If The Witcher 3 looks pale, dim, or oddly desaturated on PC, first compare the same scene with Windows HDR turned off. If that changes the image, work through Windows HDR and Auto HDR, then the game’s HDR calibration and your display’s picture modes. If it does not, check the display mode and game installation. Change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause without degrading unrelated graphics options.
Start by identifying your display and game setup
The cause can differ between PCs: Windows HDR, Auto HDR, the game’s own HDR settings, the monitor or TV’s picture mode, or a game or driver issue may be involved. Before changing anything, note:

- Whether you are using The Witcher 3 Remastered or an older installation.
- Whether the game is running in DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, if both options are available in your installation.
- Whether Windows HDR is on for the display where the game appears.
- Whether Auto HDR is enabled.
- Whether the monitor or TV supports HDR.
Use the same in-game scene for each comparison. Avoid changing multiple settings at once; otherwise, it will be harder to tell which change affected the washed-out colors.
Compare the game with Windows HDR off
Turn off Windows HDR temporarily, then view the same scene again. Close and relaunch the game if the image does not update after you change the display mode. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix for every PC.

- If the image looks normal with Windows HDR off: focus on Windows HDR, Auto HDR, the game’s HDR calibration, and the display’s HDR mode.
- If it still looks washed out: continue to the display picture-mode and game checks below. Windows HDR is less likely to be the only factor.
Intel notes that enabling HDR in Windows 10 or Windows 11 can reduce color saturation, and sometimes brightness, on some laptops, monitors, and TVs. Its explanation also points to a possible gamut mismatch: SDR may look oversaturated when stretched across a display’s wider native gamut, while HDR maps colors to the gamut the display supports. See Intel’s HDR support guidance.
Check Windows HDR and Auto HDR separately
Confirm HDR is enabled on the intended display
If you use multiple displays, select the one running The Witcher 3 before checking its HDR state. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Display, select the HDR-capable display, and review its HDR controls. Windows HDR and the game’s own HDR implementation are separate settings, so note which ones are active during each test.

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Turn Auto HDR off for a comparison
Temporarily disable Auto HDR and compare the same scene. Auto HDR can expand the color range and brightness of supported SDR games, but it requires an HDR-capable display; it is a Windows conversion feature, distinct from a game’s own HDR rendering. Microsoft explains the feature and its display requirement in its Windows 11 Auto HDR overview. If disabling it changes the image, leave it off while you test the game’s own SDR and HDR modes separately.

Windows provides HDR/SDR brightness balance controls for how SDR content appears when HDR is active. Adjust them only if the brightness balance is uncomfortable. They are not a color-saturation control, so raising or lowering this setting is not a reliable way to correct pale colors.

Match the monitor or TV picture mode to the content
Open the display’s on-screen menu (OSD) and check its picture or color mode. Names vary by model, but vivid, dynamic, or similarly enhanced modes can alter the image. For an SDR comparison, try the display’s sRGB or Rec.709 mode if available. When HDR is active, compare with the display’s appropriate HDR or wide-gamut mode instead.
This distinction matters because SDR can seem less vivid in HDR if the display had previously stretched SDR across its native wide gamut. Boosting saturation may conceal that difference, but it can make colors less accurate rather than fix the underlying mode mismatch.

Calibrate HDR in The Witcher 3 Remastered
If you are playing The Witcher 3 Remastered with HDR active, inspect the in-game HDR calibration panel and adjust it for your actual display. CD PROJEKT RED’s September 28, 2026 Remastered announcement lists an updated HDR calibration panel, updated tone mapping, and native DirectX 12 rendering. It does not give a universal calibration recipe or brightness values that apply to every monitor or TV.
Do not assume the menu names or rendering behavior are identical in an older installation. If you are not sure which edition you have, identify it before following Remastered-specific settings advice.

If colors still look wrong, check the game and drivers
Once Windows, game, and display modes have been compared, use the official support steps rather than changing unrelated graphics options or forcing saturation higher.
- Update the game. Confirm your installation is current. CD PROJEKT RED recommends current graphics drivers for Remastered.
- Update or clean-install the graphics driver. Use the driver troubleshooting resources linked from CD PROJEKT RED’s PC support index.
- Verify the game files. Use your game launcher’s file-integrity check, following the relevant guidance in the official support index.
- Record the setup if you contact support. Include the edition, renderer, Windows HDR and Auto HDR states, GPU model, monitor or TV model, and a screenshot of the affected scene.
The official support material provides general driver and file-integrity troubleshooting, but does not identify a single universal fix for washed-out colors. The cause depends on the game edition, graphics path, Windows settings, driver, and display.
