The iCloud for Windows message “Upgrade to iCloud for Windows failed. Please reboot and try again. (Error 101)” is generally an update or installation-state failure, not a documented diagnosis of one specific fault. After one normal restart, the least disruptive path is to update Windows and Microsoft Store, repair or reset iCloud, clear the Store cache, and then perform a backed-up reinstall from Microsoft Store if necessary.
What Error 101 means
Apple does not publish a precise definition for iCloud for Windows Error 101. Reports place it during upgrades, migration from older installers, startup, and reinstall attempts. Treat it as a generic iCloud installation or upgrade failure rather than proof of a firewall block, Visual C++ problem, or registry fault.

Community reports describe different triggers, including damaged Store state, security software, failed updates, and repeated installations. These reports are useful clues, but they do not establish one universal cause: Microsoft Q&A reports, an Apple Community report, and an older migration discussion show varying circumstances.
Check compatibility before changing the installation
Apple’s current recommended PC configuration is Windows 11, iCloud for Windows 15, and Outlook 2021 or later: Apple’s system requirements. Apple’s installation guidance says iCloud for Windows 11 or later requires Windows updated to at least the May 2019 Update, a Microsoft account, and an Apple Account: Apple installation requirements.

Windows 10 users should check their exact edition, version, and build under Settings > System > About. Do not assume that an older successful installation means the latest iCloud release will install on every Windows 10 system. Outlook 2021 or later mainly affects iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendars integration; it is not automatically required for iCloud Drive or Photos. Managed Apple Accounts are not supported by iCloud for Windows.
Before uninstalling iCloud
- Close iCloud, Microsoft Store, Outlook, and other Apple or synchronization apps.
- Copy files that exist only on the PC to another folder or external drive.
- Open iCloud Drive in File Explorer and make sure important placeholder files are downloaded or otherwise backed up. A cloud icon can mean the file is not stored locally.
- If iCloud still opens, sign out normally and note which services were enabled.
- Identify whether iCloud came from Microsoft Store or an older standalone installer. Store-installed apps normally appear under Settings > Apps > Installed apps and in Store Library.
Signing out stops synchronization and removes iCloud information from that PC, but it does not delete the iCloud account or its data on Apple’s servers. Apple’s precautions are documented in its sign-out and uninstall guide.
Fix 1: Update Windows and Microsoft Store
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart.
- Open Microsoft Store, select Library, then Get updates.
- Let Store updates finish, restart Windows again, and test iCloud.
Microsoft recommends this sequence before repairing or reinstalling Store applications: Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting guidance. If Error 101 returns after this one changed attempt, do not keep clicking the same upgrade prompt.

- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find iCloud, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, then open iCloud and test it.
- If Repair fails, return to the same screen and select Reset.
Repair attempts to fix the app without clearing all app data. Reset is more disruptive: it can remove settings and require you to sign in and configure services again. These controls may be unavailable for a traditional desktop installation. If Error 101 immediately returns after Reset, move on rather than repeating both operations.

Fix 3: Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait while the blank Command Prompt window opens and closes. Microsoft Store should open automatically.
- Restart Windows and retry the iCloud installation or update.
Microsoft documents wsreset.exe as a Store-cache reset. It does not delete personal files, but it cannot repair every Windows installation problem: Microsoft’s wsreset guidance.
Fix 4: Enable Windows media features when they are missing
Apple identifies disabled media components as a possible installation blocker. This is especially relevant to Windows N editions or PCs where media features were manually removed.
- Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Locate Media Features and enable Windows Media Player or the applicable feature.
- Select OK, restart if prompted, and retry iCloud.
If your edition does not include Windows Media Player, install the Media Feature Pack matching your Windows version. This conditional fix is covered by Apple’s installation requirements; it is not necessary on every Error 101 system.

