Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The message means Windows cannot currently use this computer as a Miracast receiving display. It does not necessarily mean the PC cannot connect to Wi-Fi or the internet. Receiving requires compatible graphics hardware and drivers, a compatible Wi-Fi interface and driver, and (on supported Windows editions) the Wireless Display feature. Check those requirements in order, then use HDMI or a compatible external wireless display adapter if the hardware still cannot receive.
What the receiving-Miracast message actually means
Miracast is a wireless-display standard. One device sends its screen and another device receives it as a display. A Windows laptop or desktop can often send a screen without being able to receive one. The Projecting to this PC page tests the second role: whether this computer can act like a wireless monitor for a phone, tablet or another PC.

Receiving is separate from ordinary internet access. A desktop connected by Ethernet may browse normally and still fail this test because it lacks a suitable wireless interface, has an incompatible Wi-Fi driver, or does not have Wireless Display installed. Conversely, a computer can have Wi-Fi enabled but still lack the graphics or driver support required for Miracast.

Check the status Windows reports
Open Projecting to this PC
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then Projecting to this PC.
- Read the message under the projection settings. If Windows says the device cannot receive Miracast, continue with the feature and driver checks below.
The labels can vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the Projecting to this PC page is the relevant test. Do not rely only on the fact that the computer has a wireless network icon or an active internet connection.
Install the Wireless Display optional feature
- In Settings, open Apps, then Optional features. (On some Windows 10 builds, Optional features is under Apps & features.)
- Select View features or Add a feature.
- Search for Wireless Display, select it and choose Install.
- Return to System > Projecting to this PC. Restart Windows if the installation or the page asks you to.
Documentation for Windows 10 and 11 describes this Wireless Display installation as part of the receiving setup. If the feature is already listed as installed, do not remove it simply because the capability message remains; continue to the hardware and driver checks.

Verify Wi-Fi and graphics support from the command line
Run the Wireless Display driver check
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Enter
netsh wlan show driverand press Enter. - Find the line labeled Wireless Display Support.
The result is the quickest way to see what the installed Wi-Fi interface and driver report. A result indicating support means the wireless side is advertising the capability; a result indicating that it is not supported points to the adapter, its driver, or both. If the line is missing or the command reports an error, make sure you ran it in an elevated Command Prompt and that Windows detects a Wi-Fi adapter.

Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting guidance treats the Wi-Fi and graphics requirements together: a supported Wi-Fi interface cannot compensate for an unsupported graphics driver, and a supported graphics stack cannot compensate for an unsuitable wireless interface.

Understand a DxDiag result that seems to disagree
A DxDiag report can show Miracast: Available, with HDCP while Projecting to this PC still says receiving is unsupported. Those messages are not a guarantee that the receiving workflow is ready. The conflict can be caused by the current graphics or Wi-Fi driver, a Windows setting, or the missing Wireless Display feature. Treat Projecting to this PC and the netsh result as practical checks of the installed configuration, then work through the repairs rather than assuming DxDiag settles the question.
Update or reinstall the drivers that receiving needs
Identify the exact Wi-Fi and graphics devices
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and note the name of the Wi-Fi adapter. Ignore the Ethernet adapter when checking wireless capability.
- Expand Display adapters and note the graphics adapter.
- Record the computer or adapter manufacturer and model. This prevents installing a package for a different revision.
Use the computer manufacturer’s support page, or the adapter and graphics manufacturer’s support page when appropriate, to obtain a driver that matches your Windows edition and hardware. The Microsoft troubleshooting threads associated with this error discuss driver and interface causes, but they do not certify one universal driver package for every PC.

Install the available updates
- In Device Manager, right-click the Wi-Fi adapter and choose Update driver. Repeat for the graphics adapter.
- If Windows finds nothing, install the matching package from the manufacturer’s support page instead.
- Restart Windows after the Wi-Fi installation and again after the graphics installation if the installer requests it.
- Run
netsh wlan show driveragain and revisit Settings > System > Projecting to this PC.
Windows Update can also offer driver packages through Settings > Windows Update and, where shown, Advanced options > Optional updates. Compare the device model and driver date before installing an optional package; do not force a driver intended for another adapter.

