How to Fix Unexpected NameDrop or AirDrop Prompts on iPhone

NameDrop and AirDrop prompts have different causes and controls. Follow the exact Settings and Control Center steps to stop proximity contact-sharing alerts, restrict incoming files and fix common transfer problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unexpected proximity prompts on an iPhone usually come from one of two different features. NameDrop appears when compatible devices are brought close together and offers to exchange selected contact details. An AirDrop alert appears when someone—or one of your own devices—attempts to send a photo, file, link or another item. Turn off Settings > General > AirDrop > Bring Devices Together to stop NameDrop. For incoming AirDrop items, change the receiving setting in Control Center to Contacts Only or Receiving Off. These controls are separate, so changing one does not necessarily stop the other.

Identify which prompt you are seeing

Look at the wording and what was happening immediately before the alert. The fastest fix depends on whether the trigger was physical proximity or an attempted item transfer.

NameDrop is enabled by default on compatible software. It does not mean that a transfer has already happened: you can cancel before sharing. AirDrop prompts, by contrast, indicate an item-transfer request or a transfer between your own devices.

Stop NameDrop from appearing when devices touch

Turn off Bring Devices Together

  1. Open Settings on the iPhone.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap AirDrop.
  4. Turn off Bring Devices Together.

Apple describes this switch as the control for NameDrop and other Bring Devices Together features. Disabling it prevents the proximity-based NameDrop interface on that iPhone. The exact wording can vary slightly after an iOS update, so use the AirDrop page under General if the layout looks different.

This is an iPhone-wide preference for that device, not a one-time dismissal. If you use several iPhones or an Apple Watch, check the setting on each device where you do not want the proximity interface. Turning it off does not remove your contact card, disable ordinary AirDrop, or prevent you from sending a file manually.

Cancel a prompt that is already on screen

If two devices have just been brought together and the NameDrop interface is visible, move them apart or lock the iPhone before the exchange is completed. Apple lists both actions as ways to cancel. You do not need to accept the exchange simply because the screen appeared.

Check the setting after changing it

Return to Settings > General > AirDrop and confirm that Bring Devices Together remains off. If another alert then appears asking to accept a photo or file, that is not NameDrop; use the AirDrop receiving controls described below. Turning off proximity sharing does not turn off all AirDrop transfers.

Control unexpected incoming AirDrop requests

Change AirDrop receiving access from Control Center

  1. Open Control Center. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the top-right corner. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge.
  2. Touch and hold the panel containing the network controls.
  3. Tap AirDrop.
  4. Select the setting that fits your situation: Receiving Off, Contacts Only, or Everyone for 10 Minutes, where those choices are shown.

Receiving Off blocks inbound AirDrop requests. Contacts Only allows requests from people whose Apple Account contact information is recognized in your Contacts. It is the practical default for many people who still want to receive items from known contacts. Everyone for 10 Minutes temporarily broadens discovery when you deliberately need to receive from someone who is not in your contacts.

Use the narrowest setting that matches your routine. If you never receive files, Receiving Off removes the inbound invitation entirely. If you share regularly with family, classmates or coworkers, Contacts Only avoids repeatedly opening a public discovery window. Everyone for 10 Minutes is best treated as a temporary exception rather than a permanent setting.

Understand the ten-minute setting

Apple says Everyone for 10 Minutes reverts automatically after ten minutes. When you are signed in to an Apple Account, it reverts to Contacts Only; when you are not signed in, it reverts to Receiving Off. This automatic reset is why a setting can appear to change without you touching it. If you want the narrowest exposure, choose Receiving Off after a one-time transfer or leave Contacts Only enabled.

Use the right setting for a file-transfer banner

If the alert names a photo, document, web link or another item, adjust AirDrop receiving rather than Bring Devices Together. Declining one request does not change your future receiving policy. Conversely, turning off Bring Devices Together will not stop a person from sending an item when your AirDrop receiving setting permits it.

A rejected request also does not indicate that the sender gained access to your files. AirDrop is an invitation-based transfer: an item is not saved merely because a banner appeared. If you do not recognize the sender, decline the request and set Receiving Off or Contacts Only before continuing to use the phone.

Current protection for noncontacts

Apple’s current AirDrop guidance describes an AirDrop code requirement for transfers from noncontacts on iOS 26.2 or later. This is version-specific: check the iOS version installed on the iPhone before expecting that additional step. It is an inbound-transfer protection and is separate from the NameDrop switch.

Why a request from your own device may be accepted automatically

AirDrop behaves differently when the sending and receiving devices are signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple says a transfer between those devices is automatically accepted and saved, so an iPhone, iPad or Mac that belongs to you may not show the usual approval prompt. The absence of a prompt is therefore not evidence that someone bypassed your settings.

