Start by identifying the Kindle model and separating a Wi-Fi connection failure from a browser or screen problem. Amazon’s Wi-Fi guidance says no Kindle supports 6 GHz; models released before 2021 also do not support 5 GHz or WPA3. A network mismatch can look like a faulty reader, while a connected Kindle may still struggle with a particular website. The steps below begin with checks that do not erase data and reserve a factory reset for persistent problems.
First, identify the Kindle and the symptom
Kindle e-readers are not interchangeable: supported Wi-Fi bands and software updates vary by generation. Before following model-specific update or browser advice, find the model and software version in the device settings or Amazon account/device information, then check Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page for the corresponding model.

Be precise about what is failing. “Refresh problem” might mean a frozen E Ink display, slow page rendering, a page that appears stale, or a site that no longer works in the browser. Those symptoms do not have one established common cause. Also note whether the Kindle connects to any network, and which browser page or task fails.
Fix Wi-Fi connection problems
Check the Kindle and router basics
- Turn off Airplane Mode and confirm the network name and password.
- Check whether another phone or computer can connect to the same network.
- Move the Kindle closer to the router and reduce nearby wireless interference or network congestion if practical.
- Check the router’s band and security settings against the Kindle’s generation.
Amazon states that Kindle devices do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi. Kindle devices released before 2021 also do not support 5 GHz or WPA3 encryption. Do not try to connect a pre-2021 Kindle to a 5 GHz-only network; if the router offers a compatible 2.4 GHz network, try that instead. See Amazon’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting guidance for its compatibility notes and sequence.

Enter a hidden network manually
If the router does not broadcast its network name, use the Kindle’s connection flow and select Other to enter the network details manually. Type the exact network name and password; a small mismatch can prevent connection. Amazon’s internet connection instructions cover hidden networks.
Try a phone hotspot to isolate the cause
Temporarily connect the Kindle to a phone’s personal hotspot. If it connects there, Amazon says the problem is with the original network or its settings. If it cannot connect to the hotspot either, the Kindle, its software, or its account/device condition becomes more likely, though the test alone does not identify which one.

Public Wi-Fi and some hotspots require a separate sign-in, such as a welcome-page prompt, PIN, voucher, or one-time password. Open a simple page in the Kindle browser and look for the network’s login page. Amazon describes this approach, but an older browser is not guaranteed to support every provider’s sign-in portal.
Restart a frozen or slow Kindle
Amazon recommends restarting a Kindle to address intermittent issues such as a frozen screen or slow performance. This procedure is a restart, not a factory reset:

- Press and hold the power button until a power dialog appears or the screen goes blank.
- Keep holding the button for 40 seconds, then release it.
- Wait a few seconds for the Kindle to reboot.
See Amazon’s Kindle restart instructions if you need the official procedure.
Check for the correct software update
Amazon says Kindle software updates download and install automatically when the device is connected. If the Kindle cannot update wirelessly, Amazon also provides manual updates, but the file must match the exact model and generation. Select the model on the software updates page before downloading anything; do not use a version listed for a different Kindle.

Manual installation requires transferring the update from a desktop computer with a USB data cable compatible with the Kindle’s model and port. The connector is not the same across all generations, so confirm the model before choosing a cable. Amazon’s Kindle 11th Generation setup page describes USB file transfer for that generation.

When a page will not refresh or a website will not load
First establish whether the Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi and whether other browser pages load. If no network works, continue with the Wi-Fi checks above. If the connection works but one site does not, the problem may be limited to that site or the older browser’s ability to support it.

Amazon’s cited guidance explains connecting to networks and checking for hotspot welcome pages, but it does not document a universal page-refresh command or provide a compatibility list for modern websites on older Kindle browsers. Do not assume a refresh gesture, key combination, or setting works across every model. If a site depends on browser features the Kindle lacks, that can be a compatibility ceiling rather than a Wi-Fi fault. A more specific diagnosis depends on the Kindle model, generation, software version, and target site.
Use a factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset removes personal data, downloaded content, and content that has not synced, and it deregisters the Kindle so it must be registered again. Sync or otherwise save anything important where possible. Consider a reset only if the network checks, restart, and appropriate model-specific software update have not resolved a persistent problem.
Follow Amazon’s factory reset instructions for the device. The reset is destructive to local and unsynced content; it is not another name for restarting.
