If your iPhone says “Unable to Check for Update,” first check that your model supports the iOS version offered, that you have enough free storage, and that the phone can reach the internet. Retry on your current network, then try another. If the alert persists, update with a Mac or iTunes, or delete and redownload the update. The alert alone does not identify the cause.
What the alert means
Apple lists the alert “Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update” among messages that can appear when an iPhone or iPad cannot reach the update server or verify an update. It can also relate to compatibility, insufficient storage, a slow download, or an update that does not complete. The message does not tell you which issue applies to your iPhone. Work through these checks in order
1. Confirm your iPhone supports the update
Find your iPhone model in Settings > General > About, then compare it with Apple’s compatible-device list for the iOS release you are trying to install. If the model is not supported, that iOS version cannot be installed on it.

Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If space is tight, Apple says you can offload unused apps to free space without deleting their personal information, or delete apps manually. Return to Software Update after making room.

3. Retry the network connection
Try checking for the update again on the same network. If the alert remains, connect to another network and retry. Apple recommends Wi-Fi for faster downloads and advises avoiding other downloads while updating. The alert by itself does not prove that Apple’s servers are down or that your router is faulty.
4. Remove a downloaded update and download it again
After repeated attempts on multiple networks, check Settings > General > iPhone Storage for the iOS update. Tap it, choose Delete Update, then open Settings > General > Software Update and download it again. If the update is not listed, or the error returns, try updating with a computer.

Choose a wireless update or a computer
Apple supports updating wirelessly or using a Mac or iTunes. Use the wireless route if another network works and the iPhone has enough storage. If network retries fail or the download problem keeps recurring, use the computer route. A computer must be available and recognize the iPhone; Apple does not claim that one route is universally faster or more reliable.

Know when to use recovery-mode guidance
Keep the iPhone connected to power while an update installs. If a computer does not recognize the iPhone, or the Apple logo stays on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, follow Apple’s recovery-mode instructions. These symptoms call for a different next step than another routine network retry.