When a transfer from your own device behaves unexpectedly, verify that both devices use the Apple Account you intended. Then check the receiving setting on the iPhone and the sender’s AirDrop destination. If you do not want automatic transfers, disable AirDrop receiving on the receiving device when you are not using it. This is an AirDrop policy choice; it does not change the NameDrop proximity setting.

Check the destination carefully when several Apple devices are nearby. A Mac, iPad or older iPhone signed into the same account may be selected unintentionally, while a device belonging to another person will follow its own receiving policy. Reviewing the sender and recipient names before tapping Share can prevent confusion about where an item was saved.

Troubleshoot prompts that continue or transfers that fail

1. Decide whether the symptom is proximity or an item request

First reproduce the context without accepting anything. A prompt that requires phones to be close together points to NameDrop. A prompt that identifies an item, sender or acceptance action points to AirDrop. Apply only the relevant setting so that you do not trade one behavior for another.

2. Recheck the receiving setting on the iPhone

Open Control Center and inspect AirDrop. If it is set to Everyone for 10 Minutes, remember that the choice is temporary. Set Contacts Only or Receiving Off, then test again with the sender device out of range. If the sender is not in Contacts, Contacts Only will normally prevent the request from being offered.

If a known contact cannot send to you, confirm that the contact card contains the Apple Account email address or phone number the sender actually uses. A contact saved only under a nickname or an unrelated address may not be recognized for Contacts Only. Temporarily selecting Everyone for 10 Minutes can isolate a contact-recognition problem, after which you can return to Contacts Only.

3. Turn off Personal Hotspot

Apple lists an active Personal Hotspot as a possible interference when AirDrop is not working. Open Settings, select Personal Hotspot, and turn off Allow Others to Join while you test AirDrop. Reopen Control Center and retry the transfer after the hotspot is disconnected.

4. Check Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices

AirDrop relies on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth being enabled on the sending and receiving devices. Check the controls on both devices rather than only the iPhone. If either radio was disabled, enable it and retry. Keep the devices reasonably close while testing, but do not bring them together in a way that intentionally triggers NameDrop if Bring Devices Together is still enabled.

5. Restart the devices

Apple’s basic troubleshooting guidance includes restarting the device. Restart the iPhone and, if possible, the sending iPhone, iPad or Mac. After startup, verify the AirDrop receiving setting again because temporary sharing modes may have expired, then attempt a small test transfer.

6. Check software and compatibility

NameDrop is available only on compatible software and hardware. If the option or prompt is missing, or appears on one device but not another, compare the versions and models listed in the compatibility section below. A device that cannot support NameDrop will not show the same proximity behavior, even when another nearby device can.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Separate the two devices during testing

Keep the phones apart while changing settings and restart one at a time. This prevents a proximity event from being mistaken for an AirDrop item request. Once Bring Devices Together is off, a later banner about a file should be diagnosed as AirDrop rather than as a failed NameDrop change.

8. Escalate only after the documented basics

Apple’s reviewed guidance does not identify a special hardware repair for persistent NameDrop or AirDrop prompts. If Bring Devices Together is off, AirDrop receiving is restricted, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled, Personal Hotspot is disconnected and the devices have been restarted, contact Apple Support with the iPhone model, iOS version and the exact wording of the alert. Those details help distinguish a software-setting issue from an unrelated notification.

NameDrop compatibility and version requirements

NameDrop requires iOS 17.1 or later on both iPhones. When an Apple Watch is involved, Apple requires watchOS 10.1 or later. Apple lists the Apple Watch SE (second generation), Apple Watch Series 7 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra models as supported. The iPhone and watch must also be paired in a way that supports the feature.

These requirements explain several apparently inconsistent cases:

Compatibility affects whether NameDrop can appear. It does not alter the separate AirDrop receiving choices for sending photos, files and links.

What NameDrop actually shares

NameDrop does not send an entire contact card automatically. Apple says the exchange can include your name, the phone number or email address you select, and information from your Contact Poster. Details such as a home address and birthday are examples of information that are not shared as part of the NameDrop exchange.

Review your contact card before using NameDrop

  1. Open the Contacts app.
  2. Tap My Card.
  3. Tap Edit and review the phone numbers, email addresses and other details stored there.
  4. Remove or correct information you do not want associated with the card.

When the NameDrop interface appears, review the fields it offers before choosing to share or receive. The feature is enabled by default, but the exchange still requires your choice at the prompt. Moving the devices apart or locking the iPhone cancels an in-progress exchange.

