What Causes Warzone’s High CPU Usage
Warzone is CPU-sensitive because it has to simulate gameplay systems and feed the rendering pipeline. When your CPU hits sustained high usage (often 70–100%), you can see stutters, frame drops, and delayed input—especially in crowded areas.

Common culprits
- CPU-heavy in-game settings (high view distance, certain effects, high crowd density, heavy post-processing) that increase draw calls and game logic workload.
- Background software (browsers with many tabs, launchers, sync tools, Discord activity overlays, RGB control apps) stealing CPU time.
- Overlays and capture utilities (GeForce Experience/Share overlay, AMD overlay, Discord overlay, OBS capture, Steam overlay) adding hooks and extra processing.
- Driver and runtime overhead from outdated or corrupted graphics driver installs.
- Data or cache issues (shader compilation storms, corrupted cached files) that keep CPU busy longer than expected.
- Windows power management set to high performance sleep/parking behavior that doesn’t match your hardware tuning.
Before You Change Anything: Confirm the Problem
You want to be sure it’s actually Warzone driving CPU usage, not a background app that just happens to start at the same time.
Check with Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to the Processes tab.
- Start Warzone, then alt-tab back.
- Sort by CPU and look for: Call of Duty, CoD HQ, Warzone, or similarly named processes.
If Warzone processes sit at high CPU (for example, 80–95%) while GPU is low (for example, 40–70%), that’s a strong sign the bottleneck is CPU or overhead.
Confirm thread behavior with Resource Monitor (optional)
- Open Resource Monitor via Task Manager > Performance > Open Resource Monitor.
- Look for frequent spikes from Warzone and also check Associated Handles if you suspect a file/cache contention.
Fast Fixes That Usually Work First
These are the highest ROI steps. Do them in order, then retest CPU usage in a match (not just the main menu).
1) Restart clean and test in a single-user state
- Restart your PC.
- Before launching Warzone, close launchers and tools you don’t need (Browser, OBS, extra RGB apps).
- Launch Warzone and wait through initial shader compilation.
Retest for 5–10 minutes. Shader compilation can briefly raise CPU load; sustained high CPU during gameplay is the real issue.
2) Disable overlays temporarily
- Discord overlay: Settings > Game Overlay > turn off.
- Xbox Game Bar: Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar > off.
- GeForce overlay: GeForce Experience/driver overlay toggle off (or disable In-Game Overlay).
- Steam overlay: Steam > Settings > In Game > uncheck Enable Steam Overlay.
3) Change Windows power plan to Balanced
High-performance modes can sometimes worsen scheduling/parking behavior on specific systems.
- Open Control Panel > Power Options.
- Select Balanced.
Then test again in-game.
Optimize Warzone In-Game Settings for Lower CPU Load
CPU reduction usually comes from lowering “simulation-heavy” and “draw-call heavy” settings. You don’t need to drop everything—just pick the right levers.
Recommended CPU-focused settings (starting points)
| Setting | What to set | Why it helps CPU |
|---|---|---|
| View Distance | Low or Medium | Reduces objects being processed and drawn. |
| Effects Quality | Low or Medium | Less particle/system overhead per frame. |
| Shadow Quality | Low | Shadow rendering can force CPU/GPU synchronization. |
| Ambient Occlusion | Off or Low | Reduces extra passes and workload. |
| Anti-Aliasing | Off or Low (try Filmic/TSR only if needed) | Some AA paths add cost and pipeline complexity. |
| Post Process Quality | Low | Less per-frame processing overhead. |
| Texture Resolution | Medium/Normal (not ultra) | Prevents extra asset streaming overhead. |
| Model/Clutter Detail | Low/Medium | Reduces scene complexity. |
Resolution and upscaling: don’t overshoot CPU savings
Lower resolution mainly reduces GPU load, but it can indirectly help if CPU stalls are caused by GPU/driver waits. Still, your CPU fix is settings that reduce world complexity and per-frame systems.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
If you’re using upscaling (like NVIDIA DLSS-style options where available), keep it stable while you tune CPU settings. Change fewer variables at a time.
Disable “extra” features that can add overhead
- Turn off Motion Blur and Depth of Field if present.
- If there’s an option for On-Demand Texture Streaming, test both states—streaming can create periodic CPU spikes depending on storage speed and settings.
Update Drivers and System Components
Drivers affect CPU usage indirectly through scheduling overhead, shader compilation paths, and background telemetry/processes.
Update GPU driver cleanly (recommended)
- Download the latest WHQL driver for your GPU from the vendor site (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel).
- During install, choose Custom and enable Perform a clean installation (wording varies).
- Reboot and test Warzone again.
Update Windows and DirectX components
- Windows Update: install all pending updates on Windows 10/11.
- Reboot after updates.
Many “high CPU” complaints are actually runtime mismatch issues that show up as constant reprocessing.
Windows Settings That Reduce CPU Spikes
These tweaks can reduce scheduler contention and background wake-ups.
1) Disable CPU throttling side effects
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand System devices.
- Look for laptop power-related entries if you’re on a notebook and disable aggressive power features (if you know exactly what you’re changing).
If you’re on a desktop, skip this and focus on power plan and background processes.
2) Set controller of power to Balanced and disable deep sleep (laptops)
- Settings > System > Power & sleep > set sleep delay longer while testing.
- Plug in the charger for laptops. CPU boost behavior changes dramatically on battery.
3) Turn off “Game Mode” only if you see regressions
Game Mode in Windows typically helps, but if it correlates with worse CPU spikes on your machine, test with it toggled off. Use one variable at a time.
Kill Background CPU Hoggers (Without Guessing)
When Warzone starts, Windows services and apps often ramp up. Instead of randomly closing things, identify the top CPU users and remove them from your test environment.

