If an Unreal Engine 5 game starts stuttering after an update, shader or graphics-pipeline compilation is one possible cause—not a diagnosis. First-use hitches that fade when you revisit an effect or area fit a cache warm-up pattern; stutter that repeats everywhere or persists after relaunch calls for broader, game-specific checks.
Why an update can cause stuttering
Unreal Engine shader compilation can create bursts of processing that appear as momentary frame hitches. Pipeline State Object (PSO) precaching and caching aim to prepare graphics states before they are needed, reducing runtime compilation stalls. Epic’s UE 5.8 performance guidance and PSO precaching documentation describe these behaviors. Game updates can change content or rendering code, and Epic notes that a PSO cache may need updating after such changes in its bundled PSO-cache guidance.

That timing alone does not show that shaders are responsible. A game may also have an update-specific issue, damaged or missing files, a driver change, or behavior tied to its graphics API or system. The right fix depends on the game, storefront, operating system, GPU, and update.

Identify the stutter pattern before changing anything
Note when and where the hitch occurs, then repeat the same activity if practical. This is a useful clue, not proof of a cause.

- Every time: If the same scene stutters on repeated visits or after relaunch, investigate beyond a one-time warm-up.
- Across the game: Hitches in unrelated areas, or a problem that began after a driver update rather than a game-content update, are details to include in game-specific support requests.
Try these checks in order
1. Let explicit shader preparation finish
If the game displays a shader-compilation or preparation stage, allow it to complete before judging performance. Epic Player Support says Fortnite’s first match can still stutter while the client compiles new shaders. That is Fortnite-specific guidance, not a guaranteed behavior or waiting time for every UE5 game.
2. Clear a shader cache only when the instructions fit your game
Cache deletion is not a universal post-update fix: it removes prepared data that then has to be rebuilt. Avoid repeatedly clearing caches as a routine response.

Epic’s Fortnite support article addresses a particular DirectX 12 issue involving repeated DirectX shader recompilation. It says clearing the shader cache may help and instructs players to close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher first. Use that procedure only if you have the matching Fortnite issue and follow the current article’s steps.

3. Verify installed files if you use Steam
If missing or damaged game files are plausible, Steam provides a file check. In the Steam client, open Library, right-click the game and choose Properties, then select Installed Files and Verify integrity of game files. Steam notes that some files may fail verification normally because they are local configuration files. This checks the installation; it is not a direct shader-stutter fix.
4. Gather details if the stutter continues
Contact the game’s support team with information that can distinguish a game-specific issue from a warm-up pattern:

- Game name, build or version, and storefront
- Operating system, GPU model, and GPU driver version
- Graphics API, such as DirectX 11, DirectX 12, or Vulkan, if known
- Whether shader preparation completes and whether the same hitch returns after revisiting a scene or relaunching
- What changed immediately before the problem: game content, engine update, or GPU driver
Epic’s developer guidance recommends checking supported graphics APIs and cache activity, then correlating new PSO events with reported hitches; when PSO evidence is absent, it points to CPU profiling. Those are developer diagnostics and may not be available to players.

- A post-update start does not by itself prove that shader compilation is the cause.
