How to Fix Ticking Entity Crashes on a Minecraft Server

A ticking-entity crash usually points to one damaged or incompatible object saved in a Minecraft world. This guide explains how to read the report, back up safely, restore a world, remove a loaded entity, edit an unloaded chunk, and prevent the crash from returning.

A ticking-entity crash is usually caused by one damaged or incompatible entity saved in a world. Stop the server, back up the entire world, read the crash report to identify the entity and coordinates, then choose the least destructive remedy: restore a clean backup, remove the entity while its chunk is loaded, or edit/reset the affected chunk offline. Updating or removing a mod can prevent the crash from returning, but it does not erase entity data that is already saved.

What a “ticking entity” crash means

Minecraft Java Edition updates (“ticks”) entities and block entities every game cycle. If one object throws an error during that update, the server can crash repeatedly as soon as it reaches the object. The object may be a mob, item, vehicle, or another mod-added entity. A block entity is a different category: examples include a chest or furnace that stores data in the world.

Look at the exact label in the crash report. Entity being ticked identifies a mobile or ordinary entity. Block entity being ticked points to a block entity. Treat the distinction as operationally important because the cleanup tools and the mod responsible may differ.

Hosting guides describe these crashes as especially common on larger modpacks and on stacks with mismatched Minecraft, loader, mod, or sometimes Java versions. Vanilla servers can crash this way too, but the evidence available for this guide indicates that modded and mismatched installations are the usual setting.

Read the crash report before changing anything

Do not repeatedly restart a server that crashes during startup. Each attempt can write more state around the same damaged object. Stop it cleanly if possible, and make a copy of the world folder before editing or restoring files.

Find the identifying section

Open the newest file in the server’s crash-report folder and search for Entity being ticked or Block entity being ticked. Record every value in that section:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Entity or block-entity type, including a mod namespace when one is shown.
  • The unique entity ID or UUID.
  • The dimension or world name.
  • The exact X, Y, and Z coordinates.

The coordinates tell you which chunk contains the object. The type and namespace often identify the mod that created it. If the report names a block entity, do not assume a nearby mob is responsible; use the block-entity information and coordinates instead.

When there is no useful coordinate

Some reports labeled Ticking world do not provide a usable entity location. In that case, a targeted removal is not dependable because there is no verified target. A recent, known-good world backup is the safest first option. If no backup exists, offline region analysis may be necessary, but the risk of deleting the wrong data is substantially higher.

Back up the world and record the recovery point

Every removal method changes saved data. Stop the server and copy the complete world directory, including its dimension folders and server-generated metadata, to a separate location. Keep the original copy read-only if your control panel or operating system allows it. Also save the crash report and note the Minecraft version, loader, mod list, and Java runtime used for the failed start.

Use a copy for experiments. If a command removes the wrong entity or an editor damages a region file, you can discard the working copy and begin again. A backup is also required before using automated removal flags, chunk resets, or wildcard commands.

Check versions and identify the likely cause

Before deleting anything, compare the versions installed on the server with the versions expected by the world and modpack:

  • Minecraft Java Edition version.
  • Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric loader version.
  • The version of the mod named in the crash report, if any.
  • Java version and launch configuration.

A mod built for a different Minecraft or loader release can fail while its entity is being ticked. A server-side update to a compatible release is a common fix for the cause. Remove a mod only after confirming that the world can be opened safely without it and that the mod is not a required dependency. Most importantly, changing the installation does not remove an already-saved entity. Plan a cleanup or backup restore after correcting the version mismatch.

Choose a recovery method

The following comparison reflects the trade-offs described by hosting guides. “Fast” assumes you already know the target and can keep the server online long enough to perform the action.

Method Speed Residual data-loss risk Backup needed Works with an unloaded chunk Console access Mod-specific
Restore a recent clean backup Slowest Lowest Requires an existing backup Yes No No
Targeted /kill at the reported coordinates Fast Low Recommended No; the chunk must be loaded Required No
NBT or region editor, such as NBTExplorer or MCASelector Manual Higher Required Yes Offline file access instead No
Forge or NeoForge removal flag Automatic at startup Depends on the flag and mod Required Depends on the implementation No console command required Only mods that support the flag
CoFH Core wildcard removal command Fast in supported modpacks High if the wildcard matches intended mobs Required Works on unloaded chunks Required Requires CoFH Core and a modpack using it
Update or remove the offending mod Addresses the cause, not the stored damage World-dependent Recommended Does not by itself clean the chunk No command required Yes

Fix 1: restore a recent clean backup

Restoration is the most reliable remedy when a backup exists from before the crash. It avoids guessing which NBT field is damaged and works even when the offending chunk never loads successfully.

  1. Stop the server completely.
  2. Preserve the current world by renaming or copying it; do not overwrite your only evidence.
  3. Locate a backup made before the entity first appeared or before the first crash.
  4. Restore the backup to the exact world location used by the server.
  5. Verify that the server’s configured world name and dimension folders match the restored files.
  6. Start the server with the same Minecraft, loader, mod, and Java versions that created the backup.
  7. Watch the console while the affected area loads. If it starts normally, make a new backup before allowing players to return.

Restoration can discard legitimate progress made after the backup date, so tell players which interval will be lost. Once the server is stable, address the version mismatch or mod behavior that created the bad entity; otherwise the same failure can recur in newly saved data.

