During a connected call, turn on Settings → General → Picture in Picture → Start PiP Automatically, then swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or press the Home button on older iPhones). The call should remain visible in a small, movable window while you use another app. PiP does not apply to audio-only WhatsApp calls, and a video received in a chat is a different feature.
If the window still does not appear, work through the checks below in order. Update WhatsApp and iOS, clear the app’s temporary state, test App Lock, and reinstall only after confirming a current chat backup.
First, confirm what is actually failing
Before changing settings, make a fresh WhatsApp video call and wait until the call is connected and the call screen is visible. Leave WhatsApp using the normal iPhone gesture. A working result is a small floating video window that stays on screen while you open another app; Apple documents that PiP windows can be moved, resized, hidden at the edge, closed, or returned to full screen (Apple’s iPhone User Guide).
- Audio call: There is no video window to place in PiP. Start a video call instead.
- Video in a chat: Playing a received or sent clip is not the same as a live-call PiP session.
- Screen sharing: WhatsApp supports screen sharing, but the available documentation does not establish that every screen-sharing state behaves exactly like a camera video call. Test it separately.
- Call ends: This is different from a missing window. If the call disconnects, investigate the call or network problem as well as PiP.
- Video freezes or disappears while audio continues: PiP may have activated incorrectly, or the call may have a separate video or connection problem.
WhatsApp’s iOS PiP rollout was widely associated with version 23.3.77 in early 2023, according to iDownloadBlog and Macworld. That historical version is not a current minimum requirement.

Turn on the iPhone’s automatic PiP setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Picture in Picture.
- Enable Start PiP Automatically.
- Place a new WhatsApp video call and test again.
This is an iPhone-wide control, not a WhatsApp-specific switch. It permits automatic PiP when an app and the current content support it; it cannot force PiP in an unsupported call state. Apple explains that PiP availability depends on app support (iPhone User Guide).
Use the correct exit gesture
- Face ID iPhone: Swipe up from the bottom edge to the Home Screen while the connected video call is on screen.
- Home-button iPhone: Press the Home button once.
If nothing happens, return to WhatsApp, confirm that the call is still connected, and try the gesture again. Do not swipe up from an unrelated chat video and use that result to judge live-call PiP.

Update WhatsApp and iOS
Update WhatsApp
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Look for WhatsApp under available updates and tap Update.
Version numbers change by region and over time. The U.S. App Store listing checked on August 18, 2026 showed WhatsApp 26.32.73; it also listed iOS 15.1 or later as the requirement. Treat those figures as a dated reference, not a permanent minimum. Check the current listing for your region (WhatsApp Messenger on the U.S. App Store).
Update iOS
- Open Settings → General → Software Update.
- Install an available update and restart if iOS requests it.
- Make another WhatsApp video call and test PiP.
Updating can resolve compatibility or regression problems, but no specific iOS release is established as a guaranteed WhatsApp PiP fix.

Clear temporary app state
Force-quit WhatsApp
- Open the iPhone app switcher.
- Find the WhatsApp preview.
- Swipe the preview upward to close it.
- Reopen WhatsApp, start a new video call, and test PiP.
Force-quitting closes the current app process; it does not delete chats or your account.
Restart the iPhone
Restart the iPhone after force-quitting, then test a new call before changing additional settings. A restart is a low-risk way to clear a temporary iOS or app-process failure, but it is not a guaranteed repair.

Temporarily test WhatsApp App Lock
A secondary troubleshooting report identifies WhatsApp’s App Lock as a possible reason PiP fails to continue in the background. This is a diagnostic possibility, not a documented requirement or confirmed cause.
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings → Privacy (labels can vary slightly by version or region).
- Find App Lock.
- Temporarily turn off Require Face ID or Require Touch ID.
- Force-quit and reopen WhatsApp, or restart the iPhone.
- Place a new video call and test PiP.
On iOS versions that offer Home Screen app locking, touch and hold the WhatsApp icon and choose Don’t Require Face ID if that option appears. Re-enable every lock after testing if you rely on it for privacy. Disabling App Lock reduces protection while WhatsApp is accessible (iDownloadBlog’s troubleshooting guide).

Use a comparison test to locate the fault
Try PiP in FaceTime or another app that clearly supports it, then compare the result with WhatsApp. Apple’s developer documentation describes PiP as an app-supported capability for video-call experiences (Apple Developer documentation).

Back up chats before reinstalling WhatsApp
Reinstallation may repair a damaged app installation, but it should be the last major step. Deleting WhatsApp before confirming a recent backup can put locally stored chat data at risk.
- Verify that WhatsApp has a recent chat backup in its backup settings.
- Delete WhatsApp only after confirming the backup is complete.
- Reinstall it from the App Store.
- Sign in with the same phone number.
- Restore the backup when prompted.
- Place a new video call and test PiP.
When to contact WhatsApp
Stop changing iPhone settings and report the problem when PiP works in other apps, WhatsApp and iOS are current, App Lock has been tested, force-quitting and restarting have failed, and a backed-up reinstall has not helped. In WhatsApp, use Settings → Help → Contact Us. The current App Store description lists that support path (WhatsApp Messenger listing).
Include your iPhone model, iOS version, WhatsApp version, whether the call was one-to-one or a group call, whether audio continued, and whether FaceTime PiP worked. Those details help distinguish an app-specific regression from a system-wide PiP problem.
