If one person—or several—are missing from WhatsApp on your iPhone, start by searching for their name or number in WhatsApp. Then check that WhatsApp can access the contact: Limited Access must include that person, or you can grant Full Access. If the permission is unavailable or greyed out, check Screen Time restrictions before trying anything more disruptive.
First, search WhatsApp for the contact
- Open WhatsApp and go to the Chats tab.
- Pull down on the Chats screen if the search bar is not visible.
- Search for the person by name or phone number. You can also start from the add-chat control in the Calls tab.
If the person appears in search, you may be able to open or start the conversation without changing your contact settings. If they do not appear, continue with the permission checks below. WhatsApp describes these search options in its Contact names missing guidance.

Check WhatsApp’s access to iPhone contacts
On current iPhone software, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Contacts. If WhatsApp has Limited Access, make sure the missing person is among the selected contacts. Otherwise, choose Full Access to let WhatsApp access the phone’s address book.
Limited Access is the more private option because it exposes only contacts you select, but a person left out of that selection may not appear in WhatsApp. Full Access provides broader address-book access. WhatsApp says contact names may not appear without access, and incomplete access can leave some contacts missing. Your existing WhatsApp chat history remains saved regardless of which access choice you make. See WhatsApp’s About contacts permissions and Apple’s guide to controlling contact access.

If contacts are stale or not updating, reselect access
If WhatsApp already has contact access but the list seems out of date, reopen Settings > Privacy & Security > Contacts > WhatsApp. Reselect the contacts allowed under Limited Access, or switch to Full Access if you want WhatsApp to see the full address book. Apple notes that app contact access can be changed later in this privacy settings area.
If Contacts access is greyed out or unavailable
Check whether Screen Time is preventing changes: open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and allow changes to Contacts. If WhatsApp remains greyed out or missing after you check those restrictions, WhatsApp says a phone restore may be necessary. A restore can affect data and settings, so do not attempt one without first consulting current Apple restore guidance and understanding the backup implications.

If only certain people are missing
Verify the phone number format
For an international contact, check that the saved number uses the complete international format, including the country code. Then search WhatsApp using the number as well as the saved name.

If the missing contacts come from an Exchange account, ask the account administrator whether an organization policy blocks WhatsApp or other apps from accessing those contacts. In that case, changing WhatsApp’s iPhone permission may not be enough to make them visible.

Choose the least disruptive fix
- One missing person: Search by name and number, then confirm that person is included in Limited Access.
- Many missing people: Check WhatsApp’s Contacts permission and whether Full Access is the intended choice.
- Permission cannot be changed: Review Screen Time’s Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Only international or work contacts are missing: Check number formatting or ask the Exchange administrator about access policy.