Use Task Manager to find top offenders
- In Task Manager > Processes, sort by CPU.
- Start Warzone.
- Watch which processes spike during gameplay. Common examples: browser renderers, antivirus scans, sync clients (OneDrive/Dropbox), RGB software, audio enhancement tools.
Disable startup apps
- Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Disable apps you don’t need for gaming.
- Restart and re-test.
Control Overlays, Capture Tools, and “Performance” Utilities
These tools can raise CPU usage by intercepting frames, polling sensors, and creating additional threads.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- OBS Studio (Game Capture / Display Capture)
- ShadowPlay / NVIDIA overlay

- Browser extensions that inject scripts (especially with screen sharing)
Rule of thumb
If you’re actively recording/streaming, expect higher CPU. But if you’re not, disabling overlays is one of the fastest ways to reduce high CPU usage.
Shader Cache, Data Repairs, and In-Game Data Issues
If your CPU stays high after it “should” have finished compiling shaders, you may have cache/data problems. This is where repair and cache resets can help.
Wait for initial compilation, then retest
Warzone often compiles shaders on first launch after updates. Let it sit in a match for 10–20 minutes while monitoring CPU. If CPU remains pinned long after you’ve loaded into stable gameplay, move to repair steps.
Verify game files (Battle.net / Steam)
- Battle.net: Warzone/CoD HQ > Settings (gear) > Scan and Repair.
- Steam: Library > game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
Clear/rebuild shader cache carefully
If you’ve changed nothing and CPU usage is stuck high, clearing shader cache can force a rebuild with a cleaner state. Do it only after verifying files so you don’t chase a corruption loop.
The exact cache location depends on your install and launcher. If you’re unsure, search your launcher’s “shader cache” folder path and only delete the shader cache folder, not your entire game directory.
Advanced Tuning (When You Need More)
If you’ve already disabled overlays and tuned settings, advanced tuning can reduce CPU contention. Use these changes as “one at a time” experiments.

