What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If Ubuntu stops at a line such as /dev/sda1: clean, 552599/6111232 files, 7119295/24414464 blocks, the word “clean” is not an error code—and it does not mean the whole computer has finished booting. It reports a filesystem-check result for one partition. First determine whether Ubuntu is still starting or has stalled; only run a filesystem repair if evidence points to filesystem trouble, and never run e2fsck on a mounted filesystem.
What the “clean, files, blocks” message means
The line identifies a partition and reports the result of a filesystem check. “Files” and “blocks” are counts, not error codes. A clean result means that check did not report filesystem errors requiring repair; it does not certify that Ubuntu’s display manager, graphics stack, or later boot stages are working.

Filesystem checks can be part of ordinary startup. Ubuntu’s Jammy systemd-fsck documentation describes checks for filesystems configured in /etc/fstab. The filesystem-specific checker can decide whether a check is needed based on factors such as time since the last check, mount count, or an unclean unmount. A failed check can send the system to emergency mode, but seeing a clean line alone does not establish that the disk is failing.

Ubuntu’s Jammy e2fsck manual covers ext2, ext3, and ext4 filesystems and warns: “Note that in general it is not safe to run e2fsck on mounted file systems.” These manual details refer to Ubuntu Jammy; menus and boot behavior can differ by release and hardware.

Start by checking whether boot is actually stuck
Wait briefly and observe the next result rather than treating the clean line as the diagnosis. Does the login screen appear, does the display go blank, is an emergency-mode message shown, or can you reach a text login? Note any new messages and whether the problem began after an update or graphics-driver change.
If the display remains blank, try Ctrl+Alt+F2 to switch to a virtual terminal (TTY) and sign in. The key combination can vary by hardware and configuration. If a TTY works, the system has progressed beyond the filesystem status line; investigate the graphical login or the specific boot error rather than repeatedly forcing filesystem checks.

- UBUNTU 24.04.3 LTS MEDIA - 16GB bootable USB with Ubuntu Desktop 24.04.3 LTS for compatible x86-64 PCs.
- LIVE OR INSTALL - On supported hardware, start the Ubuntu live environment to evaluate it or launch the installer.
- PLATFORM BOUNDARY - Not designed to boot Apple Silicon or other ARM-based computers. Confirm CPU architecture and USB-boot support before purchase.
- BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
- BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.
Choose a recovery path based on access and evidence
| Path | When to use it | Filesystem check conditions | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| GRUB recovery mode | When the GRUB menu and a recovery-mode entry are available. | Use the recovery workflow to check the filesystem; do not assume the installed root filesystem is unmounted in every shell. | Offers recovery tools and may expose a root shell or boot-stage errors. |
| Ubuntu live USB | When installed recovery is unavailable or cannot provide a safe offline check. | Identify the target partition and ensure it is unmounted before using an appropriate checker. | Provides an alternate environment to inspect partitions and run an offline check. |
| TTY and boot logs | When filesystem checks are clean but graphical startup does not appear, or a TTY is accessible. | Not an offline filesystem repair path. | Helps identify a failed login/display service, graphics issue, or another later boot-stage failure. |
Use GRUB recovery mode when it is available
- Restart and open the GRUB menu. On many systems, holding Shift or pressing Esc during startup may reveal it, but the method varies.
- Choose Advanced options for Ubuntu, then select an entry marked (recovery mode).
- Use the recovery menu’s filesystem-check option if available, or its root shell only after confirming the filesystem’s mount state and type.
- Do not confuse clean in the recovery menu with filesystem repair: that option frees disk space. Filesystem checking is a separate operation.
Use live media if recovery cannot provide an offline check
- Boot an Ubuntu live USB and choose the option to try Ubuntu, if offered by that release.
- Identify the Linux filesystem partition before checking it. Device names may look like
/dev/sdaXor/dev/nvme0n1pX; do not guess. A partition utility orblkidcan help identify device names and filesystem types. - Confirm the target partition is not mounted. For ext2, ext3, or ext4, use
e2fsckonly on the correct, unmounted partition. Use the filesystem’s appropriate checker if it is not an ext-family filesystem. - Allow the check to finish. If it reports corrections, follow the tool or recovery workflow’s directions, then reboot and assess the result.
Do not copy a command that checks / without confirming what that path refers to and whether it is mounted. The official e2fsck manual says results are invalid when the filesystem is mounted; if asked whether to check a mounted filesystem, answer no. Avoid adding -y to an unfamiliar command: it automatically approves repairs rather than letting you review each prompt.
If the filesystem is clean, investigate the next failing boot stage
A clean offline check that leaves the symptom unchanged is a reason to look beyond filesystem repair. Community reports describe several possible causes, including graphics or display-manager problems and low disk space, but those reports do not identify the cause on a particular computer.

- Support: Print user guide and support available. please contact us for help if you have an issue.
- Live USB or install: You can either try on USB or install on hard drive.
- If a TTY or recovery shell works, look for an explicit failed service or boot error in the messages available there.
- Consider whether a graphics-driver or system update immediately preceded the problem, but do not change drivers solely because the screen is blank.
- Check for low disk space if you can log in through a TTY or recovery environment.
- Review mount or device configuration only when an error points there; do not edit
/etc/fstabor suppress filesystem checks as a first-line workaround. - Record the Ubuntu version, hardware, exact last messages, and relevant boot-log errors before pursuing a driver change or hardware diagnosis.
If filesystem errors return, or there are separate hardware warning signs, preserve important data and pursue storage diagnostics. The clean status line by itself is not evidence that a drive needs replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to stop and get more specific help
Seek help with the exact error text and relevant logs if the check reports recurring errors, the machine enters emergency mode, or the system still cannot boot after a successful offline check. Include the Ubuntu release, whether recovery mode or a TTY is reachable, the filesystem type and partition checked, and any changes that preceded the failure. Those details distinguish a filesystem problem from a later startup or display failure far better than the clean line alone.
