After a Valheim update, first check whether the game, the BepInExPack Valheim loader, and each affected mod support the same game build. Then identify where the failure occurs: the loader may not start, plugins may not load, a plugin may crash the game, or multiplayer versions may not match. Work through those cases separately, and back up your saves and working mod profile before changing files.

Identify which part is failing
Use what you see on launch to choose a path. A game that opens without mods points first to the loader, manager paths, or launch options. A crash during startup calls for isolating plugins. A black screen reported by r2modman has a specific preloader repair in its troubleshooting wiki. A game that works alone but fails in a group calls for checking server and client mod requirements.

These symptoms are useful clues, not guarantees about the cause. 1. Check the game build and affected mod releases
Open the package page for every affected mod and read its release notes. Look for compatibility information about the Valheim build installed on your machine and any required dependencies. A new game patch can make a plugin or its dependency incompatible even if the plugin itself has not changed. A manager showing that a mod is installed does not establish that the installed version supports your current game build.
Check the affected packages individually rather than assuming that all mods in a profile update together. One maintainer may publish a compatible release while another has not yet updated a plugin or its dependency. If release notes do not identify the game build you are using, do not treat silence as confirmation of compatibility. 2. Update the Valheim-specific BepInEx pack when a compatible release is available
Valheim uses a community-configured BepInEx pack, not simply a generic loader installation. The pack includes Valheim-specific configuration and launch scripts. Its README recommends installing through Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager, or r2modman and launching through the manager. Use the pack revision its maintainers identify as compatible with your game build, and install dependencies through the manager when possible. Updating the loader cannot make an outdated or incompatible plugin compatible by itself.
Do not mix installation instructions from the pack with a generic BepInEx setup without checking which files and launch method your profile actually uses. The pack’s instructions describe its own configuration, scripts, and preloader changes. If you install manually, follow the pack’s manual instructions; if a manager controls the profile, use the manager’s supported installation and launch flow. The troubleshooting goal is to make the game, pack, plugins, and dependencies agree—not merely to have a loader folder present.
3. Preserve the distinction between the game and mod versions
Record versions as a set: the Valheim build, pack release, plugin release, and any listed dependency versions. If one mod maintainer has not released a compatible version, the practical options are to leave that plugin disabled while keeping the rest of the profile, or wait for an update. Do not infer compatibility from another mod’s release date or from a different user’s setup: platform, dependencies, and server configuration can differ.
A useful comparison is the exact installed setup against the package requirements: same Valheim build, correct Valheim-configured loader, required dependency versions, and the intended platform and server arrangement. A profile can be internally inconsistent even if every component appears installed. If you cannot confirm that a component supports the current build, record that uncertainty and test with that plugin disabled rather than treating a reinstall as proof of compatibility.

If the game starts but mods do not load
Confirm that BepInEx is starting
With the documented BepInExPack Valheim, Windows should show a BepInEx console when the loader starts. If the game opens without that console, focus on the pack installation and the way the game is launched before reinstalling individual plugins. The pack recommends launching through a supported mod manager; if you installed manually, follow its pack-specific instructions rather than mixing files from a generic BepInEx installation.
This check separates a loader problem from a plugin problem. If BepInEx does not start, moving individual plugins around is unlikely to address the first failure; verify the right pack, game directory, and launch route. If the loader does start but the expected mods do not appear, continue with the manager path and launch-argument checks, then investigate the plugins and their dependencies.
Verify r2modman’s game directory and Steam launch arguments
- In Steam, open Valheim’s local files using the game’s Browse local files option and note the installation directory.
- In r2modman, compare the configured Valheim game directory with the location Steam opened. Correct the manager’s path if it points to a different or old installation.
- Check Valheim’s Steam launch-argument box. Make sure another setting or launcher has not overridden the arguments needed by the modded launch.
- Launch the intended profile through the manager and look for the BepInEx console on Windows. If it still does not start, verify that the correct pack is installed in that profile.
The r2modman troubleshooting wiki documents checking the configured game path against Steam’s local-files path and checking that Steam’s launch arguments have not been overridden. Menu labels can change with manager versions; the key is to compare the actual install path and launch configuration.
If you have more than one Valheim installation, the path comparison is especially important: the manager may be targeting a different installation from the one Steam launches. Do not assume that correcting a path in one profile corrected every profile. Retest the profile you intend to play, and preserve its export before making larger changes.
Check platform-specific launch requirements
The pack documents additional launch steps for Linux and Apple Silicon Macs. These are loader-startup requirements, not evidence that a particular plugin is broken.
- Linux: Make
start_game_bepinex.shexecutable, then use./start_game_bepinex.sh %command%in Steam’s launch options as the pack instructs. - Apple Silicon: The pack states that BepInEx does not run natively on Apple Silicon. Its documented Rosetta launch command is
/usr/bin/arch -x86_64 /bin/bash ./start_game_bepinex.sh %command%. Without thex86_64prefix, the game may start without BepInEx.
Follow the current pack instructions for the exact installation and launch configuration. The commands above apply to the pack’s documented setup; do not assume they apply to another loader or a different installation method.

