Start with the accessory: charge it, put it into pairing mode, move it close to your iPhone, and disconnect it from other devices. Then check Settings → Bluetooth, restart the iPhone, and forget and pair the accessory again. If several known-good accessories fail—or Bluetooth is grayed out—contact Apple rather than jumping to a factory reset.
First identify what is failing
The right fix depends on whether Bluetooth itself is unavailable, one accessory will not pair, a connection drops, or audio is simply routed somewhere else. Use this table to choose a starting point.
| Symptom | Start here |
|---|---|
| Bluetooth is grayed out or will not turn on | Restart the iPhone. If Bluetooth remains unavailable, contact Apple; repeated pairing attempts will not address a system-level problem. |
| Accessory does not appear under Other Devices | Charge it, put it into discovery mode, bring it close, and disconnect it from other devices. |
| Accessory appears but pairing fails | Check that it is not connected elsewhere, confirm compatibility, then forget and pair it again. |
| It says Not Connected or will not reconnect | Restart both devices, then remove the iPhone’s pairing record and pair again. |
| Connection drops or audio cuts out | Test locally stored audio nearby, away from possible interference; then compare with another phone or accessory. |
| It says Connected but there is no sound | Select the accessory as the audio output and check the app, volume, and car audio source. |
| Several accessories fail on this iPhone | Update iOS and use the cross-test below. If known-good accessories still fail, contact Apple. |
| Only AirPods or car Bluetooth has trouble | Use the model- or vehicle-specific steps in the sections below. |
Apple’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking accessory compatibility and the companion app’s Bluetooth permission.
Try the accessory-side checks first
A device that is switched on is not necessarily ready to pair. Before changing iPhone settings, check its power and pairing state.

- Charge the accessory or connect it to power. A low battery can prevent pairing or cause repeated disconnections.
- Turn it off and back on, then place it close to the iPhone.
- Use the accessory’s manual to enter pairing or discovery mode. The button and status-light pattern vary by model.
- Disconnect or unpair it from a phone, tablet, computer, television, or car it may still be using. Some accessories accept a new connection only after the old one ends.
- If the accessory has reached its paired-device limit, clear old entries using the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not assume that deleting the iPhone-side pairing clears the accessory’s own memory.
- Confirm that the accessory supports the iPhone and the feature you need. Bluetooth support alone does not guarantee that every profile or manufacturer-specific feature is compatible.
Apple’s accessory troubleshooting page advises bringing a previously connected accessory near the iPhone and putting a new one into discovery mode. If it works with another device but not the iPhone, Apple also recommends unpairing it from those other devices.
Check Bluetooth and the accessory app permission
- Open Settings → Bluetooth and confirm Bluetooth is on. Use this Settings screen—not just the Control Center button—so you can see the connection state and device list.
- Leave the Bluetooth screen open while putting the accessory in pairing mode.
- When its name appears under Other Devices, tap it. A PIN or passcode may be required; check the accessory’s instructions if prompted.
- If the accessory relies on a companion app, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth and allow Bluetooth access for that app.
The app permission matters for some trackers, medical accessories, smart locks, keyboards, and specialized controllers. Apple’s third-party Bluetooth pairing instructions describe the pairing screen and note that some accessories require a manufacturer-provided PIN or passcode.
Restart the iPhone
A normal restart is a low-risk way to clear a temporary software problem. It is not the same as a force restart, which is generally for an iPhone that is frozen or unresponsive.

If restarting did not help, removing the saved pairing record and making a fresh connection is the most useful general next step.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth.
- Tap the Info button beside the accessory.
- Tap Forget This Device, then confirm.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Put the accessory into pairing mode again.
- Return to Settings → Bluetooth and tap the accessory under Other Devices. Enter a PIN if requested.
Disconnect temporarily ends a connection but keeps its pairing record. Forget This Device deletes the iPhone’s record, so you must pair again; depending on the accessory, it may also remove custom settings or affect connections with other devices. Resetting the accessory is separate: it may erase the accessory’s saved pairings and must be done using the manufacturer’s procedure. Apple gives a similar forget, restart, and re-pair sequence for headphones that disconnect or cut out in its wireless audio troubleshooting guide.

Fix disconnects, cutouts, or distorted audio
Distance, obstacles, wireless congestion, streaming conditions, and the accessory itself can all affect the result. A controlled test helps separate them.
- Play downloaded or locally stored audio rather than streaming.
- Keep the iPhone within a few feet of the headphones or speaker.
- Try another room or location. Move away from walls or floors between devices, crowded areas, heavy Wi-Fi activity, microwaves, wireless speakers, and poorly shielded cables.
- If local playback is stable but streamed audio is not, investigate the network or streaming app before blaming Bluetooth hardware.
- If the issue persists, forget and re-pair the accessory, then test it with another phone and test another Bluetooth accessory with the iPhone.
Apple identifies distance, obstructions, crowded wireless environments, heavy Wi-Fi activity, microwaves, wireless speakers, and poorly shielded cables as possible sources of interference in its audio troubleshooting guidance. That makes interference one possible cause, not a diagnosis; continued failure with another accessory or in another location is more informative.

- Start playback, open the iPhone’s audio output selector, and choose the Bluetooth accessory. Being connected does not prove it is the active audio output.
- Check volume on both the iPhone and the accessory, and try a second app.
- End an active call, FaceTime call, navigation session, or voice recording that may be using a different audio route.
- Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth audio devices and try again.
- In a car, select Bluetooth audio as the vehicle’s source instead of radio, USB, or another input.
- Check whether the accessory supports the type of audio you need. Some devices handle calls, media, or both; controls and capabilities vary by manufacturer.
AirPods-specific checks
AirPods have model-specific pairing controls, so do not apply one reset-button instruction to every case.

