A Minecraft version mismatch means the game client and server are speaking different protocol versions. “Outdated server!” means your game is newer than the server; “Outdated client!” means your game is older than the server. The reliable fix is to identify the server’s exact version and launch that same version. Server administrators who need to accept several client versions can add ViaVersion and, when needed, ViaBackwards.

What the version mismatch messages mean
Minecraft compares a protocol version during the connection handshake. If the numbers do not match, the server refuses the connection. Release names can occasionally differ while using a compatible protocol, so the protocol check is more important than assuming that every different-looking version label is incompatible.

The direction comes from the wording of the message, not from which side you believe is “right.” A current launcher release is not automatically the correct choice if the server has intentionally stayed on an older release.

Fastest fix for a player
If you do not administer the server, changing your launcher profile is normally the safest solution. It affects only your computer, does not alter the shared world and does not risk plugin or world conversion.
1. Find the server’s exact version
- Look at the server entry in the Multiplayer screen. Some servers expose their software and version in the status text or on hover.
- If the entry does not show a version, ask the operator for the exact release number, including any minor or patch component.
- An operator can check the console with
/versionon server software that supports that command. Ask for the result rather than guessing from the server name.
Write down the server’s version exactly. “The latest 1.x release” is not precise enough when several releases are installed or when the server is running a particular patch.

- Open the official Minecraft Launcher and choose Java Edition.
- Open Installations.
- Either select an existing installation and choose Edit, or choose New installation.
- Open the Version menu and select the exact version supplied by the server operator.
- Save the installation, return to Play, select that profile and launch the game.
Previously downloaded releases remain available in the launcher, so changing profiles normally does not require reinstalling Minecraft. If the requested release is not present, use the launcher’s version list to create the profile and let it download the required files before connecting.

3. Reconnect without changing the server
Close the game after creating the profile, start it from the selected installation and reconnect to the same address. If the operator changed the server while you were switching profiles, ask for the version again; the target may have moved.
For an Outdated client Minecraft message, move forward to the server’s newer version. For an Outdated server Minecraft message, move backward to the server’s older version. Updating just to clear an error can make the mismatch worse.
How an administrator should diagnose the mismatch
Administrators should first decide which version the server is intended to run. A server can be deliberately held on an older release for a stable world or because its plugins have not caught up. The newest client is not automatically the desired target.

Confirm the running server, not just the files on disk
- Check the startup console or the server’s version command and record the exact release.
- Make sure the address players use points to that instance. Multiple test and production servers can have different versions.
- Tell players the exact version and whether they should use vanilla, Paper, Purpur or another required server setup.
- If you recently changed the server, restart it fully and verify the startup output before asking players to test again.
When players still see a mismatch after selecting the advertised release, compare the actual running version with the profile they launched. Two installations with similar names can point to different releases, and a label alone may not reveal a protocol difference.
Allowing several client versions with ViaVersion and ViaBackwards
A server can support a range of client versions without requiring every player to install a client-side mod. The usual approach is a protocol-translation plugin.

Installation workflow
- Stop the server cleanly and make a backup of the world and configuration.
- Obtain plugin builds that support your server software and its running version.
- Place the plugin files in the server’s
pluginsdirectory, following the plugin’s documented installation requirements. - Start the server and inspect the console for successful loading or compatibility errors.
- Connect with a client newer or older than the server, depending on the direction you need, and test ordinary movement, inventory, blocks and commands.
Players do not install ViaVersion or ViaBackwards in their own game for this server-side setup. Translation handles protocol differences, but it cannot manufacture content that the client or server does not know. A player on an older release may see unfamiliar blocks or items incorrectly, fail to interact with them or receive a limited representation. Treat multi-version support as a compatibility convenience, not as a promise that every feature behaves identically.

Should you update the server to match newer clients?
Updating the server can remove the immediate mismatch for players on the newer release, but it is the highest-risk option. A version update can convert a world irreversibly and can break plugins that have not been updated for the target release.

- Make a restorable backup of the complete world, including every dimension and the server configuration.
- List every plugin and confirm that each one supports the target server version.
- Check whether the server software itself supports the target release.
- Schedule downtime and tell players which version will be required afterward.
- Test the update on a copy of the world before touching the live instance.
Safer update sequence
- Stop the live server and create a dated backup that you do not overwrite.
- Copy the world and configuration to a separate test instance.
- Update the test server software and plugins in a controlled order.
- Start the test instance, review warnings and errors, and check key gameplay areas.
- Only after the test succeeds, schedule the live update and keep the old backup available for rollback.
If a plugin fails after the update, restoring the old server and world is safer than repeatedly opening the converted world with incompatible software. Never assume that a successful startup means every plugin or world feature is healthy.

Troubleshooting branches when the error remains
You selected the advertised version but still see “Outdated server!”
- Ask the operator to confirm the version of the process currently listening at the server address.
- Check that the launcher profile points to the version you selected, not a similarly named profile.
- Close and relaunch the game after changing profiles so the new installation is actually running.
- Confirm that the server was not updated or rolled back between the operator’s message and your connection attempt.
You see “Outdated client!” after updating
- The server is newer than the profile you launched; select the server’s newer release exactly.
- Do not infer the required release from the date of the server announcement. Ask for the version number shown by the running server.
- If the server uses a translation plugin, ask the operator which client range it currently supports.
The versions look different, but the error is inconsistent
Release labels are not the whole test. Different release names can share a protocol number, while a seemingly small release change can alter the protocol. Compare the versions reported by the running server and the launcher profile, then let the operator determine whether protocol translation is installed.
The server says “Incompatible client!” instead
Vanilla software may use that wording where other server software says “Outdated client!” or “Outdated server!”. Treat it as a compatibility diagnostic: identify both versions, determine which side is older, and apply the matching player or administrator fix.
How to prevent repeat version mismatch errors
- Publish the exact server version beside the connection address and update it whenever the server changes.
- Keep a tested launcher profile for the server rather than launching whatever profile was used most recently.
- Before updating, check plugin support and test a copy of the world.
- After an update, verify the running version from the console and have one player test before announcing the change.
- If you support multiple versions, document the ViaVersion and ViaBackwards coverage and the features that may not translate.
Version numbers, protocol mappings and plugin compatibility change with each Minecraft release. For that reason, a durable minecraft version mismatch fix is a version check and a controlled change—not a blanket instruction to install the newest game.
