How to Fix Touchscreen Problems on a Windows Laptop

Restart Windows, install available updates, and check whether the touchscreen is disabled in Device Manager. For persistent faults, use support guidance for your exact laptop model; Surface diagnostics are not universal.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your Windows laptop’s touchscreen is unresponsive or behaving incorrectly, restart the laptop, install available Windows updates, then check Device Manager to see whether the touchscreen is disabled. If those steps do not help, follow support instructions for your exact laptop model. Microsoft’s UEFI and driver-reinstallation guidance applies to Surface devices, not to every Windows laptop.

Start with the checks that apply to most Windows laptops

Try these steps in order. They begin with general Windows troubleshooting and do not assume that your laptop uses Surface hardware or drivers. After each step, test touch again. If the problem changes, note what changed; if it does not, move on. These checks are a starting sequence, not a guarantee that every touchscreen fault can be fixed in Windows.

1. Restart the laptop

Save your work, then restart Windows. A restart is Microsoft’s first general recommendation when touch is unresponsive or incorrect. After Windows starts again, test the touchscreen in more than one place, such as the desktop and a built-in Windows screen. This helps establish whether touch is still failing, though it does not identify the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay attention to the specific behavior: whether no touch registers, only part of the screen responds, or touch registers inaccurately. This information is useful if you need to contact the manufacturer. A successful restart is a useful first result, but it does not establish what caused the problem or whether it will recur.

2. Install Windows updates

Microsoft recommends checking for updates, including optional updates when available. The paths differ by Windows version. Follow the path for the version running on your laptop:

  • Windows 11: Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options. Turn on updates for other Microsoft products, then install available optional updates. Return to Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install available updates. Restart after installation, even if Windows does not ask you to.
  • Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Check for and install available updates, including optional updates when offered, then restart.

Optional updates are worth checking because Microsoft includes that check in its troubleshooting guidance. Do not assume that every offered update will fix a touchscreen problem; the point is to bring Windows up to date before moving to model-specific diagnostics. After installing the updates and restarting, test the same screen areas and interactions that failed before.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after that date it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A PC running Windows 10 can still work, but it no longer receives that support; Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. Availability of an upgrade depends on the PC and its compatibility. The end of support does not by itself show that an unresponsive touchscreen is caused by Windows 10, and an upgrade should not be treated as a guaranteed touchscreen repair.

3. Check whether Windows has disabled the touchscreen

The touchscreen may appear in Device Manager but be disabled. To check:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Human Interface Devices.
  3. Look for HID-compliant touch screen.
  4. If the entry is present and disabled, select it and choose Enable device.
  5. If there is more than one touchscreen entry, repeat the check for each one.

If the touchscreen entry is already enabled, do not disable it as a test. If it is missing, or enabling it does not restore touch, continue with support for your laptop’s manufacturer and model rather than installing a driver intended for another device. The Device Manager check answers a narrow question—whether Windows lists the touchscreen and whether it is disabled. A listed, enabled entry does not prove that the screen is working correctly, and a missing entry is not a reason to guess at a driver.

Choose the next step based on your laptop and symptoms

After the general checks, the useful next question is whether your device is a Surface or another brand of Windows laptop. Microsoft’s detailed UEFI and driver guidance in this area is Surface-specific; it should not be treated as a generic procedure for all Windows PCs. The manufacturer, exact model, and the result of the basic checks determine which instructions apply.

What you find What to do next
The touchscreen entry is disabled in Device Manager Enable each listed touchscreen entry, then test touch again.
The touchscreen entry is present and already enabled Do not toggle it off and on as an experiment. Complete updates if you have not already, then use the laptop maker’s support instructions.
The touchscreen entry is missing Do not install a Surface driver or a driver chosen for a different model. Ask the manufacturer for model-specific guidance.
The laptop is a Surface Use Microsoft’s Surface touchscreen troubleshooting guidance, including its Surface-specific UEFI test and driver instructions.
The laptop is not a Surface Consult the laptop manufacturer’s support guidance for the exact model; do not assume Surface driver names or diagnostic steps apply.
Touch still fails after the general Windows checks Ask the manufacturer about model-appropriate diagnostics and service. A persistent fault may require repair.