Set Warzone CPU priority to Normal
Some users accidentally set priority too high or let third-party tools alter it. Keep it at Normal for stability.
- Open Task Manager.
- Find the Warzone process.
- Right-click > Set priority > choose Normal.
CPU affinity: test with caution
Affinity can help if one subset of cores has scheduling conflicts. It can also hurt if you pick the wrong cores for your workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Task Manager > right-click Warzone > Set affinity.
- Try leaving at least half your logical processors unchecked/checked, then retest for 2–3 matches.
- Revert if you see worse frametimes or input lag.
Enable XMP/EXPO (only if stable)
If your RAM is running below rated speed, CPU can stall more often waiting on memory. If you haven’t enabled XMP/EXPO and your system supports it, turn it on in BIOS and validate stability.
Stability matters: unstable memory can raise CPU usage and cause stutters.
Consider CPU thermals and power limits
Thermal throttling makes CPU usage look “high” while clocks drop. Watch CPU temps during a match and ensure adequate cooling and correct power settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting: If the Main Fixes Don’t Work
Use this decision table to avoid random tinkering.
| Symptom | What to try first | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| CPU 90–100% in the menu | Disable overlays + verify files | Overhead from injection/capture or corrupted assets |
| CPU spikes only during load into match | Wait for shader compilation; reduce view distance | Normal compilation + scene complexity |
| CPU high in every match even after 30 minutes | Clean driver install + close background apps | Driver/runtime overhead or persistent background process |
| CPU high but GPU is also high and frames still low | Lower effects/shadows; test lower resolution | CPU-GPU synchronization or total system saturation |
| CPU high after a game update | Verify files; reset graphics settings to defaults | Settings mismatch or partial cache corruption |
Known gotchas
- Don’t change five settings at once. You won’t know what fixed it.
- Don’t judge CPU from the loading screen only. Test 5–10 minutes of live gameplay.
- Don’t ignore storage. If your game is on a slow HDD, asset streaming can drive higher CPU and stutters.
Comparisons and Alternatives (Clean Rebuild Paths)
If Warzone stays stuck with abnormal CPU behavior, use a “clean rebuild” approach. This is heavier, but it ends endless troubleshooting loops.
Option A: Repair + reset settings
- Verify game files (Scan and Repair / Verify integrity).
- Reset graphics settings to defaults.
- Apply only the CPU-focused changes from the table.
Option B: Clean driver + new shader rebuild
- Clean install latest WHQL GPU driver.
- Delete only shader cache (not the entire game).
- Launch Warzone and let it compile.
Option C: Full reinstall (last resort)
If CPU remains pinned regardless of settings, overlays, and driver changes, a full reinstall can remove deep corruption. Back up any custom configs before reinstalling if you use them.

FAQs
Is high CPU usage in Warzone normal?
Some CPU usage is expected, but sustained 90–100% during normal gameplay usually means overhead. If your frames are stable and CPU fluctuates normally, it may still be fine—but CPU saturation that correlates with stutter is not.
Why does Warzone use more CPU than my GPU?
That usually happens when settings or scene complexity are CPU-bound, or when a background process/overlay is injecting extra work. It can also occur with RAM or storage bottlenecks that stall the CPU waiting for data.
Will lowering resolution fix high CPU usage?
It may help a little indirectly, but resolution primarily reduces GPU load. For CPU reduction, focus on view distance, effects, shadows, and post-processing first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I cap FPS to reduce CPU load?
Often yes. Capping FPS to a stable target can reduce CPU spikes caused by unlimited frame pacing. If the game has a FPS limit option, try a cap 10–20% below your average stable FPS.
Does enabling XMP/EXPO lower Warzone CPU usage?
It can, if memory speed was limiting CPU performance. Stable, rated RAM speeds often improve frametimes and reduce stutter, which can indirectly lower “time spent busy” behavior.
Bottom Line
To fix Warzone’s high CPU usage, treat it like a controlled performance diagnosis: confirm the CPU hog is actually Warzone, remove overlays and background apps, tune CPU-heavy graphics settings (view distance, effects, shadows), and verify drivers and game files.
If you still see sustained saturation after those steps, switch to advanced tuning and clean rebuild paths (clean driver install, shader cache rebuild, then reinstall only if needed). You should be able to get noticeably smoother gameplay without sacrificing everything.