Fix 2: remove a loaded entity with a targeted command

Use this method only when the server remains online and the chunk containing the coordinates can load. It is appropriate for a single known entity and has a smaller blast radius than resetting an entire chunk.

  1. Work from the backup copy, or create a fresh backup immediately before the command.
  2. Confirm the dimension and coordinates from the crash report. Coordinates in another dimension will not target the object in the current world.
  3. Start the server with the suspected mod and its dependencies present, unless the mod itself prevents startup.
  4. Use the server console or an operator account to run a coordinate-limited /kill command that targets the reported entity type or unique ID. Adapt the selector syntax to your Minecraft version; do not use an unrestricted command.
  5. Check the console for a successful removal, then stop and restart the server to confirm that the crash does not return.
  6. Inspect the area in-game and make a new backup before normal play resumes.

If loading the coordinates crashes the server before the command can run, the chunk is effectively unavailable for this approach. Switch to a backup or offline editor instead of repeatedly forcing the chunk to load.

Fix 3: edit or reset the affected chunk offline

NBT and region tools can operate on an unloaded chunk, which is useful when startup fails before commands are available. NBTExplorer can expose entity data for manual removal. MCASelector can identify and reset a chunk or region. Both approaches can delete more than intended or damage the world if used on the wrong dimension or region file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the server and make two independent copies of the world.
  2. Open only the working copy in the editor. Keep the untouched copy available for rollback.
  3. Use the crash-report coordinates to identify the dimension, region, and chunk. Check the dimension carefully; the same X and Z values can exist in multiple worlds.
  4. In an NBT editor, locate the entity or block-entity record matching the reported type, UUID, and coordinates. Remove only that record and preserve unrelated entities.
  5. If you cannot isolate the record safely, use a chunk reset tool rather than guessing at individual tags, accepting that all saved structures, containers, and builds in that chunk may be lost.
  6. Save the edited copy, place it in the server’s world location, and start the server with the original version stack.
  7. Load the surrounding area, verify inventories and structures, and create a new backup.

A region editor should be the last resort when no clean backup exists. Never edit region files while the server is running; open files can be overwritten or left inconsistent.

Fix 4: use loader or library removal features carefully

Forge and NeoForge configuration flags

Some Forge and NeoForge environments provide removal flags that discard problematic entities during startup. Guides describe these as automatic but mod-dependent: they work only when the relevant mod or loader recognizes the flag. Names and locations vary by release. One guide places a Forge server configuration in the world’s serverconfig directory as forge-server.toml for Forge 1.13 and later, but that path should be verified against your exact version rather than copied blindly.

Enable a temporary removal setting only on a backup copy, start the server, confirm that the crash is gone, and then revert the setting. Leaving a broad removal option enabled can silently delete valid entities later.

CoFH Core wildcard removal

Modpacks that include CoFH Core may offer a command capable of removing entities across unloaded chunks. A wildcard can match every entity of a class, not just the damaged instance. That can erase intended mobs, machines, or mod content throughout the world. Use the narrowest target supported by the installed version, keep a backup, and treat a wildcard as a recovery operation rather than routine maintenance.

Handle a block entity separately

A Block entity being ticked report usually implicates a data-bearing block such as a chest or furnace. The coordinates identify the block position rather than a moving mob. After correcting the responsible mod, remove or replace the specific block entity through a targeted in-game action if the chunk loads, or remove its record with an offline editor. Resetting an entire chunk may also remove player builds and inventories, so reserve that option for cases where the individual record cannot be isolated.

What to do when the server still crashes

The crash returns after an update

If the same coordinates and ID appear again, the stored entity was not cleaned, or the updated mod recreated it. Restore the backup, remove the record while offline, or use a narrowly targeted command before allowing the chunk to load. Verify that every client and server mod version required by the pack is aligned.

The report names a different entity

Record the new type, ID, dimension, and coordinates. A single corrupted chunk can contain more than one failing object, and removing the first one may expose the next. Repeat the backup-first workflow for each confirmed culprit rather than deleting all entities globally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server crashes before any world loads

Use a clean backup or offline region inspection. Do not keep restarting in the hope that the chunk will repair itself; startup retries do not reverse damaged NBT data.

The world has no usable backup

Preserve the current folder before attempting recovery. An offline editor may salvage the rest of the world, but every deletion should be tested on a copy. If you reset a chunk, expect all content saved in that chunk to be removed, including legitimate player work.

Prevent another ticking-entity crash

  • Keep Minecraft, the loader, mods, and Java on versions explicitly compatible with one another.
  • Take dated world backups before changing a modpack or loading a new major version.
  • After a recovery, test the previously affected dimension and coordinates before inviting players back.
  • Keep crash reports with the corresponding backup date so you can identify when a bad entity first appeared.
  • Do not leave temporary entity-removal flags or broad wildcard commands enabled after the server is stable.
  • When adding a mod, test it on a copy of the world before deploying it to the live server.

These practices reduce the chance that a version mismatch or faulty entity will become a permanent world problem, while preserving a recovery point if one does.

The Bottom Line

Back up first, identify the exact entity or block entity in the crash report, and prefer restoring a clean world when one exists. Use a coordinate-limited removal only for a loaded chunk; use offline NBT or region editing for an unloaded one, then correct the mod or version mismatch so the damage is not recreated.
