These faults have different causes, so changing bed adhesion, temperature, or sanding without diagnosing the symptom can make the prop worse.
Identify the defect before changing settings
| What you see | Likely issue | Best first step |
|---|---|---|
| One or more corners curl upward or a large print bends away from the plate. | Warping: contraction during cooling is overcoming bed adhesion. | Check the material profile, first layer, build surface, cooling, and drafts. |
| A crack runs between printed layers, often allowing the upper section to bend or separate. | Layer separation, also called delamination. | Check temperature, fan and drafts, filament path, nozzle, and extrusion. |
| Two separately printed prop pieces pull apart at their join. | A weak assembly seam or poorly prepared mating faces. | Clean and fit the faces; consider light sanding and alignment features. |
| Texture is concentrated where supports touched, or on a face printed above supports. | Support-contact finish, not necessarily a printer fault. | Consider reorienting or splitting the model to reduce supports; finish only after checking for gaps. |
Warping, layer separation, and under-extrusion are not interchangeable diagnoses. Under-extrusion means the printer failed to deposit enough material, leaving gaps or missing strands; sanding cannot replace that material or restore a failed layer bond. Prusa’s troubleshooting guides describe both conditions and their possible causes: warping and layer separation.

Fix corners that lift or a prop that curls
- Check the slicer selection. Confirm the printer and filament are selected correctly, then start from the matching default material profile. A profile coordinates temperatures, speeds, and extrusion amounts; changing several values at once makes it harder to find the cause.
- Clean and inspect the build surface. Follow the plate maker’s cleaning instructions and check that the first layer is calibrated. Prusa recommends 90% or stronger isopropyl alcohol for many surfaces, but surface and material compatibility matter: PETG, ABS, and ASA can adhere too strongly to smooth PEI and may need a compatible separation layer. See Prusa’s first-layer guidance and the sheet manufacturer’s instructions. Do not push the nozzle closer to the plate as a substitute for diagnosing poor adhesion.
- Match cooling to the filament. Check that the part-cooling fan works as expected. PLA and PETG often use more cooling, while materials prone to warping need stable ambient conditions. Excessive fan can lift corners and weaken bonding between layers; use the filament maker’s guidance rather than applying one fan setting to every material.
- Control drafts and ambient temperature where appropriate. ABS-, ASA-, and some PC-type prints are more sensitive to cooling and drafts; an enclosure may help keep conditions stable. PLA and PETG generally need cooling, so a hot enclosure can be counterproductive. Follow the printer and filament guidance if it differs from general advice.
- Try a geometry or adhesion change one at a time. A brim can increase the area attached to the plate. Slowing the print or orienting the part nearer the center of the bed may help, depending on geometry and material. For selected high-temperature prints, a skirt or draft shield can help retain heat. These are options to test, not fixes to apply all at once.
- Use glue stick only when the sheet and filament call for it. A thin PVA layer can act as a separation layer on compatible combinations, including some PETG/smooth-PEI setups, and may protect the sheet from excessive bonding. Too much can leave surface artifacts; it is not a universal cure for warping. Do not pry a hot print from a surface that may be damaged by excessive adhesion.
Prusa’s warping guide discusses material profiles, surface cleanliness, cooling, ambient stability, brims, shields, speed, and orientation. Its recommendations may not match every printer generation, sheet, or filament brand.

Diagnose and repair a weak printed section
Separate layer delamination from under-extrusion
A crack that follows the layer direction and opens when the piece bends points toward weak layer bonding. Gaps, thin walls, or missing strands point toward under-extrusion or another extrusion problem. Either can make a prop fragile, and a cosmetic coating will not correct the underlying defect.

- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
Check the print process before patching the part
- Verify the selected filament profile and its temperature and cooling recommendations.
- Look for cold drafts or a fan setting that cools the part too aggressively for that material.
- Inspect the nozzle, extruder gears, and filament path for problems that could interrupt extrusion.
- Check the filament condition and confirm the printer is depositing material consistently.
For a relevant PLA layer-bonding problem, Prusa’s layer-separation guide suggests raising print temperature in 5 °C increments. It also describes increasing extrusion multiplier in 5% increments as a troubleshooting option. These are diagnostic adjustments for suitable setups, not universal production settings: change one relevant variable, reassess the result, and use the manufacturer’s profile and printer guidance where they differ. The same guide identifies drafts and excess cooling as concerns for ABS and recommends fan off and an enclosed environment; check current material-specific guidance for your printer before applying that older general recommendation.
Rebuild or reinforce a failed prop
If the part has substantial gaps or a layer bond has already failed, correct the print cause and reprint when strength matters. A surface finish or glue applied over the crack may hide it without restoring reliable strength. If the failure is instead between two separately printed sections, prepare the assembly seam as described below.

Strengthen the seam between assembled prop pieces
For a glue joint, begin with mating faces that are clean and fit together smoothly. Light sanding may help, but the need depends on the geometry, surface finish, and adhesive; as Prusa puts it, “The need for sanding will depend on geometry, surface finish, and the type of glue.” See Modeling with 3D printing in mind.
Choose an adhesive for the actual plastic, joint shape, and intended use. The available guidance does not establish a universal glue for all prop filaments or seams. Alignment pegs can help parts locate correctly and add support to the joint when the model allows them. If a joint must carry significant load, do not assume that a smooth cosmetic seam is mechanically sound.

Improve rough surfaces without hiding print faults
Check where the roughness occurs
A bed-contact face is often flatter than a face printed above supports, which can look more inconsistent. If roughness is limited to support-contact areas, the issue may be orientation and support removal rather than a machine fault. Reorienting or splitting a prop to reduce supports can improve appearance and may improve mechanical properties.
Sand only after checking for missing material
For PETG, Prusa notes that wet or dry sanding can be used for finishing. Light sanding can also help prepare some glue interfaces. Avoid sanding first if the area has gaps, thin walls, or fragile sections: investigate extrusion and layer bonding before cosmetic work. The cited guidance does not prescribe a particular grit.

Do not treat chemical smoothing as a casual PETG finishing step. Prusa says dissolving or smoothing PETG with dichloromethane is limited to skilled laboratory workers using dangerous chemicals. For ordinary prop work, use appropriate mechanical finishing and follow the material and tool safety guidance.
Choose the fix by symptom and goal
| Problem | Likely focus | What the fix is meant to improve |
|---|---|---|
| Corners lift from the plate | Profile, surface cleanliness, first-layer calibration, cooling, drafts, brim, or orientation | Bed adhesion and dimensional accuracy |
| Layers split within a part | Temperature, cooling, drafts, nozzle or extruder condition, filament path, and extrusion | Inter-layer strength |
| Separately printed sections pull apart | Fit and preparation of mating faces, suitable adhesive, and alignment features | Assembly strength and alignment |
| Support areas look rough | Part orientation, support placement, and suitable post-print finishing | Appearance |
The right choice also depends on filament, build-sheet material, printer, and slicer profile. Prusa’s pages are official technical guidance, but some are product-family-specific or older; use the manuals and material recommendations for your own setup when settings conflict.