A crash after a game patch can come from one incompatible plugin or a missing dependency. Rather than reinstalling every mod at once, narrow down the cause with a controlled test.
- Close Valheim and the mod manager.
- In the relevant BepInEx installation, move the contents of
BepInEx/pluginsto a temporary folder outside the game directory. Keep the files so you can restore them. - Start the game with the loader but without those plugins. If it starts cleanly, the problem is likely among the plugins or their dependencies. If it still crashes, investigate the loader installation, launch setup, or another game-level cause instead.
- Restore about half the plugins and test again. If the crash returns, the failing plugin is likely in the half you restored; if it does not, it is likely in the half still removed.
- Repeat the divide-and-test process until you identify the plugin or combination that triggers the failure.
- Check that mod’s release notes and dependency requirements for the installed game build. Leave it disabled until a compatible version is available, then restore the other plugins and retest.
Adding plugins back in halves is more efficient than restoring them one at a time when a profile contains many mods. If a failure only occurs when two plugins are together, test the suspected pair separately; not every conflict is caused by one mod in isolation.

Keep notes as you test: which group was restored, whether the loader appeared to start, and whether the crash returned. If removing all plugins does not produce a clean start, stop focusing on individual mods and check the loader, launch setup, or installation integrity. If the clean start works, restore the unaffected plugins only after confirming that the identified plugin or combination is still disabled. This leaves you with a smaller working profile instead of repeatedly rebuilding it from scratch.
If r2modman shows a black screen
The r2modman troubleshooting wiki documents a profile-specific preloader repair for this symptom:

- Open the affected profile in r2modman.
- Go to Settings → Debugging → Run preloader fix.
- Wait for Steam validation to complete before trying the profile again.
Use this when you have the described r2modman black-screen symptom. It is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a general fix for every crash or every manager. Give Steam validation time to finish; do not interrupt it and then assume the repair failed. If the problem remains, return to the symptom distinctions above rather than applying unrelated workarounds.
If the preloader names a missing unstripped_corlib folder
A third-party Valheim guide reports a workaround for the specific preloader error that explicitly names a missing unstripped_corlib folder: create an empty folder with that name in the Valheim installation directory. Treat this as a reported, symptom-specific workaround, not a standard loader repair. Do not create arbitrary folders for unrelated errors; first confirm the error text and installation directory, then retest. If the message persists, return to the pack’s installation instructions and check the loader setup instead of assuming this workaround applies.
The condition matters: use this only when the preloader error names that missing folder. It is not a general instruction to add files or folders to Valheim’s installation, and it does not establish that a plugin is compatible with a new game build. If you are unsure which installation directory the error refers to, compare it with Steam’s Browse local files location before changing anything.
If the loader installation seems corrupted
When the game path and launch configuration look right but the pack still fails to load, the r2modman wiki documents a recovery sequence involving its download cache and profile export/import. Preserve the profile before trying it.

Use the manager’s current controls and follow its troubleshooting instructions for these operations. This recovery is for a suspected broken installation; it is not a substitute for checking whether the loader or plugins support the current Valheim build.
Exporting first gives you a way to restore the profile’s configuration if rebuilding it does not solve the issue. Do not interpret a successful redownload as proof that every plugin is compatible: after the loader works, check mod releases and dependencies separately. If the export process itself reports a broken BepInEx installation, follow the documented redownload step rather than deleting the whole game folder or starting over without a backup.

When only multiplayer is failing
Do not assume every player needs every mod. Each mod’s package information should say whether it is client-side, server-side, or requires installation on both. The server guide distinguishes client-only mods from server-side mods and notes that some server-side mods may also be required on clients.

- List the mods active on the dedicated server and on each client that cannot join.
- Check each package’s client/server requirements rather than relying on its display name.
- Compare exact versions for mods that must be shared between the server and clients. Matching names alone may not be enough.
- Install server-side mods on the server, and install them on clients too only where that mod’s requirements call for it.
- Retest with the affected clients after correcting the placement or version mismatch.
If solo play succeeds but joining fails, prioritize these server/client checks before removing unrelated client-side mods. If both solo and multiplayer launch fail, return to the loader and plugin troubleshooting paths.
Make the comparison mod by mod rather than telling every player to install the entire server profile. A client-only mod may not belong on the server, while a server-side mod may need to be present there and, depending on its package requirements, on clients as well. Compare the exact versions where the package calls for matching installs; a shared mod name does not guarantee that the server and clients have compatible releases. If only some players cannot join, record their setups separately so a mismatch on one client is not confused with a server-wide loader failure.
Installation and platform constraints to keep in mind
The BepInExPack Valheim README describes the pack as a Valheim-configured community build, with pack-specific configuration, launch scripts, and preloader changes. It recommends manager-based installation through Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager, or r2modman. For manual installation, its instructions say to begin with a clean game folder and extract the pack contents into the Valheim installation directory. Avoid layering an old manual install over a manager-managed setup without checking what files remain.
The community installation guide says its modding instructions assume the Steam version and that Microsoft Store/Game Pass installations are harder to mod; it also says Xbox clients cannot load mods. Those are platform constraints, not proof that a patch broke an otherwise compatible mod. If you use a non-Steam PC install, verify that the pack and manager support that specific setup before applying Steam-specific paths or launch options.
