Start with Settings > Accessibility: E-Day documents aim-assist, stick-control, and primary-weapon toggle options there. Adjusting them can make aiming and switching behave more predictably, but the available official sources do not establish a widespread launch-build defect or a guaranteed fix. Change one setting at a time, then test it in the same situation.
Check your current settings first
Before changing controls, note their current values so you can restore them. The official Gears of War: E-Day Accessibility guide documents the relevant options under Settings > Accessibility. The labels and available choices below are from that guide; if your game presents different options, follow the labels shown in your current build.

Adjust aim assist to match how you want to aim
Test the aim-assist choices individually in a consistent situation. This helps distinguish a preference mismatch from an input problem. The guide lists four choices:
| Option | Documented behavior | Try it when |
|---|---|---|
| Off | Aim assist is disabled. | You want to judge manual stick aiming without assistance. |
| Default | The guide lists this as an aim-assist option but does not specify its precise behavior. | You want to compare the standard option with the more explicit snap and lock-on behaviors. |
| Snap Aim | Briefly pulls the reticle toward the closest valid nearby enemy. | You want a brief correction rather than a sustained target hold. |
| Lock-on Aiming | While aim is active, holds the closest valid target to the reticle. Flicking left or right moves to another valid target if one is available. | You want the reticle to remain on a valid target while aiming. |
The Target Lock Audio Cue depends on Lock-on Aim. If you are comparing that mode, account for the cue as part of the feedback rather than treating it as a separate aim-assist choice.

Check stick layout and aiming controls
When the right-stick mapping feels uncomfortable
Try Swap Sticks While Aiming if your aiming stick arrangement does not feel right. The guide also documents Controller Remap and invert-axis and swap-stick options, so you can set the input mapping to your preference instead of adapting to an unwanted layout.
When you use a single-stick setup
Try Single Stick Control. The accessibility guide says it works best alongside Swap Sticks While Aiming for the described cover-and-aim use. Test the combination in the relevant gameplay situation; do not assume either option is a repair for an unresponsive controller.

- 30-foot wireless range
- Infected Omen Weapon Pack downloadable content

Make primary-weapon switching predictable
If switching between your two primary weapons feels awkward, check Toggle Primary Weapon in Accessibility. The official guide says it lets you press the same weapon-swap button to switch weapons and then switch back—for example, D-pad left to switch and D-pad left again to return. This changes the toggle behavior; it does not fix an input that fails to register.
Also inspect Controller Remap and confirm that the intended weapon-swap control is assigned. Test the selected button deliberately before concluding that switching is broken.
Rank #3

- Features a laser-etched, battle-weathered design with the Crimson Omen
- Includes a unique Gears of War 4 multiplayer lobby banner and three Gears packs for special in-game items

Test changes without confusing preference and defect
- Open Settings > Accessibility and record the current values of the options you plan to change.
- Change one relevant option—aim assist, stick control, remapping, or Toggle Primary Weapon—rather than several at once.
- Repeat the same aiming or weapon-switching action in the same mode and situation.
- If the result is less predictable, restore the previous value and try a different option.
Do not assume aim assist behaves the same in every mode. The August 3, 2026 beta FAQ said aim assist applied to Campaign and Horde Siege but not Versus. That statement describes the beta, not a confirmed launch-build rule; the reviewed official sources do not establish whether the limitation remained unchanged after launch.
When to report a persistent problem
If aiming or weapon switching remains unresponsive or inconsistent after checking the relevant settings, report a reproducible example through official Gears of War support. Include the platform, game mode, controller or other input device, relevant settings, and the exact sequence that produces the problem. Screenshots can help where they show a relevant setting or error. Check the Xbox service-status page as well, since a service-side issue may affect play.

In a June 9, 2026 Xbox podcast, developer Matt Searcy described adding a jump button while rebuilding movement and retaining the series’ heavier feel. The discussion also describes active-reload feedback as part of the aiming experience. That design context may help explain why muscle memory from an earlier Gears game feels different, but it does not prove that a particular control problem is intentional or that a setting will solve it.