- Up to 5 Devices Sync Connected: UGREEN Bluetooth dongle for PC supports up to 5 different types of Bluetooth devices to be connected at the same time without interfering with each other, such as Bluetooth mouse/keyboard/mobile phone/headphones, etc. If Bluetooth audio devices of the same type (such as speakers/headphones) are connected, only one device can play music.
- Plug and Play: The Bluetooth adapter is developed for Windows systems only and does not support other systems. No driver installation is required under Windows 11/10/8.1. NOTE: Win 7, Linux and MacOS System are NOT supported.
- Mini Size: An extremely compact Bluetooth stick that you can leave on your laptop or PC without removing it.The compact size does not interfere with other USB ports. Convenient to carry, no space occupation.
- What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)
- Charge the AirPods and case. For AirPods or AirPods Pro, open the case with the AirPods inside and hold it near the iPhone. If the setup animation does not appear, use manual pairing from Settings → Bluetooth.
- If setup does not appear, Apple’s current AirPods troubleshooting steps say to close the case, wait 15 seconds, reopen it, and then put the AirPods into pairing mode.
- Use the pairing control specified for your model. Apple’s AirPods guide for iOS 26 and later distinguishes AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3, which use a double-tap on the front of the case, from older models that use the rear setup button. Follow that guide for model-specific reset instructions.
- If only one AirPod fails, check that both it and the case are charging, then test each side separately. If the problem follows one bud across devices, the issue is more likely with that AirPod or its charging state.
- Compatible AirPods may switch automatically among Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Check nearby Macs, iPads, or Apple Watches if the sound seems to move unexpectedly.
Apple’s guide says the iPhone should have the latest iOS version installed; Wi-Fi or cellular service is needed when pairing if Find My features are required.
Check for iOS and accessory firmware updates
- On the iPhone, open Settings → General → Software Update.
- Install an available iOS update if practical, allow the iPhone to restart, and try the connection again.
- Check the accessory maker’s instructions for firmware updates. Some products require their companion app or another device to install one.
An update may improve compatibility or reliability, but it is not a guaranteed Bluetooth fix. Use the latest iOS version available for your iPhone rather than relying on a version number that can change.

Cars can retain their own pairing records, have device limits, or use separate profiles for calls and media. If the iPhone and vehicle remember an old connection, deleting only the phone-side record may not be enough.

- Remove the vehicle from Settings → Bluetooth on the iPhone using Forget This Device.
- Use the vehicle’s infotainment settings to delete the iPhone’s saved pairing there as well. Consult the vehicle manual for its Bluetooth menu.
- Restart the iPhone and the vehicle system if its manual allows it, then start a new pairing from the vehicle’s Bluetooth setup.
- Confirm the car is set to Bluetooth audio for music, and check that the correct vehicle profile is selected for calls and media.
If other accessories work with the iPhone but the car does not, the vehicle’s infotainment software, memory limit, or settings may be involved. Contact the vehicle manufacturer or dealer for system-specific guidance rather than resetting all iPhone settings.
Reset Network Settings only as an advanced step
Consider this only after restarting, re-pairing, and updating have failed. It is a broader software reset, not a guaranteed Bluetooth repair. Before proceeding, account for saved Wi-Fi networks and any VPN, APN, school, business, or managed-network setup.
- Open Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Enter the iPhone passcode if prompted, then confirm.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and pair Bluetooth accessories again.
This removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and may reset cellular, VPN, and APN settings. Apple documents the path and effects in its network troubleshooting guidance.
Find out whether the iPhone or accessory is at fault
Use one known-good phone and, if possible, one known-good accessory. Change one side at a time so the result points to the failing component.
| Test | Result | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Try the same accessory with another phone | It fails there too | The accessory, its battery, or its firmware is the likely issue; contact its manufacturer. |
| Try another accessory with this iPhone | It works | The original accessory or its pairing state is the more likely cause. |
| Try several known-good accessories with this iPhone | They all fail | The iPhone’s software, settings, or hardware deserves attention from Apple. |
| Accessory appears but refuses to pair | It may still be connected elsewhere or not actually in discovery mode | Repeat the accessory-side checks before changing broader iPhone settings. |
| Pairing works but audio remains unstable | The fault may be environmental, routing-related, firmware-related, or accessory hardware | Compare local audio, another location, another phone, and another accessory. |
If only one accessory fails after these tests, stop changing iPhone-wide settings and contact that accessory’s manufacturer. If multiple known-good accessories fail, Bluetooth is grayed out, or the iPhone has physical or liquid damage, contact Apple. Apple specifically advises escalation when Bluetooth cannot be turned on, is grayed out, no accessories connect, or the accessory maker has confirmed its product works; see Apple’s Bluetooth support guidance.
When not to erase or broadly reset the iPhone
Do not jump from forgetting one accessory to erasing the iPhone. A network reset is already disruptive and should be reserved for persistent problems; Reset All Settings is broader and is rarely justified for an isolated Bluetooth failure. Erase All Content and Settings is not a routine Bluetooth fix and should be considered only if Apple Support directs it or you are preparing the phone for replacement. A full erase cannot repair a defective accessory or failed Bluetooth hardware.
