What the warning means
A full-page “Your connection isn’t private” warning means the browser could not establish the expected private connection. Google Chrome Help explains that the problem may be with “the site, the network, or your device” (Google Chrome Help). It does not prove that every page on the site is malicious, but you should treat the warning as a security check: while it remains, do not submit sensitive information.

This is different from a browser’s “Not secure” indicator. Chrome says that on a site without a private connection, someone may be able to view or change information sent to and from the site. Securing that connection with HTTPS is the site owner’s responsibility (Google Chrome Help).

- Read the full message and note the code. The browser and platform affect the wording and available controls. Codes such as
NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALIDandNET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALIDpoint to certificate-name and certificate-trust problems, respectively. Do not enter personal information while the warning is displayed. - Check whether it is one site or several. If only one site triggers the warning, its certificate or configuration is a plausible cause. If unrelated sites also trigger it, device or network settings become more plausible. This comparison helps narrow the issue; it does not establish the cause by itself.
- Confirm your device’s date and time. Incorrect date or time is one possible cause of connection warnings. Correct it if needed, then reload the page; this check will not fix every certificate error (Microsoft).
- Consider the network you are using. On public or managed Wi-Fi, a sign-in page or network filtering may be involved. If you are unsure, ask the network administrator. Do not install an unfamiliar root certificate or disable security protections in response to an unsolicited prompt.
- Contact the site or service administrator if the certificate is wrong. Include the site address and exact error code. A certificate must be trusted by the browser and cover the hostname you are visiting.
- Retry after the responsible party corrects the problem. Reloading after a proper fix is different from bypassing the warning; a bypass does not repair the certificate.
What common certificate errors point to
“Authority invalid” or an untrusted certificate
The browser cannot establish trust in the certificate issuer. An untrusted or self-signed certificate can cause this kind of problem in a public service. Alibaba Cloud’s guidance for its HTTPS listener recommends using a certificate from a trusted certificate authority (Alibaba Cloud).

“Common name invalid” or a hostname mismatch
The certificate may be valid for a different address. Its Subject Alternative Name (SAN) needs to cover the domain or IP address in the URL. Palo Alto Networks documents ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID when the SAN does not match the portal’s hostname or IP (Palo Alto Networks). A certificate for one domain does not automatically cover another domain or an IP address (Alibaba Cloud).
Who can fix the problem?

For a public site, a visitor cannot repair a certificate that the operator has configured incorrectly. Certificate troubleshooting guidance from Alibaba Cloud and Palo Alto Networks likewise places the remedy with the service administrator: use a trusted certificate and ensure its SAN matches the domain or portal address (Alibaba Cloud; Palo Alto Networks).

Why bypassing the warning is not a fix
Some browsers or managed environments may expose a way to continue, but the controls differ by browser and error. Continuing does not make an untrusted or mismatched certificate trustworthy, and sensitive information may remain at risk. Alibaba Cloud explicitly describes its Chrome bypass workaround as not fixing the underlying issue and not recommended for production (Alibaba Cloud). If this is a work or development service, ask its administrator for an approved route rather than weakening browser protections yourself.