This is a practical way to choose among the next options: first establish whether Windows lists a touchscreen and whether it is enabled; then use only diagnostics the maker supports for your device. If the maker offers an independent diagnostic, follow that maker’s instructions. Microsoft’s UEFI distinction below is documented for Surface, not as a general test for every laptop.

For Surface only: use UEFI to help distinguish Windows from hardware

Microsoft recommends testing touch in UEFI on Surface devices. UEFI is a diagnostic environment separate from the normal Windows session. If touch works there, Microsoft says, “the issue probably involves Windows or the touch driver.” If touch does not work in UEFI, Microsoft says hardware failure is likely and recommends service.

The result helps direct the next step; it is not a universal diagnosis or a promise that a particular repair will solve the problem. Touch working in UEFI points toward investigating Windows or the touch driver under Microsoft’s Surface guidance. Touch failing there makes hardware service the appropriate path in that guidance. If you do not own a Surface, do not try to reproduce a Surface-specific button sequence or assume your laptop has an equivalent UEFI touch test. Use the manufacturer’s own model-specific diagnostic instructions instead.

Surface-specific symptoms and later steps

The following advice comes from Microsoft’s Surface touchscreen guidance. Apply it only to Surface models covered by that guidance. It is not a substitute for the laptop maker’s instructions for another brand.

Inaccurate touch or areas that do not respond

Microsoft says inaccurate touch, or failure across some or all of the screen, can warrant service. If the problem continues after the relevant Surface checks, contact Microsoft or an authorized service provider about diagnosis and repair. Whether service is covered depends on the device, warranty, location, and diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When describing the symptom, be specific about whether the whole screen fails or only part of it, and whether touches land in the wrong place. Those details help explain why you are seeking service, but do not attempt to infer the failed component yourself. The right diagnosis and repair depend on the particular device.

Phantom or “ghost” touches

If the Surface registers touches you are not making, Microsoft identifies nearby electronic interference as one possible factor. As an initial check, move the Surface or nearby electronic equipment and see whether the symptom changes. This is a check for a possible environmental influence, not proof that the screen is healthy or that interference is the cause.

If moving equipment makes no difference, continue with the Surface guidance rather than repeatedly relocating devices or concluding that the screen must be defective. Ghost touches can be described to support as a distinct symptom from touch that simply fails to register.

Slow response

Slow touch response may reflect the Surface’s overall performance rather than a touchscreen fault. If the whole device is sluggish, consider whether general performance problems are affecting what feels like touch delay; do not assume the touch hardware itself is responsible based on slowness alone. This distinction matters when you explain the problem: report whether the device as a whole feels slow or whether only touch input is delayed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstalling Surface touch drivers

Microsoft’s Surface guidance covers reinstalling the Intel Precise Touch Device and HID-compliant touch screen entries, then scanning for hardware changes. It also directs Surface owners to check Surface and Windows updates through the Surface app. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the specific supported Surface model rather than improvising driver removal steps on another laptop.

These names and actions are not general instructions for every Windows laptop. Do not remove driver entries from a non-Surface device just because they sound similar; use the model-specific process from its manufacturer. On a supported Surface, follow the sequence Microsoft documents, including scanning for hardware changes, and then check updates as directed. If you are unsure whether your model is covered, confirm that before uninstalling anything.

Microsoft warns that Surface Pro X owners should not uninstall drivers: a full system reset is the only way to restore them. Treat a reset as a later option, not a first troubleshooting step. Back up important files before resetting, and confirm the model-specific instructions and recovery options first. Resetting is not part of the general Windows first-line sequence and should not be substituted for the restart, update, and Device Manager checks.

When to contact the manufacturer or arrange service

If restarting, updating Windows, and checking Device Manager do not resolve the issue, Microsoft directs owners of non-Surface PCs to the device manufacturer. Provide the exact model and explain what you have already checked. Ask whether the maker has a diagnostic for that model and whether it recommends service. For Surface devices, use Microsoft’s Surface guidance and service options where its tests indicate they are appropriate.

  • Persistent failure: If touch remains unavailable after the general Windows checks, a manufacturer diagnostic can help determine whether service is needed.
  • Possible hardware fault: On a Surface, failure of the UEFI touch test points toward likely hardware failure under Microsoft’s guidance. For other models, rely on the manufacturer’s diagnostic and service advice.
  • Before reset or repair: Back up important files before a system reset or a repair decision. Check warranty coverage and authorized service options with the manufacturer; eligibility depends on the device and your location.