Fix 5: Uninstall and reinstall from Microsoft Store
Windows 11
- Sign out of iCloud if possible and confirm your local backups.
- Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find iCloud, open the three-dot menu, select Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store, search for iCloud, verify that the publisher is Apple, and select Install.
- Sign in and enable only the services you need initially. Test iCloud Drive or Photos before adding Outlook integration.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select iCloud, choose Uninstall, and restart.
- If a separate iCloud Outlook component remains, remove it only when the uninstall process leaves it behind or Apple’s instructions require it.
- Install the Apple-published app from Microsoft Store.
Apple’s current download direction is Microsoft Store: Apple’s iCloud for Windows download page. Avoid unofficial mirrors and “old version” download sites; they create authenticity, malware, tampering, and version-control risks. Uninstalling the app does not erase your cloud account, but it can remove local copies and interrupt unsynchronized changes.

Fix 6: Use Microsoft’s installation troubleshooter when removal is blocked
If a conventional desktop iCloud installation will not uninstall, update, or reinstall, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. It targets damaged uninstall records and registry information. It is primarily for desktop-program installation records, not a substitute for repairing a Microsoft Store package. Identify the installation type first.
Fix 7: Test security-software interference carefully
Anecdotal reports, including one involving ZoneAlarm, say installation completed after a security product was paused. This is not an Apple-confirmed cause and does not mean that ZoneAlarm or another product is inherently incompatible.
- Update your antivirus or firewall product.
- Temporarily pause only its web, firewall, or application-control component.
- Retry the installation once.
- Re-enable protection immediately.
- If the test succeeds, create a narrowly scoped allow rule or ask the security vendor for guidance.
Never leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled as a permanent fix. VPNs, proxies, endpoint controls, and corporate policies can produce similar interference.
Advanced diagnostic: clean boot
A clean boot can isolate startup utilities, overlays, synchronization clients, security tools, or management software that interfere with installation. Use it only when the earlier steps fail. Record what you disable, recognize that company-managed PCs may prohibit the change, and restore services and startup items after testing. If iCloud installs in a clean boot, re-enable items systematically to identify the conflict; a clean boot is not an Error 101-specific repair.

When Error 101 still will not go away
Collect these details before contacting support:
- Exact error text and number, plus whether it occurs during install, launch, update, or migration.
- Windows edition, version, and build.
- iCloud version, if visible.
- Whether the app is Store-installed or a desktop installation.
- Whether Windows Media Player or the Media Feature Pack is enabled.
- Security software, VPN, proxy, and whether the PC is managed by a school or employer.
- Screenshots and any logs Apple or Microsoft specifically requests.
Contact Apple Support for an iCloud-specific clean-install failure. Contact Microsoft when Microsoft Store, Windows Update, or program-installation components themselves are failing. On a managed PC, involve the organization’s IT administrator because Store restrictions and application-control policy may be decisive.

Frequently asked questions
Does Error 101 mean my iCloud data is lost?
No. The error concerns the Windows installation or upgrade state. The danger is losing local copies or unsynchronized changes during sign-out or uninstall, so back up first.
Should I uninstall iTunes too?
Not as a routine Error 101 step. Remove only the iCloud components involved in the failed installation unless Apple or Microsoft support identifies another conflicting component.
Is iCloud for Windows compatible with Windows 10?
Compatibility depends on the Windows build and iCloud release. Apple’s current recommended configuration emphasizes Windows 11; Windows 10 users should verify their exact requirements rather than assume the latest package will install.

Do I need Outlook?
Outlook 2021 or later is part of Apple’s current recommended setup for Outlook-based Mail, Contacts, and Calendars integration. iCloud Drive and Photos do not automatically require Outlook.
Can I download iCloud from another website?
Use Microsoft Store and verify Apple as the publisher. Unofficial mirrors are not a safe normal workaround.
Will wsreset.exe delete my files?
No. It resets Microsoft Store’s cache, not your personal files or iCloud data.

Do not disable it as a default fix. If security interference is suspected, use a brief, controlled test only where your security policy permits, then immediately restore protection.
Why does iCloud work until the next Windows update?
Some users report that pattern, but it is anecdotal and does not prove a specific Windows-update bug. Record the update, iCloud version, and installation type and provide those details to support.
