firmly connected.
- If the modem and router are separate devices, inspect the connection between them as well as the cable or service connection entering the modem.
- Restart the network equipment: unplug the router and modem, then reconnect them. Allow the equipment time to start before testing again.
- Try the connection from another device. If available, test Ethernet to distinguish a wireless problem from an upstream connection problem.
For Nest Wi-Fi setup troubleshooting, Google specifically recommends checking that the Ethernet cable is seated securely (Google Home and Nest Help). The exact equipment and indicator lights vary by model, so consult its own instructions if a light or status message is unclear.

Check for a local service outage
If multiple devices remain offline after the equipment checks, check your internet provider’s outage information or contact the provider. A local outage can leave the home Wi-Fi network available while internet access is not. Google recommends contacting the provider when no Wi-Fi device can reach the internet (Google Home and Nest Help).
When to change router settings or replace equipment
Do not make a purchase just because a device says it has no internet. First establish whether the fault is limited to Wi-Fi, affects all devices, or also appears on a different network. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, check that the router is powered, in range, and configured for a wireless band your device supports. If your router offers more than one supported band, trying another can help isolate a compatibility or signal issue. Microsoft also recommends checking router firmware and device compatibility in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance (Microsoft Support).

Consider replacing a router only after the comparisons point to the router itself—for example, when wired internet works but multiple devices cannot use its Wi-Fi, or when the equipment is incompatible or no longer functions reliably. If every device also fails over a wired connection, a new Wi-Fi router is unlikely to resolve an ISP outage or a modem/service problem.
What to tell your internet provider or device support
When you ask for help, report the results rather than only saying “the Wi-Fi is broken.” Note which devices fail, whether any device works on the same network, whether the affected device works on another Wi-Fi network, and whether Ethernet works. Include any relevant equipment status messages and whether restarting the modem and router changed anything. These details help support staff distinguish a device issue from a wireless, equipment, or service problem.