Because Contact Poster information is part of the exchange, review that poster as well as your phone and email fields. A polished poster can still contain an unwanted image or display name. Editing My Card changes what is available for future sharing; it does not retroactively alter information someone already received.

Privacy decisions for common situations

You never use AirDrop

Set AirDrop receiving to Receiving Off and turn off Bring Devices Together. This addresses both broad inbound item requests and proximity-based NameDrop prompts.

You use AirDrop with family or colleagues

Leave receiving on Contacts Only, keep the relevant people in Contacts, and use Everyone for 10 Minutes only when you need a temporary exception. Remember that the temporary setting expires automatically.

You occasionally exchange files with unknown contacts

Turn on Everyone for 10 Minutes immediately before the exchange, complete the transfer, and then allow the setting to revert or select Receiving Off. On iOS 26.2 or later, be prepared for the version-specific AirDrop code requirement when the sender is not a contact.

You are worried that merely passing someone caused a data leak

A NameDrop screen is an offer to exchange selected information, not proof that the exchange completed. Cancel it by separating the devices or locking the iPhone, then disable Bring Devices Together if you do not want future proximity prompts. A separate AirDrop banner means an item request and should be handled with the receiving setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You share a phone with a child or family member

Explain the difference between a contact-sharing offer and a file request, then choose settings together. Receiving Off is simplest for a rarely used device. If Contacts Only is appropriate, periodically review My Card so an outdated number, email address or Contact Poster is not offered unexpectedly.

A concise decision checklist

  • Phones or a watch touch and a contact-sharing screen appears: cancel by moving apart or locking the iPhone, then go to Settings > General > AirDrop and turn off Bring Devices Together.
  • A photo, file or link request appears: open Control Center > AirDrop and choose Contacts Only or Receiving Off.
  • Your own iPad or Mac transfers without asking: check whether both devices use the same Apple Account; Apple says those transfers are automatically accepted and saved.
  • The transfer fails: verify Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices, disconnect Personal Hotspot, confirm the receiving setting and restart the devices.
  • NameDrop is absent or inconsistent: verify iOS 17.1 or later on both iPhones, or watchOS 10.1 or later and a supported Apple Watch model.
  • The prompt continues after all checks: record the exact alert, device models and software versions before contacting Apple Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone get my full contact card just by bringing a phone near mine?

No. NameDrop offers selected information: your name, the phone number or email address you choose, and Contact Poster information. Apple gives a home address and birthday as examples of details that are not shared. Review the fields on the NameDrop screen and edit Contacts > My Card > Edit before accepting.

How do I stop NameDrop without turning off AirDrop completely?

Go to Settings > General > AirDrop and turn off Bring Devices Together. This stops proximity-based NameDrop and other Bring Devices Together features while leaving ordinary AirDrop receiving available under its separate setting.

Why did my iPhone ask me to accept a photo after I disabled NameDrop?

The alert was an AirDrop item request, not NameDrop. Open Control Center, touch and hold the network panel, tap AirDrop, and choose Contacts Only or Receiving Off. Disabling Bring Devices Together does not block file transfers.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Why did AirDrop from my Mac arrive without an approval prompt?

Transfers between devices signed in to the same Apple Account are automatically accepted and saved, according to Apple. Check the account on both devices and review the receiving setting if you do not want those automatic transfers.

What should I choose: Contacts Only or Receiving Off?

Choose Contacts Only if you regularly receive items from people already represented correctly in your Contacts. Choose Receiving Off if you do not use AirDrop or want no inbound requests. Everyone for 10 Minutes is a temporary option for a deliberate transfer from a noncontact.

Why does Everyone for 10 Minutes keep changing back?

That setting is designed to expire after ten minutes. Apple says it returns to Contacts Only when you are signed in to an Apple Account, or to Receiving Off when you are not signed in.

What if AirDrop still does not work after changing the setting?

Check Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices, disconnect Personal Hotspot, confirm the recipient’s receiving setting, and restart the devices. If the problem persists, note the exact alert, models and software versions before contacting Apple Support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which devices support NameDrop?

Both iPhones need iOS 17.1 or later. With an Apple Watch, watchOS 10.1 or later is required; supported models include Apple Watch SE (second generation), Apple Watch Series 7 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra models.

The Bottom Line

NameDrop and AirDrop are related sharing features with different triggers and controls. For a proximity contact-sharing prompt, cancel by moving the devices apart or locking the iPhone, then disable Bring Devices Together at Settings > General > AirDrop. For a photo, file or link request, change AirDrop receiving in Control Center to Contacts Only or Receiving Off. If transfers fail, check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Personal Hotspot, account settings and device compatibility before contacting Apple Support.
