The right steps depend on whether you use Steam, GOG Galaxy, or Epic Games Store—and whether the failure is in the game itself, REDlauncher, or a mod.
CD PROJEKT RED documents rollback controls for Steam and GOG Galaxy, but says Epic Games Store does not allow rollback to an earlier version. Its support guidance also treats the latest version as the only compatible version and recommends updating if an older version caused problems. That is general publisher guidance, not confirmation that every save made on a newer build fails on every older build. Check the official rollback article for current storefront controls; its instructions are on a Spanish-language page.

Before troubleshooting, record your storefront and version
Write down whether you installed the game through Steam, GOG Galaxy, or Epic Games Store, and note the version shown by your installation or launcher. Also note whether you use in-game mods, third-party mods, trainers, or console commands. CD PROJEKT RED’s launch support form asks for platform, game version, mod or trainer use, and a DxDiag report when escalating a launch problem.

How to revert to an earlier version of the game
Rollback is storefront-specific. The publisher documents a Classic branch or channel for Steam and GOG Galaxy. It says Epic Games Store does not permit rolling back to an earlier version.

Storefront controls and available builds can change, so verify the labels in the official rollback instructions before changing branches. The publisher’s page says the latest version is the only compatible version and recommends updating if an older version caused a problem; it does not establish that every newer-version save is incompatible with every older build.
Game is not launching
First determine whether the game executable fails to start or REDlauncher itself fails. The fixes differ. If the game opens but crashes, the official support form recommends installing the latest GPU drivers; if the issue continues, it points to a clean install and support escalation. A clean install is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.

If REDlauncher will not start
- Close the launcher and run your store platform—Steam, Epic Games, or GOG Galaxy—as administrator.
- Delete the REDlauncher folder at
%localappdata%ProgramsCD Projekt Red. - Remove any launch parameters configured for the game, then try launching again.
- If REDlauncher still fails, contact CD PROJEKT RED support.
If the game itself crashes or does not start
- Install the latest GPU drivers, then retry.
- Temporarily isolate mods using the steps below, especially if the problem began after a game update.
- If the failure persists, consider a clean install and submit a support request with your storefront, installed version, mod/trainer/console-command details, and DxDiag report through the official launch form.
I am unable to load my save after changing versions
CD PROJEKT RED’s rollback instructions do not state whether a save made on a newer version will load after switching to an older build, and they do not provide a downgrade-specific backup procedure. Do not assume either that a save will work or that it cannot work across versions.
As general file-safety advice—not an official compatibility instruction—make a copy of your save folder before changing branches or reinstalling. On Windows, the support form gives the save location as %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. Each save consists of a .sav file and a same-name .png image. If you report a gameplay issue, CD PROJEKT RED asks you to compress and attach the relevant pair of files.
The support index has separate articles about cross-progression and loading cross-progression saves. Those address cross-progression, not confirmed compatibility between different PC game versions. For a version-change problem, provide your storefront, the versions involved, and the affected save pair when contacting official support.

Reporting issues with in-game mods
Mods can cause crashes, prevent launch, or produce other unexpected behavior, including after a game update. First identify whether the mod came from the in-game Mods menu or was installed separately as a third-party PC mod.
For mods installed through the in-game menu
- Disable or unsubscribe from the in-game mod, then check whether the same problem remains.
- If the issue disappears, report it to the mod creator through that mod’s page.
- If the issue remains, remember that disabling a mod does not necessarily remove consequences already stored in a save. The publisher says an earlier save from before mod use may be needed.
CD PROJEKT RED advises: “We advise against installing mods that alter quest structure mid-playthrough.” For mod-content reports, use the mod page’s Report button or mod.io/report. For a suspected issue with the game itself, use the official support site.
For third-party PC mods installed outside the in-game menu
CD PROJEKT RED’s instruction is to perform a clean install. Removing an individual mod is not evidence that changes it already wrote into a save have been reversed.
