Is the update or download failing?
First separate a stalled download from a broken installation
Note whether the download will not start, has stopped partway through, displays an error, or finished but left the game unstable. Those are different problems. CD PROJEKT RED’s PC file-verification instructions address damaged files already installed; they are not a general remedy for a download that cannot complete.

If a PC update completed but the game now crashes, shows graphics glitches, or will not launch, verify or repair the installed files using the launcher that owns the game. Choose the matching path below; the check can take several minutes:

- Steam: Library > right-click The Witcher 3 > Properties > Installed files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Epic Games Launcher: Library > three dots beside the game > Manage > Verify.
- Battle.net: Select the game > cog icon > Scan and Repair.
If the download itself will not start or resume
Check the current service status and support guidance for the platform or store you use, then save the exact error text before contacting its support team. CD PROJEKT RED’s published troubleshooting material does not establish whether PlayStation Network, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, GOG, or Epic is currently experiencing an outage, so a static troubleshooting page cannot rule one in or out.

If you cannot claim the PlayStation next-gen upgrade
For this specific eligibility issue, check that the game’s region code matches the region of your PlayStation account. CD PROJEKT RED identifies a region mismatch as a possible reason an eligible player cannot claim the free upgrade. It does not explain every failed PlayStation download.
Does The Witcher 3 crash or fail to launch after an update?
On PC, work through crash checks one at a time
After verifying the installed files using the correct launcher path above, follow CD PROJEKT RED’s PC crash guidance in sequence:
- Confirm that your PC meets the game’s system requirements.
- Close nonessential applications. The support checklist explicitly includes antivirus and antimalware applications; only disable protection temporarily if you can do so safely, and re-enable it afterward.
- Check the PC for malware.
- Verify the game files through the launcher that owns the installation.
- If the problem continues, consider a clean graphics-driver reinstall. CD PROJEKT RED points to Display Driver Uninstaller for this advanced step and notes that an older driver can sometimes help. Follow instructions from your GPU or computer manufacturer before changing drivers.
If you are considering a clean game reinstall, protect your saves first. Removing folders without a separate, confirmed backup can destroy local progress.

The official local save folder is %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. CD PROJEKT RED’s clean-install procedure calls for disabling cloud saves, uninstalling the game, removing its game folders, reinstalling without mods, restoring the saves, and optionally re-enabling cloud saves.
- Copy the entire
gamesavesfolder to a separate safe location, such as another drive or an external device. Confirm that the copy exists and contains your saves before proceeding. - Disable cloud saves for the game in the relevant launcher.
- Uninstall the game and remove its folders as directed by CD PROJEKT RED’s clean-install instructions. Do not delete the Documents save folder unless your separate backup is confirmed.
- Reinstall the game without mods, then restore the backed-up saves to the local save folder.
- Optionally turn cloud saves back on after confirming the restored saves appear as expected.
This reinstall sequence changes or removes game files, so do not treat it as a first-line fix for an update that is merely stuck.

On PlayStation
For a crash, CD PROJEKT RED’s PlayStation instructions say to fully power down the console rather than use Rest Mode, wait until the indicator lights stop, unplug it for at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and check whether the issue remains. If it does, try loading an earlier save.
The support site has a separate general cache procedure for performance problems, crashes, and black screens that specifies unplugging for at least two minutes. Do not combine the two timings: use the instructions that match your console model and the problem you are troubleshooting.
On Xbox
Fully power down the console, unplug its power cable for at least two minutes, reconnect it, and restart. CD PROJEKT RED says this clears potentially corrupted cached data without erasing games, data, or saves. If the crash persists, try loading an earlier save.
On Nintendo Switch
Check for damaged game data, then reset the system cache using the paths CD PROJEKT RED provides:
- Check for corrupt data: System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software > The Witcher 3 > Check for Corrupt Data.
- Reset cache: System Settings > System > Formatting Options > Reset Cache. The support instructions say this does not delete save data.
If the Switch freezes, hold Power for at least 12 seconds to force it off. With the console off, remove the game cartridge and/or microSD card, restart, perform a system update, and try again.

Why is a save missing or unavailable?
Check the local PC save before reinstalling
Look in %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves and confirm that you are checking the expected profile and platform. Do not immediately delete the Documents folder or overwrite cloud data. If a reinstall is necessary, make and verify a separate copy of the folder before removing game files; use the backup sequence above to restore it after reinstalling.

CD PROJEKT RED’s cross-progression instructions require the latest game patch and the same linked CD PROJEKT RED account on both platforms. Cross-progression uses cloud saves, and the instructions say it provides the latest save for each save type.
- Update the game on the platform holding the save and link it to your CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Create a save and check for the cloud icon, which indicates that the save is available through cross-progression.
- On the destination platform, sign in to the same account through My Rewards, then check Load Game.
If PlayStation says required DLC is missing
When a save reports that DLC is missing, first install the named DLC. If it is already installed, check that the account and console are activated as CD PROJEKT RED specifies: enable the Primary PS4 setting on PS4, or Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5. These are PlayStation-specific checks, not general save-recovery steps.
When to contact platform or game support
Contact the relevant platform, store, or CD PROJEKT RED support if the download remains blocked, the listed repair checks do not resolve a crash, or a backed-up save still will not load. Include your platform and launcher, the exact error text, what you had already tried, and whether the save is local or cloud-based. Menu names and support procedures can change; CD PROJEKT RED’s official guidance is the appropriate reference for the current steps for your device.
