Stop repeated login attempts, disable VPN or proxy routing, clean the ChatGPT browser session, wait up to one hour when the message specifically says “We have detected suspicious login behavior,” then make one login attempt from a trusted device and network. If the warning persists or you see unknown account activity, secure the account and contact OpenAI Support.
Identify the exact message first
Take a screenshot and record the wording before changing anything. Similar-looking messages can require different remedies.

The fastest safe fix
- Stop trying to sign in. Cycling through passwords, devices and VPN servers can retrigger a temporary restriction.
- Wait when appropriate. For the exact “We have detected suspicious login behavior” message, OpenAI advises waiting up to one hour before trying again. This is not a guaranteed recovery time for every warning.
- Use one ordinary connection. Disable VPNs, proxies, iCloud Private Relay, secure-DNS filters and similar traffic-routing tools. If you are on school, corporate, hotel or public Wi-Fi, test mobile data or a trusted home network.
- Clean the login session. Clear site-specific data for
chatgpt.com,openai.comandauth.openai.com, then open a private/incognito window. - Temporarily disable interference. Turn off ad blockers, script blockers, privacy extensions, cookie managers and URL blockers. Allow cookies and JavaScript for the three domains above.
- Use the original sign-in method. Choose the same route used when the account was created: email and password, Google, Microsoft or Apple. Apple’s Hide My Email can associate the account with an
@privaterelay.appleid.comaddress. - Make one clean attempt. Use one trusted device and network. If it fails, stop retrying and move to account-security checks or Support.
Why VPNs, networks and privacy tools matter
OpenAI lists unexpected locations or devices, rapid activity changes, multiple concurrent sessions, VPNs and proxies, browser interference and account sharing as possible contributors to suspicious-activity alerts. A VPN does not automatically cause a warning, but shared or frequently changing exit IP addresses can make a login look unusual.
Test the network without trying to evade a restriction
- Disconnect the VPN or proxy rather than switching through many countries or servers.
- Turn off Private Relay and comparable routing features temporarily.
- Compare one normal home connection with one mobile-data connection.
- Do not use a location change to bypass a regional restriction, suspension or other security control.
A managed network can also interfere with Cloudflare verification. If verification loops only at work or school, an administrator may need to allow the relevant Cloudflare challenge traffic. A network change is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.

Make a targeted browser reset
Clear cookies and cache for the ChatGPT and OpenAI domains rather than deleting every browser cookie. A full cookie wipe can sign you out of unrelated sites. Then retry in a private window or a clean browser profile with extensions disabled. Clearing local data can repair a stale login state; it cannot remove a server-side restriction.
Check authentication and verification problems
Using a different sign-in route can open a separate account or produce an authentication error that feels like a block. If you are unsure which method you used, try each available method once in a private window rather than repeatedly creating accounts.

Delayed or expired verification codes
- Request a new code and enter the most recent one only.
- Check spam, quarantine and filtering folders.
- Confirm the message is being sent to the registered address.
- Do not repeatedly submit old or expired codes.

Decide whether the account may be compromised
The warning alone is not evidence of a hack. It becomes a security incident when you see activity you did not initiate, such as unfamiliar login alerts, unknown conversations or settings, password-reset emails you did not request, unexpected subscription charges or API usage, or access from an unfamiliar device or location.

- Change the ChatGPT password immediately. OpenAI says this logs out current sessions within 30 minutes.
- If you use Google or Microsoft sign-in, change the password for that provider instead of looking for a separate ChatGPT password.
- Enable MFA or 2FA where it is offered for your account.
- Review conversations, subscription details and API activity for anything unfamiliar.
- Stop account sharing. Multiple people, devices or distant locations can resemble risky concurrent activity; use separate accounts instead.
For recognized unauthorized activity, follow OpenAI’s account-security instructions. Never send a password, one-time code or API key to someone claiming to provide recovery help.
When CAPTCHAs keep appearing
Occasional CAPTCHAs are normal anti-bot checks. Constant challenges can be associated with VPN or proxy traffic, unusual request patterns or a browser that blocks required scripts and cookies.

- Wait rather than submitting the challenge repeatedly.
- Retry in an incognito window with extensions disabled.
- Use one stable, ordinary connection.
- If a CAPTCHA appears on every message, capture a screenshot and include it in your Support request. OpenAI’s guidance is at https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8184038.
If ChatGPT says “Sorry, you have been blocked”
This can be an IP-level Cloudflare block influenced by the apparent risk or geography of the originating address. It is not automatically the same as an account suspension. Disable VPN or proxy services, try one legitimate alternate network and wait for a temporary block to clear. Do not keep changing IP addresses or create accounts to get around the block.
If the account is suspended or deactivated
A deactivated account is a different case from a broken cookie, CAPTCHA or VPN connection. OpenAI says deactivation can relate to Usage Policy violations, Terms of Service breaches, inappropriate account sharing, security concerns or repeated violations. Follow the appeal instructions in the notification email. Repeated login attempts, cache clearing or network switching will not reverse an enforcement decision. Check for an OpenAI service incident
Before treating a widespread failure as an account problem, check OpenAI’s status page. An active incident can affect multiple devices and networks at once.
Contact OpenAI Support with usable evidence
Escalate after waiting, removing VPN or proxy tools, clearing site data, testing a private window, and trying another trusted device and network—or immediately if you see unauthorized activity, cannot access the registered email, or have unrecognized charges or API usage.
Include:
- The account email address
- The exact error text and a screenshot
- Date and time, including your time zone
- Device, operating system, browser and browser version
- Whether VPN, proxy, Private Relay, secure DNS or extensions were active
- Whether you were on home, mobile, corporate, school, hotel or public Wi-Fi
- Any request, ray or device ID shown by the error
- Whether the problem occurs on another clean device or network
Do not include passwords, authentication codes, API keys or full payment-card details unless an official OpenAI process specifically requests appropriate verification information. The suspicious-activity guidance is at https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10471992.
