The red “Update Apple ID Settings” alert usually means an Apple Account service needs you to authenticate again. It does not necessarily mean you must change your personal details. Open the alert, choose Continue, enter the account password, provide the six-digit verification code if requested, and approve with your device passcode or Mac login password. Complete any payment or security request that follows.
Apple renamed Apple ID to Apple Account; older software may still use the former name. The account, email address or phone number, password, and services are the same. See Apple’s terminology and sign-in guidance at Apple Account support.
Try the normal fix first
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap the red Update Apple ID Settings banner beneath your name.
- Tap Continue.
- Enter the password for the Apple Account shown.
- Enter the six-digit code sent to a trusted device or phone number.
- Enter your iPhone or iPad passcode if asked.
- Finish any remaining account, security, or payment request.
Reopen Settings and check that the red alert is gone. If you do not see the banner, inspect Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security, Payment & Shipping, iCloud, and Media & Purchases. Menu names can vary by iOS or iPadOS release and region. Apple’s current guide is available at iPhone Apple Account settings.
Mac
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click your name at the top of the sidebar and complete the notification or sign-in request.
- Enter your Apple Account password, a two-factor code, and your Mac login password if requested.
If the Mac is not signed in, choose System Settings > Sign in. If the notice remains, check Sign-In & Security, Payment & Shipping, iCloud, and Media & Purchases. See Apple’s Mac account guide.

Why the prompt keeps returning
A password change, iCloud-backup restore, replacement-device setup, or software update can leave one or more services waiting for fresh authentication. The affected service may be iCloud, iCloud Keychain, Messages, FaceTime, Find My, Family Sharing, subscriptions, or App Store and media purchases. A separate Media & Purchases account, an unpaid balance, a network problem, or an Apple service outage can produce the same-looking alert. Apple documents repeated sign-in prompts and connection checks at its iCloud troubleshooting page.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
If the alert does not clear
- Check the account name. Make sure the email address or phone number in the prompt is your current account.
- Stop guessing passwords. Repeated failures can lock the account. If you recently changed the password, use the new one everywhere.
- Verify two-factor authentication. Check trusted Apple devices and the trusted phone number. Use the option to resend the code or receive an automated call when offered.
- Test the connection. Use reliable Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot. Avoid hotel, airport, and other captive-portal networks while signing in; ensure cellular or mobile data is permitted for the service.
- Check Apple’s service status. Visit Apple System Status. If Apple Account, iCloud, App Store, Find My, or media services are down, wait rather than repeatedly signing out or resetting the device.
- Restart normally. A restart is low risk when Settings is responsive. Use a model-specific force-restart procedure only if the device is frozen.
- Install available updates. On iPhone or iPad use Settings > General > Software Update; on Mac use Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. Apple recommends current compatible software for iCloud connection problems.
- Inspect billing and Media & Purchases. These can require separate authentication even when iCloud appears signed in.
Password, verification, and account problems
Password rejected or forgotten
Confirm the account shown before trying again. If you forgot the password, reset it on a trusted device: Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Change Password on iPhone or iPad, or Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Change Password on Mac. Apple may impose a security delay of up to one hour for critical changes, including in some Stolen Device Protection situations. Details are at Apple’s password-reset guidance. Without a trusted device, use Apple’s account-recovery process rather than repeatedly submitting guesses.
An old Apple Account password appears
Note the address shown and check Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases. Apps or media bought under an older account must be updated with that purchasing account; deleting them can mean downloading them again. If the address belongs to a previous owner, that person must remove the device from their account. Do not attempt to bypass Activation Lock.

The verification code never arrives
- Confirm that the trusted phone number still works.
- Look on every trusted Apple device for the code.
- Use resend or phone-call delivery if available.
- Check internet access and set date and time automatically.
- If all trusted methods are unavailable, start account recovery at Apple’s account-recovery guidance.
The account is locked or disabled
Follow the exact route in the alert. A security lock generally requires a password reset; a “locked and cannot be used” message may offer an access request; a disabled Media & Purchases account has a separate reactivation process. Apple’s distinctions and recovery steps are at Apple’s locked-account guidance.

Check payment and billing information
An expired card, declined transaction, incorrect billing address, unpaid balance, active subscription, or Family Sharing purchase arrangement can keep the prompt active. A payment method is not universally required, but the service may require one for the account’s subscriptions or balance.

Sign out and back in only as a prepared last step
Signing out can clear a stale local authentication state, but it is disruptive. Before doing it, make a current backup, let iCloud finish syncing, confirm the current password and trusted-code access, and understand that iCloud data may be removed from the device temporarily and downloaded again after sign-in. Do not sign out if you do not know the password, cannot complete two-factor authentication, or are facing Activation Lock.

Activation Lock or a replacement device
Restoring or erasing a device does not bypass Activation Lock. The previous owner or account owner must remove the device from Find My. A restore can also leave authentication incomplete, so finish sign-in before assuming the hardware is faulty.
Protect your account while troubleshooting
- Enter credentials only in Settings, System Settings, Apple’s official account pages, or the Apple Support app.
- Never share a six-digit verification code with another person, including someone who calls unexpectedly.
- Do not use third-party “Apple ID unlock” services or tools.
- Do not erase the device unless you have a verified backup and have resolved account and Activation Lock issues.
When to contact Apple
Use Apple’s Apple Account support hub when the account is locked or disabled, the password works online but not on the device, trusted verification methods are unavailable, an old account cannot be identified, the device is organization-managed, iCloud data is missing or still syncing, Activation Lock is involved, or the prompt continues after authentication, network, status, billing, update, and restart checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ignore the “Update Apple ID Settings” alert?
Ignoring it can leave services such as iCloud, Messages, Find My, subscriptions, or Media & Purchases unavailable or out of sync. Authenticate through Settings or System Settings when possible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does erasing an iPhone remove this prompt?
Not reliably. Erasing can cause data loss and does not remove Activation Lock, fix an unpaid balance, or change the account that purchased an app.
Is the alert a scam?
The built-in alert is a normal Apple reauthentication request. Treat unsolicited links, calls, or messages asking for your password or verification code as suspicious.
