How to Fix Websites That Don’t Work When Safari Content Blockers Are On

Turn off Safari content blocking for the affected site, reload and test it, then restore blocking and troubleshoot other causes if the problem remains.

If a website stops working in Safari, first turn off content blocking for that site only. Reload the page and test the feature that failed. If it still does not work, restore blocking and check other possible causes rather than assuming the blocker was responsible.

Turn off content blockers for one website on Mac

  1. Open the affected website in Safari.

  2. Click the Page menu in the Smart Search field and choose Website Settings.

  3. Turn off Enable content blockers for that website, reload the page, and test the specific feature that was failing. This setting applies to the active site, not every website. Apple documents this control in its Safari website settings guide.

If the Page menu route is unavailable, use Safari > Settings > Websites > Content Blockers. Find the site and set its option to Off. Apple says Off means ads and other unwanted content are not blocked on that website. Avoid changing the default for websites without custom settings if only one site is affected. See Apple’s Content Blockers settings guide.

Adjust extension access on iPhone

  1. Open the affected website in Safari and tap the Page Menu button beside the search field.

  2. Tap Manage Extensions. If the relevant extension offers per-site controls, turn it off for this website.

  3. Reload the page and test the feature that failed.

To review an extension’s overall settings, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions, select the extension, and check Allow Extension. Safari profiles may require enabling an extension separately for each profile. Not every extension offers the same per-site options; Apple’s iPhone Safari extensions guide describes the available controls.

If the site still does not work

Turn content blocking back on if disabling it did not fix the problem. A site can fail for reasons unrelated to content blockers, so test the other likely causes one at a time. Apple notes that a website may require permission for a device feature or downloads, or may depend on pop-up windows. Its Safari troubleshooting guidance for Mac also recommends checking extensions and website settings.

Apple Support gives a useful example: “For example, a website may require that you turn off content blockers, allow access to your camera or microphone, allow downloads, or allow pop-up windows.” If a brief diagnostic change does not solve the issue, restore privacy settings you changed and continue with the other checks.

Keep the exception as narrow as possible

If the website works with blocking disabled, leave the exception only for that site if Safari or the extension supports it. If the site still fails, restore blocking and investigate the other settings above. The cited Apple guidance explains how to change these controls but does not quantify the protection lost when blocking is disabled.

Menu labels can vary by software version and localization. Apple’s cited iPhone guide is labeled iOS 27, while its Mac website-settings reference is labeled macOS 26. If your labels differ, look for the corresponding Website Settings, Websites, Content Blockers, or Manage Extensions controls.
