If your router’s MAC address filter is blocking a device, check the address that device is currently using for that Wi-Fi network and add that address to the router’s allowed list. Many phones and computers use a private or randomized Wi-Fi address, so the router may not recognize the device’s hardware MAC. If needed, set a stable private address for that network; turn private addressing off only as a last resort because it reduces privacy.
Why MAC filtering can block a device
MAC filtering applies a router rule to the address presented by a device’s Wi-Fi interface. If the router is configured to block new devices unless they appear on an allowlist, a missing or mismatched address can prevent connection. The Wi-Fi and Ethernet interfaces may have different MAC addresses, so an Ethernet address is not the right entry for Wi-Fi access.

Phones and computers may use a private or randomized address for each Wi-Fi network instead of their hardware address. That address can be stable on one network yet differ from the hardware address or the address used on another network. The address shown in the device’s details for the affected Wi-Fi network is the one to compare with the router’s entry.
MAC filtering is an access-control convenience, not strong identity authentication: matching an address does not robustly prove who is using a device.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Fix the router allowlist mismatch
- Confirm the failure. Note whether the device cannot join Wi-Fi, or joins but cannot reach local resources or the internet. On Apple devices, Apple recommends installing current software and retrying before disabling Private Wi-Fi Address for these problems.
- Check the router’s filtering mode. In the router administration interface, look for Access Control, MAC Filtering, an allowlist or whitelist, or a blocklist or denylist. Check whether it blocks new devices. In NETGEAR’s documented example, “Block all new devices from connecting” requires entering each new device’s Wi-Fi MAC address in the allowed list. Menu locations and behavior vary by router model and firmware; consult the maker’s current guide. NETGEAR’s Access Control guide explains its interface.
- Find the address used on this network. Use the platform instructions below and record the address shown for the affected Wi-Fi network—not an address from another network or the device’s Ethernet interface.
- Add that address to the router. Enter it in the allowed list, save or apply the rule, and reconnect the device.
- Verify the result. Recheck the device’s current Wi-Fi address and compare it with the saved router entry. If they match but access still fails, confirm that the rule saved correctly and check for other causes, such as an incorrect Wi-Fi password, a stale entry, or another router policy.
Find the Wi-Fi address on your device
iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Vision Pro
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Wi-Fi, then tap the network’s details button. Inspect Private Wi-Fi Address and the displayed Wi-Fi address. Apple’s setting is per network. On supported newer releases, the choices are Off, Fixed, and Rotating: Fixed keeps a private address for that network, while Off uses the hardware address. Rotating changes the private address every two weeks on the release families and conditions specified by Apple. The available labels depend on OS version. See Apple’s Private Wi-Fi Address instructions.
Android
Open the saved Wi-Fi network’s details and inspect its Privacy or MAC address type setting. The precise path and available choices vary by Android version and device maker. ASUS, for example, documents opening the network’s gear menu and selecting Device MAC. Use the actual address displayed for the network; Android behavior can differ by version and randomization mode. See ASUS’s instructions and the Android MAC randomization behavior documentation.

Windows
Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the affected network, and inspect Random hardware addresses and the network properties. Settings names can change between Windows releases. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi instructions describe the controls.
Choose a privacy-address setting if the address changes
First try adding the current network-specific address to the allowlist. If the address rotates or the network cannot manage the resulting entries, use a stable private address for that network if your device offers one. This often resolves an allowlist mismatch without exposing the hardware MAC.

| Option | What it means | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Update the router allowlist | Allow the private or randomized address currently used by the Wi-Fi connection. | Preserves private addressing, but the router entry may need updating if the address changes. |
| Use a fixed private address for that network | Where supported, keep the private address stable for the selected Wi-Fi network. | Can make allowlist management more predictable while retaining a network-specific private address. |
| Turn private/random addressing off for that network | Use the hardware MAC on supported Apple versions; other platforms may offer a device-MAC setting. | May satisfy a network that requires the hardware address, but reduces privacy. Prefer a network-specific change over a global one where available. |
On Apple releases with the newer controls, choose Fixed to keep the private address from rotating on that network; choose Off only if necessary. Windows provides random-address controls for all Wi-Fi networks and for a selected known network. On Android, the presence and label of a Device MAC choice depend on the manufacturer and version. Do not assume settings behave identically across platforms.
Private addresses make it harder to associate a device with its Wi-Fi activity across networks. The Internet Engineering Task Force explains that randomization can also disrupt services that rely on a persistent address. ASUS notes that router functions such as blocking, binding, scheduling, and content filtering may depend on the MAC address; TP-Link describes randomized devices appearing as unknown and offers renaming as an alternative to disabling the private address. See RFC 9797, ASUS’s guidance, and TP-Link’s guidance.

If MAC filtering is not the cause
- Check that the Wi-Fi password is correct and the device is connecting to the intended network.
- Confirm the router rule is enabled as intended, saved, and not superseded by another access policy.
- Remove an obsolete allowlist entry and replace it with the address currently shown for the affected network.
- If the device joins but lacks internet or local access, troubleshoot that separate symptom rather than assuming the allowlist is still blocking it.