When you request help, include the Windows version, the laptop’s exact model, whether the touchscreen entry appears in Device Manager and is enabled, which general steps you tried, and what the screen does now. If you own a Surface and used the Surface UEFI check, report whether touch worked there. These details help support choose the right next diagnostic instead of repeating steps that have already failed.

A mouse can provide temporary input while you troubleshoot, but it does not repair the touchscreen. There is no universal physical product established as a fix for the different causes of touchscreen trouble. Avoid buying a replacement screen or repair kit before the exact model and fault have been diagnosed: the appropriate part and repair path depend on the laptop. If service is needed, use a manufacturer-authorized option where appropriate and check warranty and location-specific terms; cost and coverage depend on the device and diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Windows laptop touchscreen not working?

The general checks supported by Microsoft are to restart Windows, install available updates, and check whether a listed HID-compliant touchscreen is disabled in Device Manager. If those steps do not help, the cause may need model-specific diagnostics from the manufacturer. Do not assume the fault is hardware or software based only on the initial symptom.

What should I do if HID-compliant touch screen is missing?

Use the support path for your laptop’s exact manufacturer and model. Microsoft’s general guidance covers checking and enabling a listed entry; it does not justify installing a Surface driver or another model’s driver on a different laptop. Ask the maker whether it has an appropriate diagnostic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I test touchscreen function in UEFI?

Microsoft’s cited UEFI touch test is for Surface devices. It can help distinguish a likely Windows or touch-driver issue from likely hardware failure on Surface under Microsoft’s guidance. Do not treat Surface-specific instructions as universal; for another laptop, follow that manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.

Does Windows 10 end of support mean I need a new laptop?

No. Microsoft says a Windows 10 PC can still work, although free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes ended after October 14, 2025. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11, but whether that is available depends on the PC’s compatibility. The support end date alone does not diagnose a touchscreen problem.

Should I reset Windows or buy a replacement screen?

A reset is not a first step in the general Windows troubleshooting sequence. Microsoft’s reset warning in this guidance concerns Surface, and Surface Pro X owners should not uninstall drivers because a full system reset is the only way to restore them. Back up files and confirm model-specific instructions and recovery options before a reset. A replacement screen or repair kit should wait until the exact laptop model and fault have been diagnosed; a mouse is only a temporary input workaround.

When should I contact support?

Contact the laptop manufacturer if the general restart, update, and Device Manager checks do not restore touch, or if the touchscreen entry is missing. For Surface, follow Microsoft’s Surface troubleshooting path; Microsoft recommends service when touch fails in the Surface UEFI test. Warranty, repair eligibility, and service costs depend on the device, location, and diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Windows laptop touchscreen not working?

Start with Microsoft’s general sequence: restart Windows, install available updates, and check whether a listed HID-compliant touch screen is disabled in Device Manager. If those steps do not help, use model-specific diagnostics from the laptop manufacturer.

What should I do if HID-compliant touch screen is missing?

Contact the manufacturer for instructions for your exact model. Do not install a Surface driver or another model’s driver based on a missing entry.

Should I test touchscreen function in UEFI?

Microsoft’s UEFI touch test is Surface-specific. For other laptops, follow the manufacturer’s own diagnostic instructions rather than assuming the Surface test applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Windows 10 end of support mean I need a new laptop?

No. A Windows 10 PC can still work, but Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes after October 14, 2025. Windows 11 availability depends on compatibility.

Should I reset Windows or buy a replacement screen?

Neither is a first step. Back up files and confirm model-specific reset instructions before resetting. Have the laptop model and fault diagnosed before buying a replacement screen or repair kit.

When should I contact support?

Contact the maker if restart, updates, and the Device Manager check do not restore touch, or if the touchscreen entry is missing. For Surface, Microsoft recommends service if touch fails in its UEFI test.

The Bottom Line

Restart, install available Windows updates, and check Device Manager before moving on. If the problem persists, use support instructions for your exact laptop model. UEFI testing and the detailed driver steps described here are Surface-specific; persistent faults may require manufacturer diagnosis or service.