If the problem began after a failed update, the Wi-Fi adapter is missing from Device Manager, or the command reports no wireless-display capability despite a previously supported setup, right-click the affected device, choose Uninstall device, and restart. Windows may rediscover the hardware. If it does not, install the correct package from the manufacturer’s support page using another computer and a USB drive if necessary. Keep a copy of the current driver or restore media before removing a device, especially on a desktop that has no alternate network connection.

Will a USB Wi-Fi adapter fix it?
Not automatically. A USB adapter supplies a different wireless chipset, but Miracast receiving works only when that chipset and its Windows driver expose the required wireless-display support. Many adapters are designed solely for internet networking and do not advertise this capability.
Check compatibility before buying or installing one
- Look for an explicit statement that the exact adapter model and Windows driver support Miracast or wireless display. “Supports Wi-Fi” alone is not enough.
- Confirm that the driver is available for your Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and for the adapter’s hardware revision.
- Install the manufacturer’s driver, then run
netsh wlan show driverand inspect Wireless Display Support. - Disable or disconnect the old Wi-Fi adapter temporarily while testing, so Windows uses the intended interface.
A USB adapter can therefore be a solution, but only after model-level compatibility is established. It is not a guaranteed workaround for a graphics limitation or a missing Windows feature.
Use an external wireless display adapter when native receiving is unavailable
A wireless display adapter is a legitimate hardware fallback. It connects to the receiving screen through an available video input and provides the wireless-display function externally, so the PC does not have to pass the native Projecting to this PC capability test.
Choose and connect the fallback
- Check that the adapter supports the sending device’s Miracast mode and the television or monitor’s input and resolution.
- Connect the adapter to the display as its instructions specify, usually through an HDMI input and a power connection.
- Switch the display to that input.
- On the sending Windows PC, press
Windows+Kand select the adapter, or use the sender’s documented wireless-display control.
Compatibility still matters: an adapter made for a different wireless-display protocol, a restricted office network, or an unsupported display input may not work. If you need a predictable second-screen connection and the devices have suitable ports, a direct HDMI cable is usually the simplest fallback.
Quick Recap
Use the symptoms to choose the next step
| What you see | Most likely interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Projecting to this PC says receiving is unsupported and Wireless Display is not installed | The Windows receiving component is missing. | Install Wireless Display under Optional features, restart if requested, and test again. |
netsh wlan show driver reports Wireless Display Support is not supported |
The Wi-Fi chipset or its driver does not expose the capability. | Install the correct manufacturer driver; if the result is unchanged, test a confirmed-compatible adapter or use an external wireless display adapter. |
| Wi-Fi support is present but the message remains | The graphics adapter/driver, Windows feature or current settings may be blocking receiving. | Update or reinstall both Wi-Fi and graphics drivers, verify Wireless Display is installed, restart, and retest. |
| DxDiag says “Miracast: Available, with HDCP,” but receiving is unavailable | DxDiag is reporting potential support, not a functioning receiving configuration. | Follow the Projecting to this PC, Wireless Display and driver checks rather than treating DxDiag as conclusive. |
| The PC works on Ethernet but has no usable Wi-Fi adapter | Internet connectivity is present, but the wireless interface required by native receiving is not. | Install a compatible internal or USB Wi-Fi interface, or use HDMI/external wireless-display hardware. |
Final checks before you give up on native receiving
- Confirm that the sending device is actually using Miracast, not a vendor-specific casting protocol.
- Keep the Wi-Fi and graphics adapters enabled in Device Manager while testing.
- Restart after installing Wireless Display or either driver; capability detection may not refresh until Windows reloads the components.
- Run the command again after every hardware or driver change so you are testing the current interface, not an old result.
- If native receiving remains unavailable after these checks, stop repeating driver installs and choose HDMI or a documented compatible wireless display adapter.
